India needs market-based energy pricing to meet vast needs: PM

With India expected to become world’s third largest energy consumer in seven years, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday said market-based pricing and technology are essential for meeting the nation’s needs in this regard.

Speaking at the 8th Asia Gas Partnership Summit here, he said India, which currently is world’s seventh largest energy producer, “needs to increase its energy supply by 3 to 4 times within next two decades.”

Ingredients:

• 500 g Mutton (cleaned and cut)
• 150 g Oil
• 200 g Onions (sliced)
• 50 g Whole Garam Masala
• 80 g Ginger-Garlic Paste
• 25 g Red Chili Powder
• 15 g Turmeric Powder
• 20 g Coriander Powder
• 15 g Coriander Seeds
• 150 g Yoghurt
• 6 Red Chilies (whole)
• Salt (to taste)

Procedure:

• Heat oil.
• Add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
• Add in the ginger-garlic paste, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt and whole garam masala. Stir well.

ONGC to appeal against Gujarat High Court order

State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) on Tuesday said it will appeal against the Gujarat High Court order asking it to pay up to Rs 10,000 crore in past royalty dues, saying it cannot pay the levy on a price it hasn’t realised.

“We have seen the judgement but certainly we will go for appeal against the judgement (in the Supreme Court),” ONGC Chairman and Managing Director Sudhir Vasudeva said on sidelines of the 8th Asia Gas Partnership Summit here.

Muzaffarnagar riots: 177 arrests made so far

Police has arrested 177 persons while 25 others have surrendered so far in connection with the recent riots in the district, Special Investigation Team (SIT) sources said.

More than 60 persons were killed and over 40,000 displaced in communal violence that had broken out in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas in September this year.

According to SIT constituted by Uttar Pradesh government, out of 6244 people named in the 538 riots cases, 177 people have been arrested while 25 people have surrendered in court.

Will try to introduce Telengana Bill during Winter Session: Nath

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath on Tuesday said the government will try to introduce the Telengana Bill during the Winter Session of Parliament, after all parties agreed to it, at the all-party meet chaired by Speaker Meira Kumar.

‘All political parties have agreed with the government on the Telengana Bill, and, so we will try to introduce it as soon as possible,” said Nath after the all-party meet.

Huffington Post removes Sonia Gandhi from rich list

Huffington Post has removed UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi from its list of world’s richest leaders.

In a note at the end of the story, the Huffington Post said: “Sonia Gandhi and the former emir of Qatar Hamid bin Khalifa al-Thani have been removed from this list.”

“Gandhi was originally included based on a listing on a third party site which was subsequently called into question. Our editors have been unable to verify the amount, removed the link, and regret any confusion. Qatar’s emir was succeeded by his son Tamim in 2013,” the note said.

Bangalore techie’s rape: Two resort staff detained

Police today detained for questioning two employees of a backwater island resort at nearby Pozhiyur in connection with rape of a 40-year-old Bangalore-based IT professional there last month.

According to police sources, both of them were migrant workers from a north eastern state and they were being questioned. Their antecedents were also being verified, the sources said.

The woman, a professional working with an IT company, was allegedly raped by two persons in the star-category resort in the wee hours on November 28.

UN launches fresh Philippines typhoon aid appeal

The United Nations refugee agency has launched a fresh appeal for emergency aid for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, which smashed into the Philippines last month, leaving nearly 7,500 people dead or missing.

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said it now needs USD 19.2 million to address “primary protection issues” for devastated communities, more than double the USD 8.3 million it has raised so far.

“Almost a month after the typhoon, its effects show no sign of abating,” said Bernard Kerblat, UNHCR representative in the Philippines.

Thousands of Ukrainian protesters massed outside parliament in Kiev on Tuesday as lawmakers were set to debate a vote of no confidence in the government over the scrapping of a deal with the European Union.

The opposition has called for a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov amid days of mass protests over the abandoning of the historic pact, the biggest protests in the ex-Soviet country since the pro-Western Orange Revolution in 2004.

But it was unclear whether it would muster enough support to pass the motion.

Mexico finds 64 bodies in mass graves

A total of 64 bodies have been found in mass graves in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, authorities said as they wrapped up a probe of alleged victims of a drug cartel.

A total of 35 graves were found, an official at the attorney general’s office said yesterday.

The search in an area bordering the drug-plagued state of Michoacan stemmed from a probe into the November 3 disappearance of two federal police officers. They were not among the bodies found.

Chinese official faces retrial in child rape case?

A former Chinese county official sentenced to five years in prison for raping a four-year-old girl was today retried after the victim’s family alleged that he got away with a lighter sentence.

The People’s Court in Daguan county in Yunnan province conducted the trial in a closed proceeding but did not deliver any verdict, the Chen Weibiao, the girl’s lawyer said.

Rape accused Guo Yuchi, a former official of Daguan, stood trial again following the “lenient” punishment he received.

Guo was convicted at a trial in September of raping the girl after taking her to his apartment.

Pope Francis has revealed he once made money by kicking people out of clubs as a bouncer.

During a visit to a parish church in Rome at the weekend, Pope Francis got chatty about his credentials.

According to news.com.au, the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, reported that the pope told a group of parishioners at the church of San Cirillo Alessandrino about his earlier jobs.

The pope’s earlier days jobs also included sweeping floors and running laboratory tests, according to a report from the Catholic News Service.

Chinese woman sentenced for slapping bus drivers to death

A Chinese woman, who slapped a bus driver to death, on Tuesday received a three year suspended sentence on the ground that she repented her action.

Defendant Xu Yumin, 41 had an argument with driver Luo Xingang, 39, on May 8 when she was prevented from getting off through the entrance-only front door in the provincial capital of Harbin, the court which tried her said.

Xu took the same bus again on the evening of May 12 and slapped Luo, causing a fatal brain hemorrhage.

Xu was detained after he died in hospital of a cerebral haemorrhage.

Pak national released from Guwahati Central Jail after 14 yrs

An arrested Pakistani national has been released from the Guwahati Central Jail after 14 years and sent back to his home country after the Gauhati high Court acquitted him of the charges levelled against him.

The 45-year old Pakistani national identified as Fasiullah Hussaini was released from the jail yesterday and sent with police escort to Delhi for being handed over to Pakistan Rangers at the Wagah border with the help of BSF, jail authorities said today.

160 sea pirates languishing in Indian prisons: Navy

Some 160 sea pirates, arrested by the Indian Navy in the Gulf of Aden, were languishing in Indian prisons as the governments of their native countries were not ready to take them back, a senior naval officer said today.

“We don’t know what to do with the arrested pirates from Gulf of Aden. Countries like Seychelles, Kenya and others have refused to take them back, as their prisons are full. There are some 160 such pirates in our prisons,” Commodore Amar K Mahadevan, Naval Officer In-Charge (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) told reporters here.

Indian police don’t understand their role: Rights group

There is something seriously wrong with Indian police — they don’t seem to understand their role in a democracy, an official of an international human rights organisation said on Tuesday.

The official of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) was referring to the public thrashing of four murder suspects by Anantpur police in Andhra Pradesh.

“There is something seriously wrong with policing. A modern democracy needs a modern police. The police doesn’t seem to understand their role in a democracy, but are stuck in the colonial-feudal mould,” said CHRI director Maja Daruwala.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa Tuesday denied announcing any new scheme during her Nov 28 campaign for her party candidate for the Dec 4 Yercaud by-election.

“It is vehemently denied that any announcement of new schemes was made while I was campaigning for the AIADMK party candidate Nov 28 in Yercaud constituency,” Jayalalithaa told the Election Commission in her reply to its notice.

She also told the commission her name was misspelt in the notice issued to her. The commission spelt her name as Jayalalitha whereas it should be Jayalalithaa.
