President Pranab Mukherjee will visit West Bengal from December 6 to 8.

On December 6, he will attend the concluding ceremony of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and a felicitation function organized by the Nayaprajanma and Suri Sabujer Abhijan at Suri, Birbhum.

He will also inaugurate the Youth Science Congress organized by the M.S. Swaminathan Foundation at Visva Bharati, Shantiniketan.

French tourist booked for allegedly sexually abusing children

Police have registered a case against a French tourist for allegedly sexually abusing a group of children in Odisha’s beach town of Puri, an official said Thursday.

Middle-aged Mathew Furic allegedly indulged in paedophilia with a group of boys on a secluded area of the beach at Puri, about 56 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, a number of times between Nov 23 and 26.

The alleged incident came to light after James Foster Gorman, an American tourist, lodged a complaint with the local police Nov 2 and said he saw Furic perform oral sex with the children.

Modi ‘gaffe’ on Article 370 stirs hornet’s nest

Cricket Australia has apologised for tweeting an image of England spinner Monty Panesar with four bearded men wearing turbans.

CA posted the picture, taken from Instagram, on its official Twitter account late on Thursday morning, day one of the second Ashes Test in Adelaide.

The pictures also had a caption reading: Will the real Monty Panesar please stand up.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the men were dressed in bright purple, red, green and yellow clothes.

The four depicted children’s TV characters the Teletubbies and originated from here.

China Mobile has reportedly signed a deal with Apple to offer iPhone on its network, a move that would give the tech giant a big push in the world’s largest mobile market.

According to AllThingsD, the rollout of Apple’s flagship product on China Mobile is expected to start this month by December 18.

Researchers have designed a new GER mood-sweater that will help the wearer express what he or she is feeling at that very moment without saying anything.

According to the Guardian, the sweater, developed by design lab Sensoree, uses Galvanic Skin Response to exploit the conductance of human skin changes in response to stimuli.

Sensoree ‘s high-tech garments consist of a funnel-shaped LED collar in a range of colours, like green for “tranquil – Zen” and yellow for “nirvana – ecstatic, blissful”.

Sleep disturbances linked to poor quality of life in obese

A new research has showed that poor sleep quality is strongly associated with mood disturbance and lower quality of life among people with extreme obesity.

Results show that 74.8 percent of participants were poor sleepers, and their mean self-reported sleep duration was only six hours and 20 minutes.

Fifty-two percent of study subjects were anxious, and 43 percent were depressed. After controlling for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness were significantly associated with mood disturbance and quality of life impairment.

According to Asthma Australia report on the study, about 33 percent of dads suffering from uncontrolled asthma avoid running around with their kids.

More than 1000 people with poor asthma control took part in the study.

India expanding nuclear weapon facility: US think-tank claims

A US-based think-tank has claimed that India is expanding its ability to produce highly enriched uranium for military purposes, including more powerful nuclear weapons, citing satellite imagery of an under construction gas centrifuge facility near Mysore.

In their latest report, David Albright and Serena Kelleher-Vergantini of the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) said that India appeared to be finishing construction of what appears to be a second gas centrifuge facility at the Rare Materials Plant (RMP) near Mysore in Karnataka.

Salman Khan hit-and-run case: Mumbai court orders fresh trial

A Mumbai court on Thursday ordered a fresh trial of the 2002 hit-and-run case involving Bollywood actor Salman Khan.

After Salman had requested the court that the earlier evidence presented in the case be disregarded, the The court said all evidence and witnesses will be re-examined when the hearing of the case begins from December 24.

Earlier, a court had ordered that Khan be tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which attracts ten years of imprisonment. The actor had pleaded not guilty in court.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry ruled that the former premier misused his powers while allocating development funds to the people of “his liking”.

Ashraf-led Pakistan People’s Party government had approved Rs 52 billion uplift schemes during its last days.

Sensex regains 21,000 mark, soars 439 pts in early trade

The benchmark BSE Sensex today regained psychological 21,000 level by surging over 439 points in the opening trade on heavy fund inflows amidst exit polls forecasting good show by the BJP in state assembly elections.

The 30-share index, which had lost 189.30 points in the previous two sessions, rebounded by 439.55 points, or 2.12 per cent, to trade above 21,000 level at 21,148.26.

All the sectoral indices, led by banking, capital goods and realty, were trading in positive zone with gains up to 4.02 per cent.

Sensex up over 400 points; reclaims 21K-level as exit polls predict BJP win

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex soared to over 400 points in early morning trade on Thursday, and regained the 21,000 level in the wake of several exit polls predicting a Bharatiya Janata Party win in four of the five states that recently held assembly elections.

The states that went to polls were Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Rajasthan. Polls were held between November 11 and December 4. The counting of votes will take place on December 8.

Tehelka case: Tejpal insists it was a ‘consensual act’

Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal, accused of sexual assaulting a woman journalist, is sticking to his version that whatever happened between the two was a “consensual act”, a police officer said today.

High multiple births due to fertility treatments: Study

More than a third of twin births and more than three-quarters of triplets or higher-order births in the US are the result of assisted reproductive technologies, a new finding says.

The researchers from Brown University gathered data on multiple births from 1962 to 1966 before any medical fertility treatments were available and from 1971 through 2011, when data on in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures were available.
