GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) has bagged the prestigious Center for Asia Pacific Aviation’s airport marketing award 2013.

The award, in the category of 15 million passengers per annum, was presented recently to GHIAL at a ceremony held during the 10th Annual CAPA aviation awards for excellence at Amsterdam.

16-year-old girl raped; accused arrested

A 16-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped by a 24-year-old youth at Berli Khurd village, about 20 km from here, police said today.

The victim yesterday lodged a complaint alleging that when she was going to a field in the village to answer the nature’s call, Dharmender allegedly sexually assaulted her.

She further alleged that when she tried to raise the alarm, he shut her mouth with a piece of cloth and threatened her with dire consequences.

The police has registered a case of rape and criminal intimidation against Dharmender under the SC/ST Act.

Goa Govt. will ensure justice in Tejpal sexual assault case: Parrikar

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday ensured that justice will be done in the sexual assault case filed against recused Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal, and said the job of the government is to prosecute the charges levelled against the latter in the case. “I will ensure justice, even to Tejpal. Justice does not mean punishing someone. It is upto the court to decide on this. The government’s job is to investigate the issue, and if it has enough evidence, then only it is prosecuted,” he told media here today.

Dikshit will fare well in Delhi polls: Rahul Gandhi

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will fare well in the Delhi assembly elections as her government has done a lot of work.

“Sheila Dikshit has done a lot of good work for Delhi, so she will do well,” Gandhi told reporters after casting his vote.

Dikshit, who is serving her third term as the chief minister, is getting a tough fight from the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Harsh Vardhan, and new poll scene entrant Aam Aadmi Party of Arvind Kejriwal.

Pakistan cannot win a war in my lifetime: Manmohan Singh

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday said that there was no scope of Pakistan winning a war with India in his lifetime.

“There is no scope of Pakistan winning any such war in my lifetime,” the prime minister said during a brief interaction with reporters at a Navy Day reception here.

He was reacting to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s remark that Kashmir is “a flashpoint and can trigger a fourth war” with India. Sharif made the remark during his visit to Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Over 1,000 sex workers vote in Delhi

Some 1,050 sex workers living in Delhi’s infamous G.B. Road red light area Wednesday voted in the assembly elections, thanks to an enrolment drive by the election commission.

Khairati Lal Bhola, president of NGO Bhartiya Patita Uddhar Sabha, said around 70 percent of the over 1,500 sex workers with voter ID cards went to cast their votes in Ballimaran and Ajmeri Gate in the afternoon.

“The others were either not in Delhi, not well or were not allowed to vote as there were some discrepancies with their ID cards,” Bhola said.

Researchers have suggested that Amlodipine, a 4 pence-a-day cheap blood pressure capsule, could potentially help in beating vascular dementia that results from problems with the blood supply to the brain.

To test their hypothesis, scientists at the Queen’s University Belfast will be holding a two-year 2.25 million-pound trial of the drug on almost 600 dementia patients, the Daily Express reported.

Previous smaller-scale studies have reported that blood pressure drugs help lower the risk of dementia, but the new study will specifically test the effects of Amlodipine.

Sai presented false identity, excuses before arrest: Delhi Police

A senior Delhi Police officer on Wednesday detailed the operation that led to the arrest of Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai and three others im Pipli, Kurukshetra.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) S.B.K Singh said the arrest of Sai took long because he presented a false identity and several excuses. It was only after he was brought to Delhi and interrogated that he revealed his identity.

TRS chief rejects Rayala Telangana proposal, calls for shutdown tomorrow

Expressing displeasure over the Centre’s reported proposal of Rayala Telangana, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has called for a shutdown tomorrow opposing this merger.

He further asserted that people of Telangana would never accept a move to merge Telangana and some districts from the Rayalseema region.

Rao also said that TRS would protest if the Centre approves the proposed Rayala Telangana.

According to sources, there is a proposal to include two districts of Ralayaseema namely Kurnool and Anantapur into Telanaga, which originally has ten districts.

India not afraid to fight a war, says Lt.-Gen Hoon, reacting to Sharif

Reacting to the statement of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that if a solution to the Kashmir issue is delayed, it may lead to a war with India, retired Lieutenant General P.N Hoon said “if Pakistan wants to fight, the Indian army is ready and is not frightened”.

Speaking here today, General Hoon said that Pakistan can never be trusted.

Delhi assembly polls: Over 56 percent voting till 4 p.m.

Over 56 percent voters had on Wednesday exercised their franchise till 4 p.m. for choosing candidates for the 70-member Delhi State Assembly.

Preference for large smartphones eating into tablet sales

As increasing number of consumers are opting for smartphones with large screens, research firm IDC has revised its global tablet shipments downwards by over 6 million units to 221.3 million this year.

Earlier, it had projected worldwide tablet shipments to touch 227.4 million units in 2013 from about 143.7 million units last year.

“Worldwide tablet shipments are expected to reach 221.3 million units in 2013, down slightly from a previous forecast of 227.4 million but still 53.5 per cent above 2012 levels,” IDC said in a statement.

Man kills wife, cuts body into three pieces

A 30-year-old woman was murdered allegedly by her husband who chopped her body into three pieces inside their flat in Bhayander in the district.

The murder took place in the high-profile Golden Nest apartment in Bhayander yesterday and the accused – Girish Pote (29) — was arrested at night, Thane Rural Police said today.

Pote and his wife Madhuwanti used to have frequent quarrels over several issues, including financial matters, API Satish Shivarkar of the Navghar police station said.
