30 furniture shops gutted in Delhi

At least 30 furniture shops were gutted by a fire early Thursday morning here, a fire brigade officer said.

The incident occurred in east Delhi’s Trilokpuri area early due to an electrical short circuiting in one of the shops, the officer said.

At least 16 fire tenders were pressed into service and the flames were doused in two hours, he added.

BJP MP Murarilal Singh passes away in Raipur

BJP MP from Chhattisgarh’s Sarguja constituency, Murarilal Singh, passed away today at a private hospital here following a brain stroke.

Singh, 62, died at Ramkrishna Care Hospital early this morning due to brain stroke, a doctor attending him said.

Murarilal was admitted to the hospital five days back after he suffered a heart attack, the doctor said.

Teacher held for engaging students in homosexual act

A teacher of a government school in Mettupalayam was arrested today for allegedly forcing students into homosexual acts, police said.

Venkatesh (30), a drawing teacher, staying on the first floor of the school allegedly used to force students, staying in an adjacent room into the sexual act, police said.

A student reported the matter to the staff of a nearby Tamil Nadu Electricity Board office, who managed to lock the teacher inside the room and inform the police, who after preliminary inquiry arrested Venkatesh, they said.

BJP questions basis of pension to Muzaffarnagar riots victims

BJP today questioned the basis of UP government’s move to provide pension to those injured in the Muzaffarnagar riots, and demanded that such help be extended to all injured in recent communal clashes in the state.

“BJP has no objection if the government extends financial support to those who suffered injuries in the riots, but the basis on which it should be given must be clear… Several riots took place in the state in the recent past before Muzaffarnagar, and those suffered injuries there should also be helped,” BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said.

Kingpin of Vizag robbery held in Mumbai

Police have arrested an alleged kingpin of a sensational robbery that took place here in 2012 from Mumbai and recovered around 220 gm of gold ornaments worth Rs 5.5 lakh from him.

Anees Saghir Khan (32) was apprehended two days back for allegedly masterminding the robbery at a jewellery shop here last year.

Police had arrested three out of eight persons, including two Naval personnel, in connection with the heist on October 19, 2012, but failed to recover stolen booty from them.

Pakistani drowns daughters, self over Dubai debts: reports

A Pakistani depressed over debts in Dubai drowned his two daughters and emailed his wife to wish her a better life before killing himself, reports in the emirate said today.

The 40-year-old strangled and drowned the girls, aged two and seven, in the bathroom of the family’s villa on Sunday night before drowning himself in the compound’s swimming pool, the Emarat Al-Youm newspaper said.

The man had been suffering from depression due to mounting personal debts and was having problems with his wife who was attending a concert at the time of the deaths, the daily said.

5 killed as car collides with tanker in AP

Five persons including three women were killed when the car, they were travelling, rammed into a milk tanker in Medak district on Wednesday, police said.

The mishap occurred when a Tata Indica on its way to Hyderabad from Siddipet, rammed into a milk tanker parked on the Rajiv Rahdari Road on the outskirts of Mulug mandal headquarters in Medak at around 12.30pm today.

While four passengers of the car died on the spot, one succumbed on way to hospital.

Union Cabinet to discuss Telangana bill today

The Union Cabinet will discuss the Group of Ministers’ (GoM) report on Telangana and the draft bill on the creation of the new state on Thursday.

After an hour-long meeting yesterday, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that the Cabinet will take up the GoM recommendations on Telangana on Thursday.

According to the GoM proposal, Andhra Pradesh will be bifurcated equally with each state having 21 Lok Sabha seats each, 147 seats each in the Assembly and 45 seats in the Legislative Council.

No service tax amnesty offer for next 20 years: Chidambaram

Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said the government may not be able to announce amnesty programmes such as the Service Tax Voluntary Compliance Encouragement Scheme (VCES) for the next 20 years due to various factors, including curbs imposed by the Supreme Court.

Addressing an interactive session here with traders and senior Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax officials, the Finance Minister also said, “So far the government has received 9,000 declarations under the VCES, out of which only 107 have been rejected.”

Man detained on suspicion of smuggling, later let off

A man was today detained at the N S C Bose International Airport on the suspicion of gold smuggling but was later let off, Customs sources said.

Customs officials posted at the airport got suspicious when they saw 29-year-old Shiddharth Modi coming from Bangok wearing a heavy bangle in his wrist, the sources said.

They detained him and found that the bangle weight around half-a-kg of gold worth around Rs 15 lakh, sources said.

Police intercepts Sikhs for three hours to move to Chandigarh

Syrian chemical weapons removal programme on track: official

The head of the joint United Nations and Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons team charged with eliminating chemical weapons in Syria said Wednesday that despite obstacles, the programme to remove and destroy chemical agents at sea was on track.

Sigrid Kaag, chief of the mission, said the weapons would be broken down into various chemical agents and put aboard a ship in the Syrian Mediterranean port of Latakia, before being taken to another as yet unidentified port to be “transloaded” onto, most likely, a US naval ship for disposal.
