Diabetes almost doubles risk of strokes in patients

A new study has revealed that people with diabetes have a 73 percent higher chance of being admitted to a hospital for heart failure than general population.

The study conducted on more than two million people with diabetes also suggested that diabetics are 38 percent more likely to die early, News.com.au reported.

The National Diabetes Audit, which covers England and Wales, also found that diabetics admitted to hospital for heart failure had more than quadruple the odds of dying in the following year compared to the general population.

A new study has found that women who are members of families with BRCA2 mutations but who test negative for the family-specific BRCA2 mutations are still at greater risk for developing breast cancer compared with women in the general population.

Women with certain mutations in their BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are at increased risk for breast cancer. However, the study suggested that it may not always be true.

Jharkhand Excise Minister Jai Prakash Bhai Patel Sunday was questioned by police in a weapons theft case, police sources said.

The role of the minister was under suspicion in the theft of weapons of his bodyguards. Two AK 47s, one 9 mm pistol and live cartridges went missing Nov 23 when the minister and his bodyguards were sleeping in a guest house of Hazaribagh district.

Three bodyguards were suspended after the weapons were stolen. Hazaribagh police took permission of the court two days ago for brain mapping and narco test of the bodyguards.

Modi ill informed or lying, needs pre-speech fact check: Omar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today hit back at Narendra Modi for his comment that women in the state did not enjoy equal rights, saying he is either ill informed or lying.

“He (Modi) very conveniently used me and my sister as examples to illustrate a point that has no bearing on truth. Either he lies or is ill informed,” Omar tweeted after the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate’s rally in Jammu today.

Millions vote in Rajasthan; BJP, Congress claim victory

About 25 million people voted across Rajasthan Sunday to pick a new 200-seat Rajasthan assembly in keenly fought elections which both the Congress and the BJP claimed they would win.

More than 60 percent of the state’s 40 million electorate had voted by 4 p.m., and the polling percentage could touch the 2008 tally of 66 when the final figures are calculated after polling ended at 5, officials said.

Magnitude 6.7 quake hits Indonesia

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s Maluku islands Sunday, the country’s Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency reported. There was, however, no immediate report of any casualty or damage to property.

The quake, which struck at 8.24 a.m, had its epicentre 250 km from Kepulauan Baratdaya Regency, Maluku province, 367 km from Maluku’s capital Ambon. It had a depth of 40 km under the sea, Xinhua reported.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake measured 6.3 on the a Richter scale.

BJP demands Chidambaram apology for remarks on Modi

The BJP Sunday demanded apology from Finance Minister P. Chidambaram over his sarcastic remarks on Narendra Modi’s views on the economy.

The party said the minister’s comments betray “incapacity and frustration” of the Congress to politically engage with the Gujarat chief minister.

In a statement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said Chidambaram based his statement on a report in a news daily and sarcastically asked economists to take note of Modi’s comments at a rally in Jodhpur Friday.

Modi is the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.

Two arrested for rape in Gurgaon

Two people have been arrested here for raping two teenaged girls, police said Sunday.

Saddam, 22, a native of Bihar, was arrested by Sadar police for raping a 14-year-old girl. The victim, also hailing from Bihar, lived in the neighbouring house in the slums near South City area.

Harbir, 20, was arrested by Udyog Vihar police from near Dundahera, where he was living on rent, for sexually assaulting his 15-year-old neighbour.

The accused, a tailor, belongs to Faridabad while the girl is from Uttar Pradesh.

US vice president to visit China

US Vice President Joe Biden will arrive in China on a two-day visit Dec 4-5, the Chinese foreign ministry said Sunday.

Biden will pay the official visit at the invitation of Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao, reported People’s Daily citing Qin Gang, the ministry’s spokesperson.

It will be Biden’s second visit to China as the US vice president.

‘B.A. Pass’ director set to make murder mystery

Ajay Bahl, who debuted as a director with neo noir film “B.A. Pass”, will now wield the megaphone for a murder mystery, inspired by a Japanese novel.

The film is tentatively titled “Informer”.

“I am scripting a film, which is inspired by a Japanese novel. It’s basically a murder mystery and I am thrilled about the project,” Bahl told IANS.

“We will start shooting by March 2014 and the film is tentatively titled ‘Informer’,” he added.
