Allahabad-bound train derails near Lucknow, passengers injured

The Allahabad-bound Haridwar Express on Saturday derailed on the outskirts of the city, leaving some passengers injured.

The last three bogies of the train derailed near Nigoha area at about 3.30 AM when the train was going to Allahabad from Haridwar, Circle officer, Government railway police (GRP), RD Yadav, said.

He said that some passengers received minor injuries in the incident.

Traffic was soon restored on the track.

Obama visits fasting immigration activists

US President Barack Obama Friday visited activists on a hunger strike in the National Mall demanding that comprehensive immigration reform be passed in the country. He said he was proud of them.

Accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, the president went Friday morning from the White House to the white tents near the Capitol where the activists have camped without eating since Nov 12.

Rape case against U’khand bureaucrat: Woman records statement

The 29-year-old woman, who has accused Additional Secretary (Home) Janardan Prasad Joshi for raping and intimidating her on the pretext of giving a job, gave her statement to the state police.

“The woman gave her statement to the team formed to the probe the case last night in Delhi,” IG (law and order) Ram Singh Meena said here today.

The statement was recorded under Section 161 of the CrPC, Meena said.

Delhi braveheart’s family moves SC seeking criminal trial for juvenile

The family of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking fresh trial for the juvenile in a criminal court.

The juvenile, who was said to be the most brutal of the six attackers, was awarded three-year sentence for the rape and murder of ‘Nirbhaya’ by the juvenile justice board (JJB).

The family is completely dissatisfied over the 17-year-old accused getting away with a lighter sentence for such a heinous crime.

Tejpal visits Crime Branch office

Ahead of hearing on his bail petition, Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal today visited the Crime Branch office here and said he was cooperating in the investigation.

Police sources said Tejpal, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman reporter in the magazine, was not quizzed and stayed for 10 minutes.

“We have joined the investigation started by the Crime Branch yesterday. We will join today also,” Tejpal told reporters after coming out of the office.

Gogoi welcomes creation of Upper House in Assam

The decision of the Union Cabinet for creating a Upper House in Assam 66 years after it was abolished was today welcomed by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Thanking UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Law minister Kapil Sibal, Gogoi hoped that the Upper House would provide adequate representation to various communities and groups.

He said in a statement here that he was also hopeful that it would strengthen the composite character of the state and create a plethora of goodwill for the governments, both the Centre and the state.

A woman in the White House? President Barack Obama says that will happen “very soon,” according to remarks released on Friday.

“We have some amazing female [public] servants all across the country and there is no doubt that sometime very soon, we’re going to have a female president,” he said in an interview with broadcaster ABC.

What’s more, “I’m confident that she will do a great job,” he told veteran journalist Barbara Walters.

Hollywood film director wants to make film on Aarushi

A London-based Hollywood film director today approached Dasna Jail authorities seeking a meeting with Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, as he wanted their consent to make a film on Aarushi-Hemraj murder case.

However, prison authorities asked the director to meet the couple after two weeks as per the rules.

“Hollywood film director Clip F Runyard reached Dasna jail to meet dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar to seek their consent to make a film on Aarushi,” said a senior jail official, who did not wish to be named.

Will Tarun Tejpal be arrested? Decision likely by 10

Whether Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal goes to jail or not would be decided by 10 a.m. Saturday, with his interim bail set to end by that hour.

If the Tehelka editor, who faces allegations of sexual assault, fails to secure an anticipatory bail from North Goa District and Sessions Judge Anuja Prabhudessai by 10, police are likely to arrest him immediately.

Tejpal landed in Goa Friday evening after dodging Goa Police for more than 24 hours, after the deadline for him to respond to police summons.

Lashing out at the opposition party, Union Health Minister Gulab Nabi Azad today said BJP is only the face whereas its heart, mind and body is of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Break-in at Mahesh Bank in Hyderabad, 14 kg gold stolen

Unidentified persons today broke into a branch of Mahesh Bank in A S Rao Nagar here and made away with over 14 kg gold kept in the strongroom.

The culprits opened the strongroom using duplicate keys and took away mortgaged gold last night. The break-in came to light this morning.

CCTV camera link inside was cut making police suspect that an insider might be involved.

Thieves steal street pavement worth 7,000 pounds in UK!

In a bizarre robbery, thieves posed as workmen cordoning off an area in UK’s Kent county and stole pavement slabs weighing more than five tonnes.

A 35-year-old man from Chatham, Kent, has been arrested on suspicion of theft and bailed until January 14.

The thieves used stolen roadwork signs to cordon off part of the centre of Rochester, Kent, and lifted 7,000 pounds worth of Yorkstone paving slabs.

Police Officer who arrested innocent Muslim youths rewarded

Mr. K. Ramchandran, Additional DCP (Admin), has been appointed the Chief of Task Force of Central Zone. Mr. Ramchandran was Inspector of Central Zone Task Force in 2007 when he arrested 26 innocent Muslim youths and they were targeted with 3rd degree punishment at a Farm House in the outskirts of Hyderabad alleging them to be involve in conspiracies to start war against the country. 7th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge had acquitted them with full honours.

Implementation of RTE act soon in A.P.

Govt. of Maharashtra has started online admissions to ensure 25% admissions of poor students in reputed educational institutions. On the same lines, Govt. of A.P. will also take suitable steps to implement Right to Education Act very soon. It is observed that poor students find it difficult to get admissions in reputed schools. Pathan slams ton as Baroda eye win

Out-of-favour India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan slammed a counter-attacking 101-ball 104 as Baroda closed in a on win over Madhya Pradesh in a Group B Ranji Trophy match dominated by bowlers, who have already taken 35 wickets in just two days.

Pathan tore apart the MP bowling attack, smashing six fours and five sixes during his 154-minute stay at the crease, even as the others fell cheaply.
