Mother arrested for killing her girl child

A mother was arrested for strangulating her girl child and throwing her into a manhole in the premises of a hospital in the capital, police said Friday.

The woman was arrested Thursday and admitted that she killed the child because the birth of twin girls three months ago had upset her, police said.

A sanitation employee found the dead infant Tuesday afternoon in a manhole at New Delhi’s Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital.

Two Gujarat policemen die in UP

Two policemen from the Gujarat bomb disposal squad going to Patna for Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s trip were killed in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh Friday, police said.

The team, travelling in a Gujarat police vehicle, was part of a bomb disposal squad from Modi’s home state.

Firozabad Superintendent of Police Rakesh Singh told IANS that the vehicle carrying the policemen was hit by a speeding truck from the rear at Sirsaganj in Firozabad district.

Two policemen died instantly while six others were injured. The dead have been identified as Gairaj Singh and Atmaram.

Pakistan finalising team for Taliban talks

Pakistan is finalising the team which will hold talks with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, a media report said Friday.

The team will consist of government officials, politicians, ulemas, intellectuals and experts on military affairs, Geo News reported citing sources.

According to the report, the Pakistan government has removed obstacles in talks with the Taliban.

During the talks, both parties will observe an unannounced ceasefire, the report added.

UAE bans import of birds from Australia

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has slapped a temporary ban on import of all kinds of tamed, wild and ornamental living birds, their products and offal from Australia due to the appearance of infectious cases of bird flu.

The decision, issued by the UAE’s Minister of Environment and Water Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, followed reports received from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on the appearance of infected cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H7N2).

Accusing Narendra Modi of engaging in “politics of lies”, Union Minister Kapil Sibal today challenged BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate to a debate as he stated that political discourse should move from individuals to issues affecting the country.

And, as BJP quickly responded to Sibal’s challenge, saying Arun Jaitley was ready to debate him, the Union Minister said he would take on Jaitley when he also became a Prime Ministerial candidate.

Pakistan Army trying to derail peace process: Azad

Union Health Minister and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad Friday said that despite all the peace initiatives taken by India with Pakistan, its army was vitiating the environment.

‘Gujarat riots a failure of police and not political leadership’: Gill

Former Punjab DGP K P S Gill on Friday gave a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, saying the 2002 riots were a total failure of the police and not political leadership.

“I have written in my book that it was a total police failure and not failure of police leadership,” he said.

Gill said it was Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who called him there when the riots were taking place.

“His (Modi) intention was to prevent it. When I went there, he did not interfere in my work. And the riots came to an end within three days,” said Gill.

Some NSA spying went too far, says Kerry

US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that, in some cases, the surveillance by the US National Security Agency (NSA) “reached too far inappropriately”.

Kerry said Thursday he would work with President Barack Obama to make sure that this does not happen in the future, reported BBC.

The secretary also defended the NSA’s acts, saying it had prevented terrorists attacks.

Kidnapper of Indian men appears in court

A 27-year-old Indian man, who was arrested in Hong Kong in connection with the kidnapping of three Indian businessmen last month, appeared in a court in China to face the charge.

Karmjit Singh, who lives in Hong Kong, appeared in Fanling Court in the ciy Thursday to face the charge of kidnapping businessman Manmohan Singh Mangat, his banker Satwinder Singh and lawyer Gurinder Singh Gill Oct 25, the South China Morning Post reported Friday.

The three men had arrived here from India on a business trip.

Syrian minister berates UN’s envoy

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi Friday slammed the visiting UN-Arab League joint envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahami, apparently for putting the government and the rebels on a par with each other.

Following Brahimi’s press conference here, in which he said “there are unacceptable practices both by the government and the armed opposition”, al-Zoubi unleashed a barrage of criticism against him, reports Xinhua.

Grenade explosion kills two in Russia

Two persons were killed and two injured in a grenade explosion in a court building in the city of Kurgan in southern Russia, the country’s interior ministry said Friday.

“The grenade detonated at one of the small claims courts,” Xinhua reported citing the ministry’s press service.

Police said 19-year-old Mikhail Vdovin had entered the court in South Urals’ regional capital and detonated the grenade, killing himself and a court marshal.

The police believe that Vdovin had intended to blow up a judge as he was not happy with a court ruling.

US phone tapping ‘cynical’, says Russian PM

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Friday the phone tapping conducted by the US National Security Agency (NSA) was “utterly cynical”.

“When they say it’s a usual practice, everyone understands that the interest in foreign leaders and states exists,” Medvedev said in an interview published on the government’s website, Xinhua reported.

“Special services exist for that. But it is assumed they don’t do it in such a cynical way,” he said.

Medvedev added that he understood foreign leaders’ grievances because “when someone spies on you, it is not very pleasant”.

Germany ready to meet Snowden on US spying

Germany’s Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich Friday said the government is willing to talk with whistleblower Edward Snowden on US spying in Germany including alleged monitoring of the mobile phone of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The minister told reporters that Germany would like to talk with Snowden if he was willing to help shed light on the spying scandal, Xinhua reported.

Germany’s opposition Green Party plans to release a letter by Snowden to Merkel following a lawmaker’s meeting with Snowden in Moscow.

China calls East Turkistan Islamic Movement terror threat

China Friday said the ethnic Uygur separatist organization East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) is the most direct and real threat to the country’s security.

“The ETIM has incited, organised and committed terrorist attacks of various forms in China over the years and spread the ideas of violence and terrorism,” Xinhua quoted Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying as saying at a routine press briefing.

“It has been the most direct and real threat to our security, and has damaged the security of other countries and regions,” she added.

Indian woman stabbed to death by husband in Dubai

An Indian woman in Dubai was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband outside a school.

Sonia, who hailed from the south Indian state of Kerala, was stabbed just outside the gate of the New Indian Model School (NIMS) in Al Garhoud area of the city between 10.15 a.m. and 11a.m. Thursday, yards from where pupils were taking lessons, local media reported Friday.

The victim worked in the school as an attendant.

Her husband Ranjit reportedly stabbed his wife first and then tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Chinese man who killed babies sentenced to death

A man in China’s Guangdong province was Thursday awarded death sentence for killing two babies, including a two-month-old, under the influence of drugs.

Huang Mingxing, 36, s villager of Zhongshan city, was convicted of hacking to death two baby girls — one of whom was a-year-old and another two-months-old — of two families in his village, reported Xinhua citing the intermediate people’s court in a verdict.

Odisha teacher dies after being set on fire

A woman teacher in Odisha’s Rayagada district died Friday, four days after she was set ablaze by an unidentified assailant for allegedly refusing to withdraw a sexual assault complaint.

“She succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh where she was undergoing treatment. Her condition was critical,” district Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandit told IANS.

China’s manufacturing growth hits 18-month high

China’s purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector rose to 51.4 percent in October, hitting a new high since May 2012, the official statistical agency said Friday.

The figure was 0.3 percentage points higher than September, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), reports Xinhua.

China’s manufacturing PMI increased for four consecutive months, showing a steady upward trend in manufacturing. A figure above 50 percent signals expansion.
