Cricket Australia (CA) Monday congratulated Ahmed on winning the prestigious award.

Ahmed expressed his joy at being named the sportsperson of the year, which caps off a great year for him.

Cane growers demonstrate before shakkar bhavan

Demanding that the State government immediately announce support price for sugar and clear outstanding arrears, a large number of sugarcane farmers staged a dharna in front of “Shakkar Bhavan” here on Monday.

The cane growers, belonging to Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, bemoaned that they were put to severe hardships due to the increased rates of fertilizers, diesel, labour wages and other incidental expenses. They also complained that the government was fleecing them with five per cent VAT and several crores of rupees in the form of taxes on molasses.

Private Employee Body fished out from lake

A 28-year-old Private employee died after accidentally falling into the lake in Shamirpet police limits.

According to police, the deceased, S Vinod Kumar of Neredmet, went to the Shamirpet lake with his friends on Sunday for celebrity. However, he was tried to swim in lake, accidentally slipped and was drowned into the lake. The body has been retrieved from the lake and handed over to the relatives after an autopsy was conducted at the Gandhi Hospital mortuary. (INN)

India’s current account deficit falls to $5.2 billion in Q2

India’s current account deficit declined to $5.2 billion in July-September quarter of the current financial year as compared to $21 billion recorded in the corresponding quarter of last year, on the back of rise in exports and decline in gold imports, government data showed Monday.

As proportion of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), the current account deficit during the quarter under review is 1.2 percent, sharply down from 5 percent recorded in the corresponding quarter in 2012-13, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The outgoing High Commissioner of Pakistan to India, Salman Bashir on Monday said that Pakistan does not believe in a nuclear arms race or any arms race with India or any other nation, and added that strategic restraint is the answer

“Pakistan does not believe in a nuclear arms race or any arms race with India or with anybody else. We certainly do not want to see the nuclear threshold being lowered. We believe that strategic restraint is the answer,” he told media here today.

He further said that Pakistan would continue to make constructive proposals to India for strategic stability.

Two killed in train accidents

A 78-year-old man injured after he was hit by a train while he was trying to cross the track near lalaguda railway track on Saturday.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening. The Secunderabad Railway police later identified the deceased as R M Kannabhiram, a retired railway employee and resident of Lalaguda and he was died on Dec 2 early hours at Gandhi Hospital.

Rayala Telangana proposal a tactful move of Congress?

The buzz in Andhra Pradesh political circles is that the Congress high command has tactfully floated the idea of creating “Rayala Telangana” state, rather than Telangana, to checkmate leaders on both sides of the regional divide.

Two Commit suicide in Panjagutta & Musheerabad police station limits

In a shocking incident, a 19 year-old boy committed suicide by hanging at her residence in B S Maqta of Panjagutta police limits.

The deceased, M Srinath, S/o Ramulu was a student and committed suicide on Sunday night. He was taking the extreme step due to personnel problems. Panjagutta police said.

Haryana student shoots teacher over denial of roll number

The director of a hotel management institute under Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU) in this Haryana town was critically injured Monday when a former student allegedly shot him from close range, police said.

Ashish Dahiya, director of the Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management (IHTM) and an associate professor in the university, was admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) here where doctors said his condition was critical. Dahiya received two bullets in the stomach.

Police later arrested the assailant, Varinder Kumar.

Five-term Shiv Sena MP Rawale sacked for dissidence

The Shiv Sena Monday sacked senior leader Mohan Rawale, at five terms its longest serving Lok Sabha MP, for dissidence, a party spokesperson said.

The expulsion was ordered shortly after Rawale addressed a press conference in which he launched a no-holds-barred attack on the party leadership and alleged that the Shiv Sena was becoming “a party of touts”.

The developments came just four days after a stern Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray made it clear that all those who did not like his leadership were “free to leave the party”.

One person arrested allegedly tried to Rape a minor girl

A 40-year-old man was today thrashed by public at Rajendranagar area before being handed over to police after he allegedly tried to rape a minor girl, police said today. Bajrang Singh, a laborer, a resident of Erraboda of rajendranagar, where the 12-year-old girl also lives, took her to a toddy shop this afternoon and purchased the drink.
He then gave it to her and consumed the same himself and allegedly attempted to rape her while she was in an intoxicated state, police said quoting locals.

Muslim schoolgirl wearing hijab attacked in Australia

A young Muslim girl wearing hijab was attacked by a group of teenagers in Wantirna South, a suburb in Melbourne.

The high school student was walking home from Westfield Knox along Stud Road when she was set upon by a group of teenagers, Herald Sun reported Monday.

Knox councillor Joe Cossari, condemning the attack, said it was a racial attack.

Cossari said the teenager was punched to the ground and kicked, but did not report the assault to police because she feared reprisals.

Chidambaram pegs economic growth at 5 percent for 2013-14

The Indian economy is on the path of recovery. Growth will accelerate in the coming quarter and is expected to be around five percent for the current financial year, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said Monday.

The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth rose to 4.8 percent in the quarter ended September as compared to 4.4 percent in the previous quarter, according to latest data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Average growth in the first two quarters of the current financial year stood at 4.6 percent.

Jagan slams Rayala Telangana slogan

Driver held for girl rape

The Jubilee Hills police on Monday arrested one driver who allegedly raped a 19-year-old girl working as a sales executive in private firm.

The accused – G Kondal (21) S/o Ramchandraiah of Film nagar Jubilee Hills were arrested on Dec 2, Raped the girl from resident of road no 10 Banjara Hills on few days back. A manhunt was launched to arrest the accused after police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the victim’s parents. Gangrape case: SC seeks Centre’s reply on laws on juvenility

Nearly a year after the brutal gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old girl here, the Supreme Court today sought the Centre’s stand on criminal courts’ power to decide ‘juvenility’ of an offender, who are between the age of 16 to 18 years, in heinous crimes.

A bench headed by Justice B S Chauhan issued notice and asked the Ministry of Women and Child Development to respond within four weeks to the plea that a criminal court cannot be “ousted” from judicial function to try juveniles for offences covered under IPC.
