UN chief appalled by bombings in Russia

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon is appalled by the twin bombings that struck Russia’s Volgograd city, which left dozens of people dead, a UN spokesperson said Monday.

At least 10 people were killed and 10 more injured early Monday when a bomb went off in a trolleybus in Volgograd. The attack came a day after a woman suicide bomber blew herself up at a railway station in the city, killing 17 people and injuring 45.

Don’t want Devyani issue to negatively impact relationship: US

The United States does not want the arrest of senior Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade to negatively impact its important bilateral relationship with the country, a top US administration official has said.

“We don’t want this to negatively impact our relationship, that we work on a broad range of issues together, our bilateral relationship is too important. And we’ve said repeatedly that we don’t want it,” the State Department Deputy Spokesperson, Marie Harf, told reporters at her daily news conference yesterday.

People block Rohtak Road Bypass for 3 hrs over missing women

Upset by police’s failure to trace two women missing for almost two months from Ashram Basti in the city, residents of the area today blocked the Rohtak Road Bypass for nearly three hours, causing a huge traffic jam.

Accusing the police of inaction in the case, the protesters demanded that the women be traced soon.

On hearing about the blockade, SHO of the city police station Captan Singh along with police force reached the spot and tried to pacify the crowd, but the people did not listen and the traffic remained disrupted for nearly three hours.

NCRPB clears Rs 654cr for building of roads in 5 Haryana dists

The National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) today sanctioned about Rs 654 crore for the construction of roads of a total length of 114.302km in the five Haryana districts of Gurgaon, Jhajjar, Rohtak, Rewari and Sonipat.

A Haryana government spokesman said that improvement of existing roads and the building of new roads and bypasses would be undertaken with the money.

NCRPB’s project sanctioning and monitoring group cleared the funds today at a meeting held under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, Sudhir Krishna.

222 bottles of liquor seized, 3 bootleggers arrested

Cracking down on bootlegging in view of New Year festivities, police seized 222 bottles of liquor here and arrested three persons allegedly involved in the smuggling of alcohol.

Raj Kumar, an alleged bootlegger, was arrested in sector 20 and 30 bottles of country-made liquor were recovered at his behest, police said.

As many as 192 bottles of liquor were seized in sector 58 and two persons, identified as Deepak and Gaurav, arrested in this connection, they said.

The liquor bottles were hidden in a Tata Safari which was impounded, police said.

JC to leave Congress if State divided or not

Anantapur Congress leader and MLA J C Diwakar Reddy today made another sensational comment saying that he would not be in the Congress whether the State was bifurcated or not.

Talking to the media at Anantapur, JC declared that he would not continue in the Congress party whether Andhra Pradesh was divided or not and he will announce his future course of action after January 31. US condemns terrorist attack in Russia

US today condemned a terrorist attack in southern Russia that left at least 14 people dead.

“The United States condemns the terrorist attacks that struck the Russian city of Volgograd and sends deepest condolences to the families of the victims with hopes for the rapid healing of those wounded,” said Caitlin Hayden, spokesperson of the National Security Council, White House.

The US stands in solidarity with the Russian people against terrorism, she said in a statement.

US to proceed with proseuction of Khobragade

The US is proceeding with the prosecution of senior Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade and has no intention to withdraw the case of visa fraud against her.

US sources here said today that more evidence was being gathered against the 39-year-old diplomat before the indictment is filed. The deadline for indictment is January 13.

There is no question of apology to India over the arrest of Khobragade, the then Deputy Consul General of India, in New York on December 12 which has led to strong protests by the Indian government and widepread indignation in India.

Lebanon army fires on Syria aircraft for ‘first time’

The Lebanese army used its air defence systems against Syrian helicopters after they carried out a raid inside Lebanese territory, a military source told AFP.

It was the first time the Lebanese army has responded to Syrian attacks on its territory, which have multiplied as the conflict in its eastern neighbour has intensified, the source said yesterday.

“In accordance with the orders of the army command, anti-aircraft guns were fired in the direction of Syrian helicopters that bombed Khirbet Dawud near Arsal,” in the area near the Syrian border, the source told AFP.

Putin to keep within the law in terror hunt: UN

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to stay within international law in the hunt for the perpetrators of two bomb attacks in the city of Volgograd, the United Nations said.

Putin made the promise in talks with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon following the suicide blasts earlier yesterday and Sunday that left at least 31 people dead.

Putin “noted that the international community must work together in the fight against terrorism and commended the United Nations for its important role in coordinating efforts to fight organised crime and terrorism,” said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky.

PM condemns terror attack in Russia as “ghastly”, writes to Putin

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday strongly condemned the “ghastly” terrorist attacks in the southern Russian city of Volgograd and conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin condolences for the victims.

In a letter to Putin, Singh termed the attacks as “unconscionable” crime against humanity and said he was “outraged and pained” to know about them.

Violence not acceptable in Bangladesh: US

The US has said that violence is not acceptable in Bangladesh ahead of the next week’s general elections which is facing a threat from the main opposition parties.

Kolkata soon to get museum like Madam Tussauds: Mamata

Kolkata will soon have a wax museum of its own on lines of the world famous Madame Tussauds, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here Monday.

The wax museum would come up opposite Prakriti Tirtha – the Eco-Tourism Park at Rajarhat in the city’s north eastern outskirts – which was opened to the visitors January this year.

“Inspired by the Madame Tussauds, the world famous exponent of Wax Museum of London, we are creating our museum to allow photo opportunity to the visitors with famous personalities,” said Banerjee.

Police defuse bombs found near Musharraf’s house

Pakistani police today defused four small bombs found near former Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf’s farmhouse here, nearly a week after explosives were discovered on the road he was to take to a court.

According to the police, the improvised devices containing explosives in packets were found in a forested area on Park Road near Musharraf’s villa at Chak Shahzad.

Each packet contained around 400 to 500 grams of explosives and there were two detonators, police officials said. A passerby spotted the devices a short distance from the farmhouse.

The second working day of the Aam Aadmi Party government at the Delhi Secretariat was virtually lost to chaos with the media boycotting a press conference following an initial decision to ban reporters inside the premises, which was, however, later on lifted in the evening.

Apollo Tyres to take legal recourse after Cooper Tire ends $ 2.5 bn deal

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co today terminated its troubled $2.5-billion merger agreement with Apollo Tyres, which said it will take legal action against the US-based firm.

“It is time to move our business forward. While the strategic rationale for a business combination with Apollo is compelling, it is clear the merger agreement both companies signed on June 12 will not be consummated by Apollo,” Cooper Chairman CEO and President Roy Armes said in a statement.
