Pakistan sharia court appoints first female judge in 33 years

Pakistan’s sharia court has reportedly appointed a female judge to hear proceedings under the country’s Islamic legislation for the first time in its 33-year history.

Ashraf Jehan , who was serving as an additional judge at the high court in Sindh, made history as she took the oath in Karachi.

Chief justice of the Federal Shariat Court of Pakistan, Agha Rafiq said that it was a historic oath-taking ceremony when an able lady judge had joined the Shariat Court, Dawn reports.

President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are the most admired man and woman in America, a new poll has found.

According to Gallup Poll, nearly 16 percent of Americans said they most admired Obama.

The poll found that Clinton led among women with 15 percent of Americans liking her.

Obama and Clinton top the Gallup poll for the sixth consecutive year.

According to Politico, Obama is a dozen points ahead of the next contenders, former President George W. Bush and Pope Francis, who each got 4 percent.

Prince William to study agriculture at Cambridge

Prince William will be heading back to school for a ten-week course on agricultural management in January 2014.

According to Kensington Palace, the Duke of Cambridge’s course, which is part of the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership at the University of Cambridge, will end in mid-March, the New York Post reported.

The royal family added that the course seeks to provide William, 31, with an understanding of contemporary issues affecting agricultural business and rural communities in the UK. (ANI)

Afghan war most unpopular in U.S. history

The war in Afghanistan is the least popular war in American history, according to a new poll.

The CNN/ORC International Poll found that 82 percent oppose the conflict, as compared to 17 percent who support it.

One-third of Americans said they believed the U.S. was winning the war in Afghanistan, while 57 percent thought it was going badly, Politico reports.

A slim majority also believe that troops should leave the country before December 2014, the current deadline. (ANI)

Rains in Delhi intensify cold wave

Cold wave conditions have been further intensified in the national capital as light rain lashed most part of the city last night.

According to the Met. Department, the city has received 6.4 degree milimetres rainfall till 5.30 a.m.

The minimum temperature was recorded 11.6 Celsius and the maximum settled at 19.7 degree Cselsius.

The weatherman has predicted for partly cloudy sky with light rain in some parts of the city during next 24 hours. (ANI)

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been advised two-day bed rest, a doctor treating him said today.

” Arvind Kejriwal is better now but has weakness, had 100 fever last night, complete bedrest for next 2-3days, will be on antibiotics,” Dr. Vipin Mittal , who is treating the newly elected Chief Minister, said.

“Kejriwal wanted to attend office for two hours today, but I advised him not to do this. Kejriwal’s blood pressure is now normal and he is recovering well,” Dr. Mittal added.

Kirti Azad for early removal of Justice Ganguly from WBHRC

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirti Azad on Tuesday said that former Supreme Court Justice A.K Ganguly should have been removed from the West Bengal Human Rights Commission immediately after he was accused of molesting a law intern.

“They should have taken this step long time ago. Immediate steps should have been taken when Ganguly was not willing to step down from his position,” said Azad.

“The delay puts a question on why did they take so long. A girl has been molested which makes it a very serious issue. There was no reason to delay it till so long,” he said.

Apple hires NYT Magazine design chief Arem Duplessis as creative director

Apple has reportedly hired the design director of The New York Times Magazine to head the tech giant’s creative department.

Arem Duplessis, who had been behind the magazine’s covers for almost a decade, is set to join Apple as a creative director .

According to Cnet, Duplessis would join the ranks of several other prominent media types, including Katie Couric and David Pogue who both joined Yahoo, to recently head to the tech industry.

Although Duplessis’ exact nature of role isn’t clear yet, but he is expected to join the company’s internal marketing team. (ANI)

Younger women still consider motherhood priority: Study

Younger women, who lead more varied and exciting lives than their moms, still consider having a baby a priority, according to a study.

The study of 1,000 women in the age group of 25 to 40 found that the largest proportion (68 per cent) said having a baby was their greatest priority in lives, the Daily Express reported.

The research by skin care firm Olay Total Effects also found that this was followed by getting married (54 per cent) and buying a house (51 per cent).

Dolphins ‘purposely get high on puffer fish toxins’

A new documentary has revealed that dolphins, like humans, also deliberately ‘gets high’.

The BBC’s ‘ Dolphins: Spy in the Pod’ used cameras strapped to submersibles and surprisingly found that a group of young dolphins were getting high’ on a puffer fish’s toxins, Metro.co.uk reported.

The toxin, in large doses, is capable of killing, but in small doses it acts as a narcotic.

Zoologist Rob Pilley, who worked on the series, told the Sunday Times that young dolphins were deliberately experimenting with something they know to be intoxicating.

Manish Tewari denies reports on PM resigning

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari Tuesday denied reports of that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would announce at a press conference scheduled for Friday that he was resigning.

Television channels, quoting sources, said the prime minister is likely to resign in the press conference, paving way for Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

“This report is completely baseless, based on conjecture and insinuation. I don’t even think it should be dignified with a response,” said Tewari responding to a question on Manmohan Singh’s resignation.

A women from Chicago, US, has claimed to have one the world’s biggest butts which are 2.1 metres wide.

Bootylicious Sarah Massey said that she had turned her life around by regaining her confidence after posting pictures of her bottom online and getting plenty of positive feedback from ‘fans’, News.com.au reported.

The 33-year-old, who doesn’t hold any official record, wears size 10XL trousers and believes her bottom is the biggest in the world.

Four killed in Yemen suicide bombing

A powerful car bomb ripped through the security headquarters in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden early Tuesday, killing at least four soldiers and injuring two others, a government official said.

“The assault came after a suicide bomber struck the security headquarters in Aden’s neighbourhood of Khor Maksar district with an explosives-laden car at the main gate of the building,” the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity, adding that it was a suicide car bombing.

100 years of commercial aviation

Percival Fansler, an engineer, organised the funding for the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line which provided the first scheduled air service across Tampa Bay in Florida (US).

Automotive businessman Thomas Benoist’s airboat conducted the first flight, piloted by Tony Jannus, while Abram Pheil, then mayor of St. Petersburg, paid USD 400 at an auction for the 23-minute flight on January one, 1914.

PM will complete his tenure: PMO junks media speculation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has no intention of stepping down ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, his office said today, rejecting the speculation in this regard.

The speculation was triggered by the Prime Minister’s decision to hold a rare press conference here on January three, which will only be the third of his current tenure.

“The Prime Minister will complete his tenure,” the PMO said, rubbishing a report of his stepping down before the polls.

A media report had speculated that Singh may step down ahead of the Lok Sabha polls to make way for Rahul Gandhi.
