Afridi describes Yousuf, Akhtar as “heckle and jeckle”

A war of words has broken out between three big names of Pakistan cricket with veteran all-rounder Shahid Afridi describing former stars, Muhammad Yousuf and Shoaib Akhtar as “heckle and jeckle”.

The dispute broke out after Yousuf and Akhtar made critical comments about Afridi’s performance in Pakistan’s recent ODI series against South Africa on recent television talk shows.

Yousuf and Akhtar were particularly critical about Afridi but when the former captain returned home yesterday from South Africa, he minced no words in lashing out at his two former teammates.

Dhoni wins 2013 LG People’s Choice Award

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won this year’s LG People’s Choice Award, thus becoming only the second Indian cricketer to win the coveted prize after just-retired Sachin Tendulkar.

Dhoni has now become only the third cricketer to win this award after Tendulkar, who was the first-ever recipient in 2010, and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, who won it in 2011 and 2012.

Other nominees for this year’s LG People’s Choice Award were Australia’s Michael Clarke, England’s Alastair Cook, India’s Virat Kohli, and South Africa’s AB de Villiers.

Misbah wants to make T20 comeback

Pakistan’s Test and ODI captain Misbah-ul-Haq has expressed his willingness to revive his Twenty20 career, provided the Cricket Board (PCB) and national selectors want him to do so.

“I stepped away from T20 Internationals to give youngsters a chance. But I have continued to play in domestic T20 cricket and if the selectors and board want me to play T20 Internationals again I will do it,” Misbah told reporters in Lahore.

The senior batsman also insisted that he was under no pressure while leading the Test and ODI sides despite the national team’s poor performances in recent times.

BJP shows concern for Muslim auto drivers

General secretary, state unit Bharatya Janata Party, Mr. N V V N Prabhakar demanded repealing of GO 108 and began 24 hours hunger strike. He said that police are issuing heavy challans on seven seaters and harassing them. These drivers mostly belong to backward classes or unemployed youth while the police are imposing heavy fines of Rs. 1000 to 2000 which is unwarranted. Majority of the auto drivers belong to Muslim communities thus police are targeting them but the leaders don’t seem to take steps to save them from police harassment.

Janata Dal United (JD-U) party leader Shivanand Tewari said on Tuesday Modi’s reference to Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s sister in context of Article 370 was dirty and disgusting.

Low levels of vitamin D linked to brain damage

A new research has suggested that a diet low in vitamin D causes damage to the brain.

In addition to being essential for maintaining bone health, newer evidence shows that vitamin D serves important roles in other organs and tissue, including the brain.

The UK study led by University of Kentucky researchers showed that middle-aged rats that were fed a diet low in vitamin D for several months developed free radical damage to the brain, and many different brain proteins were damaged as identified by redox proteomics.

Researchers in this study tested the efficacy of weekly vitamin D2 supplementation for six months on depression in women with type 2 diabetes. Depression significantly improved following supplementation.

Girl ends life after mother stops her from eating out

A college student allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison after her mother stopped her from going out to have a road side snack, police said on Monday.

The deceased, Shabina (25), a B.Com student of Geetanjali College residing in Congress Nagar in the old city area, was apparently miffed with her mother after the latter did not allow her to go out with her friend to have ‘pani-puri’ on Saturday evening.

Vinod Kambli to be discharged from hospital today

The condition of former cricketer Vinod Kambli, admitted to Lilavati Hospital here on Friday after he apparently suffered a heart attack, improved on Monday and he will be discharged on Tuesday.

HC restrains cable operators from illegally showing Dhoom 3

The Delhi High Court today restrained cable operators from illegally “communicating or distributing” the movie ‘Dhoom 3’, starring Aamir Khan and Abhishek Bachchan, on a plea by its producer Yash Raj Films (YRF).

Justice M L Mehta also asked various internet service providers, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance, MTNL and others to block those sites which illegally show the movie within 48 hours of receiving a written complaint as well as location or url (web address) of the site from the production house.
