Contract employees climb mobile tower, demand permanent job

Four contractual employees of the Uttarakhand electricity department, who have climbed a mobile tower and have been threatening to jump off if their demand for regularisation of their service was not met, today refused to come down despite efforts by authorities.

Kanchan Joshi, Randhir Pundeer, Darshan Bhandari and Kosturba Nand Pandey did not yield to the efforts of the authorities for the second day today, while their supporters joined the protest at the foot of the tower, official sources said.

Woman charred to death after firecracker guts hut

A middle-aged woman was charred to death after a firecracker fell on the thatched roof of her hut gutting it completely in Erramanzil here in early hours today, police said.

The mishap occurred at around 1.30am today, when K Nagamani (50) was fast asleep and a firecracker fell on the hut and engulfed it in flames within minutes,they said.

Though locals made efforts to put off the blaze pouring water, Nagamani could not be saved, police said, adding, that the woman’s body was later found charred inside.

TDP founder NTR’s statue torched in AP village

A statue of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder and actor late N T Rama Rao was found burnt at Pulladi Gunta village, 10 km from here, today morning.

Smoke had blackened the statue and heat had peeled off chunks of cement, when it was found by villagers.

Angry TDP cadres blocked Guntur-Prathipadu Road and shouted slogans against the Congress, while TDP district secretary M Subba Rao condemned the outrage and vowed to continue agitating until those responsible are nabbed and a new statue is installed by the government.

Fire department gets over 70 calls on peak Diwali hours

Fire fighters in the national capital got over 70 calls tonight about fire-related incidents from across the city on Diwali, but almost all of them were related to minor incidents.

“We have received 75 calls between 6 PM to 10 PM. In the 22 hours from last midnight, fire fighters have answered to around 132 calls reporting fire-related incidents,” said a fire official.

There were just 24 calls between 6 PM and 8 PM this year which is said to be the peak hour for people bursting crackers.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to review ties with US at special cabinet meeting

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will hold a special cabinet meeting tomorrow to review the entire gamut of bilateral ties with the US in the wake of the CIA drone strike that killed warlord Hakimullah Mehsud.

“Minister of Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan will give a briefing on internal security tomorrow at the cabinet meeting,” a highly-placed source in the Prime Minister’s Office told PTI.

Party MLAs booked in UP riots case to target BJP: Rajnath

BJP President Rajnath Singh today alleged that party MLAs Sangeet Som and Suresh Rana have been booked in connection with last month Muzaffarnagar riots to target the party.

The Ghaziabad MP told reporters here that the riots in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas were a result of Uttar Pradesh government’s “failure to prevent the violence”.

Both Som and Rana have been arrested for their alleged role in fanning the communal violence which left 62 persons dead and rendered 40,000 homeless. Som is also accused of uploading a video which reportedly sparked the tension.

Mortar hits near Damascus citadel: monitor

A mortar round hit near the ancient citadel in the heart of the Syrian capital today, while fierce clashes raged in several Damascus neighbourhoods, a monitoring group said.

“A mortar landed near the Damascus citadel wounding several people, while another fell near the Dweila district (in the southeast), setting fire to a textile plant,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

State news agency SANA confirmed the reports, blaming “terrorists” for a shell that “caused a textile factory to burn down completely.”

Indian university to tie-up with Israeli institutes

With the Israeli government opening its doors to attract Asian talent for its research institutes, an Indian university has opened a centre here to facilitate cooperation in wide ranging areas for sustained exchange of expertise.

Kerala-based minority institution, Karunya University, has signed multiple Memorandum of Understandings with several leading Israeli academic institutions.

Gunmen kill two Egyptian police ahead of Morsi trial

Gunmen killed two Egyptian policemen near Ismailia on the west bank of the Suez Canal, security sources said, hours before ousted president Mohamed Morsi was to go on trial.

A third policeman was wounded when the armed men fired automatic weapons from their car toward the officers’ checkpoint, the sources said yesterday.

Medical sources confirmed the toll.

Since the army deposed and arrested Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, on July 3, near daily attacks have claimed dozens of lives among police and soldiers across the country.

Violence and low turnout mar Kosovo election

Outbreaks of violence and a low turnout marred key local elections in Kosovo today, the first in which ethnic Serbs have been encouraged to vote since the territory proclaimed independence in 2008.

One woman was seriously injured when masked extremists stormed a polling station, attacking voters and election commissioners and destroying ballot boxes in the ethnically divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica, Belgrade-backed Serb mayoral candidate Krstimir Pantic told reporters.

Solar eclipse sweeps Africa, Europe and US

Africans were treated today to a spectacular solar eclipse that swept across the continent, while sky-gazers in the United States and Europe also glimpsed the rare phenomenon.

A total eclipse could be seen over parts of Africa and one of the best views was in northern Kenya’s Sibiloi national park, where a few hundred tourists gathered on the edge of the desert lake Turkana.

Alongside the tourists were colourfully dressed Kenyans from the Turkana, Rendile and Dasanach tribes, many draped in beads, who cheered as the sky darkened.

Tropical Storm Sonia moving toward Mexican coast

Officials on Mexico’s storm-struck Pacific coast braced today for the arrival of fast-moving Tropical Storm Sonia, which was projected to hit the mainland by early tomorrow.

The US National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sonia grew from a tropical depression today and by afternoon was centered about 250 kilometres south of the tip of the Baja California and 500 kilometres south-southwest of Culicacan.

Maximum sustained winds had risen to 45 mph (75 kph) and it was heading north-northeast at 13 mph (20 kph).

No clemency for Snowden, top US lawmakers say

Senior American lawmakers said today that intelligence leaker Edward Snowden should not be given clemency by the United States following his disclosures of widespread government surveillance.

The heads of the Senate and House intelligence committees spoke just days after a German lawmaker published a letter from the fugitive and said Snowden was ready to testify to Congress to shed light on “possibly serious offenses.”

But Senator Dianne Feinstein, in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation” news show, said he had missed his chance to do so.

Berlusconi voters like his daughter for Italian PM

Silvio Berlusconi’s daughter Marina, touted as his possible political successor, was given a boost in a poll published today showing that the flamboyant ex-premier’s supporters think she is prime minister material.

Some 65 per cent of voters for Berlusconi’s People of Freedom (PDL) party think 47-year-old Marina Berlusconi “would be suitable for the office of prime minister”, according to the SWG institute poll published in the Corriere della Sera daily.

The sentiment was shared by 57 per cent of the centre-right.

France says ‘terrorists’ behind murder of journalists in Mali

Paris today blamed terrorist groups for the “odious” and “cold-blooded” murder of two radio journalists in northern Mali, and said French troops would boost security in the restive zone.

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Radio France Internationale (RFI) journalist Ghislaine Dupont and sound technician Claude Verlon were shot dead after being abducted by armed men on Saturday.

“They were killed in cold blood, one took two bullets and the other three,” he said after crisis talks led by President Francois Hollande on the murders in the northeastern town of Kidal.

Israeli drone crashes inside Gaza Strip

The Israeli military says an unmanned surveillance aircraft has crashed in the Gaza Strip after experiencing a technical malfunction.

The military said it was investigating what caused the Skylark drone to go down on today.

Israel uses drones to gather intelligence on militant activity in Gaza. The territory is governed by the Hamas militant group, and several other armed groups also operate there.

World War II bomb defused in Germany

Bomb experts defused a 1,800-kg bomb from World War II Sunday in the western German city of Dortmund after officials evacuated 20,000 residents.

The specialists finished defusing the bomb in Dortmund’s Hombruch district around 4:45 p.m. in an operation that lasted about five hours.

The only snag in the operation occurred around 3 p.m. when two wheelchair-bound people called police to say they had been unable to leave their residence and were still in the cordoned-off area.

Teacher cannot be forced to fold hands in school prayers: HC

The Bombay High Court has held that a teacher cannot be forced to fold his hands while standing in the school prayers or hold his hand in the front while taking oath of the preamble of the Constitution.

“Forcing a teacher to do so will be a violation of the fundamental rights conferred on him under the Constitution,” observed a bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Revethi Mohiti-Dhere on October 29 while hearing a petition filed by a teacher professing Buddhist faith.

Coastal districts of A.P. should be protected from Christianity

Mr. Mohammed Amer Khan, President of the committee to protect faith told that a survey was made about the coastal districts of A.P., namely East Godavari, West Godavari and Visakhapatnam in which it was found that most of the villages are very rapidly being influenced by Christian missionaries. They are tempting the innocent villages by extending the facilities of health care, education, loan and other schemes. Most of the villagers, who are not well versed with Islamic teachings, are getting attracted towards Christianity.

State Syllabus of Asif Jahi period applauded

The Syllabus of the students during Asif Jahi period was exemplary which included Urdu, Telugu and English. After the formation of A.P. State, the syllabus of Telangana was changed.
