Press body accuses Israel army of targeting journalists

The Foreign Press Association accused the Israeli army of “deliberately targeting” journalists after soldiers fired rubber bullets and threw stun grenades at photojournalists clearly identified as press.

In a statement yesterday, the Tel Aviv-based group, which represents journalists of all foreign media, including AFP, said troops had directly targeted a group of photographers covering skirmishes at Qalandia crossing between Jerusalem and Ramallah.

Tribals protest alleged gang rape, murder of woman

Demanding a CBI probe into the alleged gang rape and murder of a tribal woman, tribal members of political parties today demonstrated outside the residence of the Malkangiri collector here.

Alleging that the victim’s husband was behind the crime along with three of his friends on November 24 at Kudumulguma in the Orkel police station area, they accused police of trying to suppress the incident.

China reports 70,000 new HIV cases; 434,000 carriers

China reported some 70,000 new cases of HIV infections in the first nine months of the year taking the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS to 434,000, health authorities said today.

From January to September, 80.7 million people were tested for HIV, an increase of 8.9 per cent from the same period last year, National Health and Family Planning Commission said in a statement.

A total of 3,413 anti-virus treatment organisations have been set up in 31 provincial-level regions.

Advocate sentenced to life for killing wife

An advocate was sentenced to life imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 20,000 by a local court here for killing his wife.

According to prosecution sources, Santosh Kumari was immolated in November 2008 at Sisraulia village and later an FIR was lodged against her husband, Avinash Kumar Mishra.

Additional district and sessions judge Bchchu Singh held Avinash guilty yesterday.

JuD opposes proposed construction of wall along LoC

JuD chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed on Sunday said the Defia-e-Pakistan Council will intensify its campaign against the proposed construction of a wall along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Defia-e-Pakistan Council (Defence of Pakistan Council) is a platform of 30 religious and political parties led by the JuD.

“(Prime Minister) Nawaz Sharif should protect the borders of both west and east. The people of Pakistan are not ready to accept any visa relaxation and friendship policy of this government with India,” Saeed said at a rally on the Mall Road here.

Tarun Tejpal sent to 6-day police custody

A Goa court Sunday sent Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal to six days in police custody for interrogation over charges of rape filed by a now former colleague.

Tejpal’s arrest late Saturday and his remand Sunday followed two weeks of drama after the woman colleague accused the veteran journalist of sexually molesting her in a Goa resort twice in November.

The Tehelka editor, whose weekly magazine is known for investigative journalism, looked drained in his slightly crumpled black suit when he was escorted to the court Sunday.

Order on Zakia Jafri’s plea against clean chit to Modi today

The court of metropolitan magistrate is likely to give an order on the petition of Zakia Jafri, wife of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed in post-2002 Gujarat riots, who had contested against the closure report of SIT which gave a clean chit to the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the riots.

After arguments for over five months, the pronouncement of order was deferred on November 28 for December 2.

Ehsan Jafri and 68 other people were killed during in the Gulbarg society massacre during the 2002 Godhra riots.

Police thrash murder suspects in public view in AP

In a shocking incident, police in Guntakal town, allegedly thrashed in a full public view four suspects arrested for murder, to “counsel” them.

The footage of the incident, which reportedly occurred yesterday, was telecast today by local news channels.

Police picked up one Sekhar for allegedly murdering his father-in-law Mallaiah (65), along with his accomplices Somu, Peddanna alias Peddi and Hussain, on November 27 at Old Bus Stand in the town.

Sonia Gandhi to visit Rae Bareli today

Attachment proceedings begin against 13 Muzaffarnagar accused

The attachment proceedings have been initiated against 13 absconding accused in connection with the Lank village killings during the Muzaffarnagar riots.

Chief judicial magistrate KP Singh yesterday issued notices to the 13 accused under Section 82 of the CrPC, according to the prosecution of Special Investigation Team.

The accused, identified as Kapil, Nitu, Dushyant, Ajay, Sanjiv, Jagbir, Kuldeep, Mohit, Mahabir, Singh, Kalu, Satbir, and Debu, have been absconding since cases were registered against them.

Magistrate likely to pronounce order today on Zakia’s plea

The court of metropolitan magistrate is likely to pronounce its order today on Zakia Jafri’s plea protesting closure report of Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team, giving clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others with regard to alleged conspiracy behind the 2002 riots.

The pronouncement of order was deferred on October 28 for tomorrow after arguments on Jafri’s petition by her lawyers and SIT’s counsel had continued for five months before metropolitan magistrate B J Ganatra.

Pakistan selectors ignore Malik, Razzaq

Pakistani selectors have ignored senior players Shoaib Malik and Abdul Razzaq while announcing the T20 squad for the match against Afghanistan and the series against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates.

The only changes in the T20 squad that played recently against South Africa was the return of left-arm spinner, Zulfiqar Babar and the selection of uncapped opener Sharjeel Khan.

Malik and Razzaq had been recalled to the national side after long layoffs for the series against South Africa but both returned home from South Africa without playing a match due to fitness issues.

Banned Pak pacer Asif to begin a new innings in films

Beginning a new innings, Pakistan’s banned pacer Muhammad Asif has taken up acting career and will make his debut in a joint Indo-Pak project, entitled ‘India mein Pakistan’.

The cricketer, who is serving a five year ban for spot fixing since 2010, said he had decided to accept the acting role because he wanted to try something new.

“I am doing nothing and I have to look ahead and this project appeared to be a good challenge to me so I have accepted it,” he told reporters on Sunday.

But he insisted he didn’t take up the offer just for money.

Vinod Kambli still in ICU, but stable

Former cricketer Vinod Kambli, admitted to Lilavati Hospital here on Friday after he apparently suffered a heart attack, continues to be in ICU and is under observation.

“Kambli continues to be in ICU. He is stable and under observation,” a hospital source said tonight.

The 41-year-old was rushed to the suburban hospital by police personnel after he complained of chest pain while driving his car and sought help.

Manohar Parrikar calls on AP CM

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is on a short visit to the city, called on his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Kiran Kumar Reddy here today.

Group: Egypt’s government must free Morsi aides

Human Rights Watch called today on Egypt’s military-backed government to immediately release from detention five aides of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The New York-based advocacy group said in a statement that the five have been held at an undisclosed destination since July 3, the day when the military ousted Morsi after millions demonstrated demanding he step down.

It said the five were among nine close Morsi aides detained that day. The other four have been transferred to regular prisons and are facing criminal charges.

At least 20 dead in air bombardment in Syria

At least 20 people, including two women and four children, died Sunday in a new aerial bombardment in the city of Al Bab, in the northern province of Aleppo, the Syrian Human Rights Observatory reported.

The attack was carried out by helicopters belonging to the regime of President Bashar Al Assad, which dropped barrels filled with explosives into the town, killing a score of people and wounding dozens more.
