Income inequality ‘defining challenge’ for US: Obama

President Barack Obama Wednesday said income inequality is the “defining challenge” for the US while a growing middle class is the engine of the country’s economic prosperity.

Speaking during an event hosted by the Washington-based think tank the Center for American Progress, Obama said the rich Americans took a disproportionately large portion of wealth and the US society was getting increasingly unequal, Xinhua reported.

The challenge is posing a “profound” threat to the American Dream and it is an issue that Washington should tackle seriously, he said.

UAE, Iran discuss relations

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iran have held talks over enhancing bilateral relations and to ensure security and prosperity for the people of the region.

The discussions were held among Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, the visiting Iranian foreign minister, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the crown prince of Dubai, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai.

Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the UAE.

10 killed, 61 injured in Iraq attacks

At least 10 people were killed and 61 wounded in separate bomb attacks, including a coordinated suicide bombing, in Iraq Wednesday, police said.

The deadliest attack occurred in northern Iraq, where gunmen and suicide bombers attacked a police intelligence office in Kirkuk city, about 250 km from Baghdad. At least five people were killed and 53 wounded, many of them security members, Xinhua reported citing a police source.

‘Russia, Ukraine to strengthen cooperation’

Russia would strengthen cooperation with Ukraine in various areas as the two countries remained important strategic partners, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday.

“In order to continue cooperation and develop economic relations between Russia and Ukraine, we have agreed with the (Ukrainian) prime minister, and the presidents have been negotiating this as well, to advance our work in a number of sectors,” reported Xinhua citing Medvedev.

Petition questioning Musharraf’s trial rejected

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has rejected a petition challenging the constitution of a special court for the treason trial of former Paksitan president Pervez Musharraf, Online news agency reported.

During the hearing, IHC Justice Noorul Huque Qureshi observed Wednesday that the petitioner Riaz Hanif Rahi should have approached the proper forum, while the Registrar office recorded its objection that the petitioner was not the affected person, hence, his right to challenge did not hold.

17 killed in Syrian violence

At least 17 people, including a judge and a military officer, were killed and 30 wounded Wednesday when rebels fired homemade rockets at two districts of Syria’s Aleppo city, the state media said.

The rockets struck the city’s Meridian and al-Furqan residential areas, Xinhua reported citing SANA news agency.

The state TV released footage of the attacked areas, showing scenes of destruction and bloodshed.

UN Security Council condemns slams attacks on aid workers

The UN Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned deadly attacks in two Afghan provinces last week which led to the death of nine aid workers.

In a statement, the UNSC stressed at the need to “bring perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.”

Putin favours amnesty proposal for inmates

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that a proposal about giving amnesty to inmates on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Russian Constitution should get a go ahead.

“We are going to improve this document together with federal lawmakers, and I ask you to actively engage in this process,” Xinhua reported citing Putin while telling head of the Human Rights Council Mikhail Fedotov.

After studying Fedotov’s proposal about the amnesty, Putin said he agreed with the document “in general”.

Kerry visits Israel amid reports of faltering Israeli-Palestinian talks

Amid reports of Israeli-Palestinian talks losing momentum, US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Israel late Wednesday.

Kerry has arrived in a bid to push forward negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, which appear to be stuck, mainly due to Israel’s ongoing construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem settlements, Xinhua reported.

US warns of ‘spill-over violence’ from Syria crisis

The US is very concerned by violence in Lebanon and sees the killing of a Hezbollah commander as an example of negative impact from the Syria conflict, the US State Department said Wednesday.

“We’ve been very concerned by recurring instances of sectarian and political violence in Lebanon,” Xinhua reported citing State Department spokesperson Marie Harf at a press conference.

China to improve school conditions in poor regions

China has decided to improve basic schooling conditions for compulsory education in poverty-stricken areas, according to a new document unveiled Wednesday.

“Schools in poor areas are a weak link in China’s education cause,” Xinhua reported citing a statement released after an executive meeting of the State Council, the country’s Cabinet, presided over by Premier Li Keqiang.

Improving the basic school conditions in poor areas is a move to safeguard the basic livelihood and promote equal access to education and social equity, it said.

Singer Niall Horan’s mother Maura says that her son is not ready for a serious relationship.

Horan was recently linked with model Barbara Palvin.

“I don’t know what’s gonna happen in three years. I don’t even know what is gonna happen tomorrow,” Phelps told reporters.

“I’ve said 100 times if I feel like coming back…I could. But I’m not saying I am going to,” he said.

Deadly rocket attack on regime in Syria’s Aleppo

Rockets killed at least 18 people today in regime-held areas of Syria’s main northern city of Aleppo, a focal point of the 33-month conflict pitting loyalists against rebels.
