India’s current account vulnerability falls, but risks remain

Measures to curb demand for imported gold have contributed to a sharp narrowing of India’s current account deficit, global consultancy firm Capital Economics said.

“This should make the rupee less vulnerable to shifts in global investor sentiment,” it said in a report released today.

Preliminary balance of payments data published on Monday showed that the current account deficit fell to USD 5.2 billion in the July-September quarter of 2013-14, or 1.2 per cent of GDP.

“The decrease was due to a pick-up in exports and a slump in gold imports, it noted.

Private sector output drops for fifth successive month: HSBC

India’s services sector activity witnessed a moderate improvement in November over the previous month, even while indicating the fifth successive monthly contraction, an HSBC survey said today.

The HSBC/Markit Purchasing Managers Index for the services industry inched up to 47.2 in November from 47.1 in October, the fifth sub-50.0 reading and indicated an output contraction across the Indian service economy.

An index value of below 50 indicates contraction.

Sensex down over 39 points in early trade

The benchmark BSE Sensex today fell over 39 points in early trade on sustained selling by funds amid a weak trend in other Asian markets.

The 30-share index, which had lost 43.09 points in the previous session, fell further by 39.47 points, or 0.19 per cent, to 20,815.45, led by losses in stocks of banking, oil and gas, auto and FMCG sectors.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty declined by 13.75 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 6,188.10.

Kashmir is a flashpoint that can trigger a fourth war between Pakistan and India anytime, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said, seeking an early settlement of the issue.

He also said he had a dream of seeing Indian Kashmir free and hoped to see it happen during his lifetime.

“Kashmir is a flashpoint and can trigger a fourth war between the two nuclear powers at anytime,” he was quoted as saying by the Dawn daily in his brief address to the budget session of the ‘Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Council’ in Pak-occupied Kashmir yesterday.

Court rejects Tejpal’s plea for fan in police lock-up

A Goa court on Wednesday rejected an application filed by Tehelka magazine Editor Tarun Tejpal seeking permission to get a fan installed in the police lock up where he is being kept. Judicial Magistrate First Class Kshama Joshi rejected the application by Tejpal, who has been lodged in Panaji police custody since Saturday in connection with a sexual assault case.

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari was among the first few voters to cast his vote at the Nirmal Bhawan polling booth in New Delhi constituency on Wednesday. Aam Admi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, who is contesting from the New Delhi constituency against incumbent Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and BJP leader V. Gupta, cast his vote within the first half an hour of polling. Hubble traces subtle signals of water on distant hazy planets

Researchers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have found faint signatures of water in the atmospheres of five distant planets.

The five planets-WASP-17b, HD209458b, WASP-12b, WASP-19b and XO-1b-orbit nearby stars.

The strengths of their water signatures varied. WASP-17b, a planet with an especially puffed-up atmosphere, and HD209458b had the strongest signals.

The signatures for the other three planets, WASP-12b, WASP-19b and XO-1b, also are consistent with water.

Foreign delegation to visit polling booths in Delhi

A 36-member foreign delegation will visit all major polling stations to witness the voting procedure for the Delhi assembly elections, an official said Wednesday.

“The delegation comprises members from eight countries including Senegal, Lebanon, Nigeria, Jordan and Zambia,” Special Chief Electoral Officer, Surbhir Singh said.

The team is in the national capital after witnessing elections in Rajasthan.

During their visit, the team would see the polling procedure in constituencies like New Delhi, Shalimar Bagh, Krishna Nagar, Patel Nagar and some other prominent centres, added Singh.

Nitesh Rane released on bail

Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane’s son Nitesh, who was arrested for damaging a toll booth and beating its operators Tuesday evening was released on bail early Wednesday.

Nitesh Rane has been asked to report at Goa’s Pernem police station for three days as per conditions of the bail, and has also been told not to leave the country, police said.

The incident occurred Tuesday evening when Rane’s entourage was asked to pay toll at Dhargal on the Goa border.

Two ‘dancing’ black holes sighted at heart of remote galaxy

Astronomers using NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have spotted what appears to be two supermassive black holes, at the heart of a remote galaxy, circling each other like dance partners.

Follow-up observations with the Australian Telescope Compact Array near Narrabri, Australia, and the Gemini South telescope in Chile revealed unusual features in the galaxy, including a lumpy jet thought to be the result of one black hole causing the jet of the other to sway.

60 voting machines replaced during Delhi polls

A total of 60 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were replaced before and during polling in all the constituencies in the capital, said an election commission officer.

“In ward number AC 55 (Trilokpuri), eight EVMs have been replaced, whereas in ward number AC 67 (Babarpur Shahdara), four EVMs were replaced. This is in addition to the four being replaced in both ward AC 52 (Tughlakabad) and AC 23 (Karol Bagh),” said Additional Chief Electoral Officer Neeraj Bharti.

“We have enough EVM backups to conduct the polls in a peaceful manner,” he added.

Night temperature in Kashmir dips below freezing point

Cold wave conditions continued without respite across the Kashmir Valley Wednesday, and night temperatures dropped several notches below freezing point.

“The minimum temperature was minus 2.7 degrees Celsius in Srinagar today (Wednesday). It was minus 5.2 in Pahalgam and minus 1.8 in Gulmarg. Minimum temperature today dropped to minus 12.8 in Leh and minus 9.7 in Kargil town of Ladakh region,” an official of the local weather office said.

The official said night temperature was 8.7 degrees in Jammu city Wednesday, a degree less than normal for this time of year.

Assembly poll results will influence parliament’s winter session: BJP

The results of the assembly elections will influence the upcoming winter session of parliament, the BJP said Wednesday.

“Much of the colour of this parliament (session Dec 5-20) would be determined by the outcome of the election counting on Dec 8,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said here after a meeting with the party leaders.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Lakki ‘assassinated’

Hassan Lakki, a Hezbollah leader, was “assassinated” near his home in Beirut on Wednesday, the militant group reportedly said.

The militant group said that Lakki was killed while he on his way back home from work, as per a BBC news report.

Hezbollah blamed Israel for the killing and said that several unsuccessful attempts were made earlier on Lakki’s life as well.

However, Israel has yet not reacted to the allegations.
