UN chief concerned over pre-poll violence in Bangladesh

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern over the latest wave of violence in Bangladesh ahead of parliamentary elections due in the country in January.

The UN chief “calls on all concerned to respect the rule of law, exercise restraint and to express their views peacefully”, reported Xinhua citing Ban’s spokesperson in a statement Thursday.

The UN chief urged all parties to ensure an environment “conducive to credible and peaceful elections”.

EC notice to Rahul for his ISI-Muzaffarnagar riot victim remarks

The Election Commission today issued a notice to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for his speeches in which he said Pakistan’s ISI was in touch with Muzaffarnagar riot victims and charged BJP with indulging in politics of hatred.

The Commission, after examining Gandhi’s speeches made in Churu, Rajasthan, on October 23 and in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on October 24 and after taking into account the electoral officer’s report, has asked him to explain by Monday why action should not be initiated against him for prima facie violating the model code of conduct.

Patna serial blasts suspect ‘re-arrested’ in Kanpur

Terror suspect Meher Alam, accused of involvement in Sunday’s Patna serial blasts and who escaped from the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur city late Thursday.

While police officials refused to comment on the high profile arrest, sources said he was picked up from the Sapt Kranti Express headed for Delhi.

Bus tragedy: Driver, travel company owner arrested

A day after the tragic mishap in Mahabubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh, in which 45 passengers of a Volvo bus were burnt alive after it caught fire, police today arrested the owner of the bus operator company and its driver.

Owner of Jabbar Travels, Shakeel Jabbar and driver Feroze were arrested from Kothakota in Mahabubnagar district, Wanaparthy DSP Srinivas Reddy told PTI over phone.

The owner and the driver were booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Motor Vehicles Act, he said.
