MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli nominated for ICC People`s Choice award

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and star batsman Virat Kohli were on Saturday nominated for the International Cricket Council`s People`s Choice Award, the winner of which will be declared on December 13 during the governing body`s 10th annual awards.

“The quintet of players nominated for the award are Australia`s Michael Clarke, England`s Alastair Cook, India`s duo of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, and South Africa`s AB de Villiers,” the ICC said in a statement.

Webber equals Aussie pole record in Abu Dhabi

Australia Mark Webber grabbed the 13th pole position of his career when he clocked the fastest lap in a tense qualifying session as Red Bull swept the front row of the grid for Sunday`s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The 37-year-old, who retires from Formula One at the end of the season, recorded 1min 39.957 sec to edge out newly-crowned quadruple world champion team-mate German Sebastian Vettel.

10 killed, 8 injured as train runs over passengers in AP

At least ten people are feared to have died and eight others injured as a train ran over them at Gotlam station, 10 km away from Vizianagaram, in eastern Andhra Pradesh.

Senior railways officers quashed rumours of a train collision and said that ten were feared dead in the accident.

The incident took place at around 6.50pm when rumours spread about a fire in Elappi (Kerala)-Dhanbad Express train, triggering panic among its passengers, a spokesman of East Coast railway told.

Instagram launches ads with Michael Kors’ first sponsored post

Instagram has officially rolled out ads on its platform after a week-long preview of its approach to sponsored posts with an ad from fashion designer Michael Kors that instantly gained over 36,000 likes.

Kors’ ad has started to appear in users’ timeline, despite their pre-fed settings, but users can choose whether or not to follow the particular brand.

According to The Verge, the photo-sharing site is allow encouraging users to provide feedback on any sponsored content they do not like or do not want to see in their timeline.

Reindeers’ eyes change colour over course of seasons

Scientists have discovered that reindeer eyes changes colour from gold to blue over the course of the year.

The study revealed that the reindeer is uniquely adapted to Arctic winters.

The study found that like many other mammals, during the bright summers reindeers’ eyes reflect back most light through the retina – so they seem to be gold coloured.

The research showed that a kind of enhanced night vision kicks in through winter, however, when a layer of tissue behind the retina becomes less reflective and seems to be blue coloured, the Independent reported.

Ten persons run over by train near Vizianagaram

Ten people were run over and an equal number injured by a speeding train near Vizianagaram town this evening, a railway official said.

According to East Coast railway spokesperson, some of the passengers of Bokaro Express (Alleppy to Dhanbad), proceeding to Bokaro Steel city, pulled the chain at the railway yard at Gotlam station near Vizianagaram town when they heard a rumour that a compartment of the train was on fire and jumped out on the tracks at around 6.50pm.

NASA to map Greenland ice sheet summer melt

For the first time, the Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor, or LVIS, is set to fly aboard NASA’s new C-130 aircraft to map Greenland’s ice sheet and surrounding Arctic sea ice following a summer’s melt.

NASA’s C-130 research aircraft flew from the Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Va., to Greenland on Wednesday where they are going to conduct survey flights to collect information that will improve understanding of seasonal melt and provide baseline measurements for future satellite missions.

Flights are scheduled to continue through November 16.

Fire in Delhi garment factory kills at least six

At least six people have been reported dead after a fire broke out in a garment factory in Delhi.

Around 10 people suffered burn injuries and have been rushed to nearby hospital.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

A new study suggests that mammal body size decreased significantly during at least two ancient global warming events.

The new finding suggests that a similar outcome is possible in response to human-caused climate change, according to a University of Michigan paleontologist and his colleagues.

Researchers have known for years that mammals such as primates and the groups that include horses and deer became much smaller during a period of warming, called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), about 55 million years ago.

AIIMS researchers prove yoga`s benefits for COPD patients

COPD patients can improve their lung function by practicing yoga, a new research led by Indian origin scientist has revealed.

The study by researchers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders found that lung function, shortness of breath, and inflammation all showed significant improvement after patients completed 12 weeks of training.

‘Intensive’ exercise may benefit heart failure patients

Some doctors caution people with heart failure against pushing themselves too hard physically. But a new analysis of past studies suggests heart patients may actually benefit more from relatively intensive exercise.

Researchers found people with heart failure had a 23-percent improvement in heart function after taking part in relatively high-intensity exercise programs. That compared to a 7-percent improvement among those in low-intensity programs.

Diabetic women under 60 at higher risk of heart disease

Researchers including an Indian origin scientist has found that young and middle-aged women suffering from type 2 diabetes are at increased greater risk of developing coronary artery disease than previously believed.

Lead study author Rita Rastogi Kalyani, M.D., M.H.S., endocrinologist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said that their findings suggest that we need to work harder to prevent heart disease in women under 60 who have diabetes.

She said that this study tells us that women of any age who have diabetes are at a high risk for coronary artery disease.

Flaxseed may reduce blood pressure, early findings show

Eating a bit of flaxseed each day might help lower high blood pressure, a new study suggests.

Researchers said it’s too early to swap out blood pressure medication for the fiber-filled seeds just yet. But if future studies confirm the new results, flax might be a cheap way to treat high blood pressure, they added.

Flaxseed is well known as a plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and lignans, a type of antioxidants.

Ex-MLA’s daughter-in-law found hanging

A former Congress MLA’s daughter-in-law was found hanging under mysterious circumstances at a house in Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla area, police said Saturday.

Victim’s family alleged that their daughter was killed for dowry. Her in-laws, however, claimed that she had committed suicide.

Rekha, 27, was found hanging inside her in-law’s house Saturday morning.

Rekha’s father Ashok Chaudhary, in his complaint, said in December 2012, he had organised her daughter’s marriage with the son of former MLA Sadiram.

PM postpones visit to Odisha, Andhra

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has postponed his visit to cyclone-hit Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, scheduled for Saturday, due to “scheduling issues”.

The prime minister was to undertake an aerial survey of the two states, hit by cyclone Phailin Oct 12.

“The visit has been postponed due to scheduling issues,” PMO sources told IANS.

The prime minister was expected to make some announcement about financial aid.

Diwali: Delhi hospitals brace up to tackle emergencies

Delhi government has directed the state-run hospitals to put in place required arrangements to deal with burn victims during the Diwali celebrations in the city.

Keeping in view the apprehensions of children and adults suffering burn injuries while bursting crackers, the hospitals
have been asked to keep a few beds reserved for such cases, besides deploying the specialists.

The health department has also instructed the hospitals to keep stock of the required medicines and other equipments
for instant healing and stitching.
