KCR expresses reservations about draft Telangana bill

Reacting to Union Cabinet’s go-ahead for creation of Telangana with ten districts, TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao tonight said it was no time for celebration and expressed regret over certain provisions of the draft Andhra Pradesh reorganisation bill.

“It is unfortunate that law and order in GHMC has been handed over to Governor who will have two advisers, though Telangana with 10 districts is given,” he said in a release.

The decision to continue the existing rules for admission to technical and higher education would be painful to Telangana supporters, he said.

TMC writes to Ansari for separate seat for Kunal in House

The Trinamool Congress has requested vice-president and Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari for separate seating arrangement for suspended party MP Kunal Ghosh, now under arrest in connection with the Saradha scam.

“The Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party has written to the Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari that Ghosh has been suspended from the party. The chairman was also requested to reallocate his seat in the House, away from the group of TMC members,” a party MP told PTI.

Consensus key for introducing Communal Violence Bill: Mayawati

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo Mayawati said it is important to ensure a political consensus before introducing the Communal Violence Bill in both houses of the parliament.

“They (government) are trying to bring legislation, but before that, they should ensure there is consensus, and after that, they should take a decision and introduce the bill in both houses of Parliament,” she said.

Samajwadi party leader Naresh Agarwal said Communal Violence Bill will curb state rights, and therefore, many states have been opposing it.

VHP opposes Communal Violence Bill

Rubbishing the proposed Communal Violence Bill as “complete mockery of natural justice” and an instance of “religious discrimination against Hindus”, VHP today threatened to launch a nation-wide agitation if the Centre went ahead with the controversial legislation.

“The basic principle of law is that it should be applicable to all. But the proposed bill only targets Hindus while remaining silent on acts of violence by Muslims against the majority community or other minority communities,” Vishwa Hindu Parishad International Working President Pravin Togadia said here in a statement.

Will scrap Article 370 if voted to power in 2014: BJP

Claiming that there are many shortcomings in Article 370, BJP today said it will scrap the Article if it comes to power at the Centre after the Lok Sabha elections next year.

“Article 370 of the Constitution meant for Jammu and Kashmir has many shortcomings and BJP is strongly opposed to it,” National Spokesman of BJP Vijay Sonkar Shastri said here.

“If BJP comes to power at the Centre after the Lok Sabha elections, Article 370 would be scrapped,” Shastri said, adding that the laws of the land are not applicable in Kashmir and this is wrong.

Shocked to hear that an FIR was lodged in Lucknow against her for allegedly hurting religious sentiments in a tweet last month, controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen today said she had only spoken the truth.

“I do not know what wrong have I done with those tweets. I only spoke the truth and once again they are after me,” Taslima told PTI from New Delhi.

Two days after Mumbai Police attached his properties, Jignesh Shah, director of the beleaguered National Spot Exchange Ltd, today told investigators that he was making “relentless” efforts to recover money from defaulters.

Dismissing the suggestion that India was insisting on food security because of the ensuing general elections at home, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma today said New Delhi was only pursing an old proposal and stressed that “no agreement” would be better than a bad one.

The Minister, at a packed press conference, made it clear that New Delhi was not prepared for any compromise on the food security issue, adding the deal at Bali has to be fair and balanced as “it is better to have no agreement than a bad agreement”.

TRS unhappy over certain powers to governor

Welcoming the union cabinet’s approval to the draft bill for creation of Telangana state, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) however expressed its reservations over the reported decision to entrust the power of maintaining law and order with the governor.

TRS legislator K. Tarakarama Rao said while they were happy that the cabinet decided to carve out Telangana state comprising 10 districts, they had reservations about some provisions of the draft bill.

He said the party politburo would meet Friday to discuss the latest developments and chalk out its future course of action.

The row over alleged breach of prison rules in a Kozhikode jail took a serious turn tonight with Kerala Home Minister Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan seeking an explanation from the DGP (Prisons) for his comments having legal bearing on a sensational political murder case.

Radhakrishnan expressed “displeasure” over DGP Alexander Jacob’s remarks that the row over prison rules violations appeared to have been made with the intention of influencing the outcome of the case, a spokesman for the Minister said.

US charges Russian diplomats over USD 1.5 mln fraud

The United States has charged 49 current and former Russian diplomats and their wives over a “shameful” USD 1.5 million fraud, accusing them of stealing medical benefits in New York.

The alleged scam took place between 2004 and August 2013 when the suspects were based at the Russian mission to the United Nations, the Russian consulate and the Russian trade mission.

They are accused of lying about their true income to claim the benefits while splashing out tens of thousands of dollars in designer shops such as Tiffany & Co, Jimmy Choo and Prada.

Protesting the union cabinet’s approval to the draft bill for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, government employees of Seemandhra have called for shutdown Friday.

Andhra Pradesh Non-Gazetted Officers’ (APNGOs) Association, which represents government employees in Seemandhra (Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra), called for the shutdown.

APNGOs Association president P. Ashok Babu told reporters that the decision to bifurcate the state was taken for narrow political interests.

No limit for ties with Iraq, says Khamenei

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Thursday that there is no limit for expansion of ties between Iran and Iraq.

Tehran and Baghdad can work together closely in a wide range of areas, and there are no limitations to the development of ties as well as cooperation between the two, Xinhua reported citing Khamenei during a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

He said one of the areas for cooperation would be science.

US does not recognise China air defence zone: White House

The United States does not recognise the recently declared air defence identification zone (ADIZ) by China in the East China Sea, the White House said today adding that such a Chinese move is provocative and dangerous in such a sensitive region.

Commercial vehicles loan stress hit new peak in Q2: India Ratings

India Ratings has said stressed assets in the commercial vehicles (CV) loan books of lenders hit a new high of 3 per cent in September quarter due to the lingering slowdown.

The agency cautioned that the asset quality stress will continue at least for the next two quarters.

“Delinquencies of CV loans rose to 3 per cent in the September quarter from 2.4 per cent a year ago,” India Ratings said in a note.
