Jacques Kallis, one of the greatest all-rounders of the game, today bid adieu to Test cricket after an illustrious 18-year career in a fairytale script as he hit a century in his swansong match in South Africa’s 10-wicket thrashing of India here today.

The script for Kallis’ Test retirement could not have been better as he ended his career as the third highest run- getter in the longest format of the game, besides also bowing out with a win by his side.

Chairman of Maharishi Vidya Mandir School Group and Chancellor of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University, Girish Chandra Verma was held for allegedly sexually exploiting a former woman employee for several years, sources said.

Verma was arrested on the complaint filed by the victim about nine months back. While he was being arrested his security guards offered stiff resistance against police action. Verma was picked up from his ashram on the Bhojpur road and remanded to the Jehangirabad police station for interrogation.

Ex-South Sudanese vice president urged to accept ceasefire

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said Monday that leaders would join hands against forces allied to South Sudanese ex-vice president Riek Machar , if he failed to respond to a ceasefire agreement offered to him.

The inter-governmental authority for development, a regional body, would “defeat Machar” to avert further escalation of violence in the new nation, Xinhua report citing local media.

“We gave him (Machar) four days and if he does not (comply with the agreement), then we shall have to go for him. That is what we agreed on,” Museveni said in the South Sudanese capital of Juba.

Speeding BMW injures five in Mumbai

Five people were injured by a speeding BMW car in Mumbai on late Monday night.

The incident took place when the BMW car was driving at high speed and injured five labourers who were working on the road.

The driver has been arrested and sent for medical examination.

Pak govt, army on same page for tackling terrorists: Sharif

Making it clear that attacks on army and public will not be tolerated, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said the government and the military were on the same page on the issue of tackling terrorists in Karachi or the restive tribal areas.

The remarks came in the backdrop of a recent limited operation launched by the army in North Waziristan.

“We will adopt coordinated strategy to root out the menace of terrorism,” Sharif said while chairing a meeting in the Prime Minister’s House to review anti-terror laws.

Narayan Sai takes voice spectrography test

Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai was Monday subjected to a voice-matching test in connection with a case in which he is accused of hatching a plan to bribe cops and judicial officers so as to weaken the rape case lodged against him by a Surat-based woman.

The test was conducted at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Gandhinagar.

“Narayan Sai was taken to the FSL where he willingly underwent voice spectrography test,” said DCP (Crime), Surat, Shobha Bhutada.

5.4-magnitude quake jolts eastern Japan

A shallow 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Japan today, rocking buildings in Tokyo but there were no reports of any damage, seismologists said.

The quake hit at 10:03 am (0633 IST) in Ibaraki prefecture, 160 kilometres northeast of Tokyo, and some 80 kilometres southwest of the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, according to Japan Meteorological Agency.

The tremor was 10 kilometres deep, the agency said, and was followed eight minutes later by a very shallow 3.6-magnitude quake in the same area. The initial quake was strong enough to gently rock high-rise buildings in the capital.

Israel releases 26 Palestinian prisoners: Palestinian official

Israel released 26 Palestinian prisoners early today, a Palestinian official told AFP, in accordance with commitments made to revive US-brokered peace talks.

“Two vans carrying (18) prisoners left Ofer prison and were headed to Ramallah” in the West Bank, the official said, adding that three other prisoners were being released to the Gaza Strip and five others to east Jerusalem.

Today’s release was the third stage of the freeing of 104 inmates that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu committed to let go in four stages, when the peace talks were renewed in July.

Syria’s Assad urges fight against Saudi religious ideology

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad today called for a battle against Wahhabism, the political and religious ideology embraced by the Saudi government, a key backer of the uprising against his regime.

The comments came amid ongoing tensions between the two countries, which are fiercely opposed to each other.

“President Assad said that extremist and Wahhabi thought distort the real Islam, which is tolerant,” state news agency SANA said.

Quality missing in techical education: Pallam Raju

Union HRD Minister Pallam Raju today said the quality of technical education in the country should be improved and graduates should be given skill training to equip them meet requirements of industry.

Schumacher ‘fighting for life’: doctors

Seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher is “fighting for his life” after a ski accident in the French Alps, BBC reported early Tuesday.

The driver remains in a critical condition in hospital in Grenoble hospital in France with head injuries suffered Sunday morning at the resort of Meribel. “We cannot tell you what the outcome will be yet,” the doctors treating him told a news conference Monday morning.

Schumacher’s family were at his bedside. He underwent surgery on arrival at the University Hospital in Grenoble.
