Naidu inspects YSR kin building demolition work

TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu here on Tuesday visited the ongoing building demolition work taken up by the GHMC on the direction of the High Court. The controversial building was illegally constructed by Ravidranath Reddy, former Kadapa Mayor and brother-in-law of late chief minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Redy, on Road No. 2 in the posh Jubilee Hills area.

Satellite study to link lift and drift irrigation: Minister

Minor Irrigation Minister TG Venkatesh today said the government was intending to link up Lift Irrigation and Drift Irrigation Projects in the State.

Addressing the media at Secretariat, Venkatesh said a Satellite study was going on and the government would take steps after submission of its report. If the project becomes operational, another four lakh acres will get irrigation waters, taking the total to 14 lakh acres, he maintained. The Centre would provide financial assistance to the project and it is for the state government to make optimum use of the funds for this crucial project.

Foetal alcohol syndrome heart defects may be caused by altered function and not structure

Collection of birth defects known as foetal alcohol syndrome can cause heart problems in the baby which may be due to altered function and not structure, a new study has revealed.

Along with growth retardation, head and face abnormalities, and neurological problems, FAS also causes heart problems in just over half of those with this condition.

To investigate the cause of these alcohol-induced heart defects, Ganga Karunamuni of Case Western University and her colleagues studied heart formation in quail embryos, whose heart development is very similar to that of humans.

Kamal Faruqui calls Gadkari’s claims about AAP and Congress deal an election stunt

Samajwadi Party leader Kamal Faruqui on Tuesday said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitin Gadkari’s ‘disclosure’ of a deal between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress was just an election stunt.

“This whole issue of Gadkari making such claims seems to be an election stunt,” said Faruqui.

“Why aren’t they naming the people who were a part of the deal or the industrialist? Mr. Gadkari will do a good job if they bring the evidence to the media,” he said.

US population growth rate slowest in decades

An expert has revealed that America’s population is growing at its slowest rate in decades, blaming it on its sluggish economy.

The US population grew by just 0.72 percent in the year ended July 1, 2013, according to the Census Bureau. That’s the slowest growth rate since 1937, the Huffington Post reported.

Population growth has hovered at super-low levels for the past few years, according to William Frey, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, a nonpartisan research organization.

The trend is “troubling,” Frey said, and is due largely to the weak economy .

Protests outside Rahul Gandhi’s residence

Around 300 protestors from the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were detained by Delhi Police Tuesday while demonstrating outside Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s residence here, a police official said.

The protestors were demanding action against Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, whom the BJP has been accused of indulging in corruption.

The protest continued for almost two hours and Delhi Police had to use water canons to disperse the protestors.

The poll of 2,000 women found many hate the thought of their other half knowing they pluck, wax and shave.

Hair removal from toes, chin, body and bikini line remain deeply hidden secrets, the survey found.

Removing hard skin from feet and keeping a hairless upper lip are also kept private, ‘the Daily Express’ reported.

Yuvraj dropped; Ishwar, Binny get nod for New Zealand tour

All-rounder Yuvraj Singh was today axed from India’s ODI squad owing to his poor performance in South Africa even as rookies such as Ishwar Pandey and Stuart Binny got their maiden call-ups for India’s tour of New Zealand starting with a one-day series from January 19.

Yuvraj, who got out to a second-ball duck the only time he came out to bat in the lost three-match ODI series against South Africa, was replaced by Stuart Binny, son of former India all-rounder Roger Binny.

No possibility of Cong doing well under Rahul: BJP

Amid reports that Rahul Gandhi may be anointed the Congress Prime Ministerial candidate, BJP today said the recent Assembly polls results have shown the party has “failed” under his leadership and has no possibility of doing well in the Lok Sabha polls.

Ramesh attacks Modi govt on water conservation programme

Narendra Modi’s government today came under attack from Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh for not spending funds provided by the Centre for implementing an ambitious programme to conserve water in drought-hit areas of Gujarat.

In a letter to Modi, Ramesh said that under the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), the Centre has, so far, released Rs 702 crore and the unspent balance available with the state was about Rs 409 crore.

Kallis retires in 12th position

Jacques Kallis retired in 12th position in the ICC rankings for Test batsmen after he inspired South Africa to a 10-wicket victory over India in the second and final Test in Durban Monday.

Kallis scored a fine 115, his 45th century, which helped South Africa secure a decisive 166-run first innings lead. During his innings, Kallis also became the third highest run scorer in the history of the game after Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) and Ricky Ponting (13,378), finishing with 13,289 runs — ahead of Rahul Dravid (13,288).

Metro museum celebrates fifth anniversary

The Delhi Metro museum Tuesday celebrated its fifth anniversary. A touch screen information system was unveiled on the occasion.

Set up at the Patel Chowk Metro station, the touch screen information system comprises of a touch screen kiosk along with a 65 inch high definition monitor, where visitors will be able to watch informational films on various aspects related to the Metro.

“The idea behind this museum is to exhibit our work. We wanted to give out information and share new developments,” said Anuj Dayal, DMRC executive director for corporate communications.

Dubai airport may surpass passenger traffic forecast

Dubai International, the world’s second busiest international airport hub, is set to surpass the traffic forecast for this year as the airport recorded another month of high growth in November.

With passenger traffic in November reaching 5,337,544, up 9.5 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2012, the airport has registered 12 consecutive months with traffic exceeding 5 million passengers, according to the monthly traffic report issued Monday by Dubai Airports.

AAP considering names of its legislators for Speaker’s post

With BJP and Congress not coming forward with the name of a candidate for the post of Delhi Assembly Speaker, the Aam Aadmi Party is considering the names of its legislators for the post.

The Delhi Assembly Session is starting from tomorrow.

The year 2013 could well be the last page in the history of ‘united’ Andhra Pradesh as the state stands on the verge of a geographical separation.

If everything goes as per the government’s plan, Andhra Pradesh will get divided into two states – Telangana and (residual) Andhra Pradesh – early this year, bringing to an end the history of a state that remained united for 58 years.

Andhra Pradesh was the first state in the country to be created on a linguistic basis on November 1, 1956 by merging the erstwhile Andhra state and Hyderabad state.

Musharraf files moves court over treason trial

Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf Tuesday filed an appeal against the special court constituted to try him for treason.

The petition was filed in the Islamabad High Court against Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan’s decision rejected all three pleas of Musharraf against the special court formed to try him for treason, Geo News reported.

Musharraf is set to appear before the special court Jan 1.

Pakistan’s new ambassador to US assumes charge

Pakistan’s newly-appointed ambassador to the US Jalil Abbas Jilani has taken charge of the post after reaching Washington.

Jilani reached the US capital seven months after the previous envoy, Sherry Rehman, quit and returned home when the Pakistan People’s Party lost the general elections in May, Geo News reported.

This post was vacant since the resignation of Rahman.

Talking to Geo News after joining office Monday, Jilani said he would try to further strengthen Pakistan-US ties.
