Nano comeback possible, says Ratan Tata

Tata Motors is incorporating some changes in the Nano for a relaunch and its former chairman Ratan Tata thinks the small car can still take off in the home market.

“A re-launched Nano with some of the differences that we’re trying to incorporate, yes I do,” said Tata in an interview on CNBC’s Managing Asia programme.

Tata said the company has plans to launch the Nano outside of the Indian market, but did not give a timeframe for that.

IT firms manipulate social media for poll campaign: Cobrapost

Investigative website Cobrapost today alleged that IT companies are misusing social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to artificially boost politicians popularity and malign their rivals, with many firms claiming to be working for BJP and Narendra Modi.

The sting, Operation Blue Virus, claims to have exposed about two dozen little known IT firms across the country, which in the garb of providing reputation management services on social media, also offer fake fan following and posting defamatory content using IP addresses of others by hacking into them.

Sensex gains 257 points; bank, capital goods stocks gain

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets ended Friday’s trade 257 points or 1.25 percent up ahead of the national growth data release coupled with healthy buying across major bluechip firms.

Good buying was observed in all sectoral indices, especially in bank, capital goods, metal, oil and gas and public sector undertakings (PSUs) sectors.

The 30-scrip S&P Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 20,558.93 points, closed at 20,791.93 points, up 257.02 points or 1.25 percent from its previous day’s close at 20,534.91 points.

BJP youth wing protests against Tejpal in Goa

Activists of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha gathered at the Dabolim Airport in Panaji on Friday to protest against Tarun Tejpal, the founder editor of the Tehelka magazine and newspaper for his role in a sexual harassment case.

Shouting anti-Tejpal slogans and waving placards that said “Welcome to Panjim Tarun Tejpal and the courts” the BYM activists demanded that he be arrested as soon as he lands in the state, whioch is a short while from now.

Nawaz Sharif to meet Karzai on Saturday to revive Taliban peace talks

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will meet Afghanistani President Hamid Karzai on Saturday to revive the stalled peace process with the Taliban.

The visit comes a week after Sharif met a peace delegation from the Afghan High Peace Council, which is tasked with opening negotiations with Taliban insurgents, Dawn News reports.

Karzai has, meanwhile, delayed signing a security pact with Washington that could allow a handful of U.S. troops to stay back post-2014 for training and counter-terror purposes.

The Committee headed by Justice R M Lodha submitted the report on Thursday after recording the statement of Justice Ganguly, who is now heading the West Bengal Human Rights Commission, an apex court official said on Friday.

Don’t politicise rape, says woman journalist

A former Tehelka woman journalist who has accused founder-editor Tarun Tejpal of rape Friday urged political parties to refrain from politicizing the issue.

“I call upon our political parties to resist the temptation to turn a very important discussion about gender, power and violence into a conversation about themselves,” she said in a statement here.

She said she was “deeply concerned” and “very disturbed” about suggestions that her complaint against Tejpal was a part of “a pre-election political conspiracy”.

Security up for Modi’s Jammu rally

Elaborate steps are being taken to provide tight security to BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi when he reaches here to address a rally Sunday, officials said.

A Gujarat Police team has reached the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Tejpal not cooperative, dodging investigators: Goa Police

Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has been non-cooperative and has been avoiding the police even though his custodial interrogation was required to investigate the sexual assault case against him, Goa Police said in their written “say” to the Panaji district and sessions court Friday.

The police “say” was filed in response to an anticipatory bail application by Tejpal’s counsel Geeta Luthra earlier in the morning.

Astrophysicists have snapped and mapped 44 million stars in one of the most comprehensive and accurate surveys ever undertaken.

This finding provides two important breakthroughs. First, it gives far more accurate measurements of the brightness of each individual star than had ever previously been possible.

Second, by comparing two photographs of each star taken up to 60 years apart, it becomes easy to identify stars whose brightness has slowly changed, The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series reports.

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets surged 232.92 points or 1.13 percent in the pre-noon session Friday.

Raheel Sharif takes over Pakistan Army command

General Raheel Sharif formally assumed the command of the Pakistan Army Friday, two days after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif picked him to lead it.

Gen. Raheel succeeds Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who headed the army for six years, reports Xinhua.

Gen. Kayani handed over the command to the new chief at a largely-attended ceremony at the army’s hockey ground at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

The outgoing army chief handed the “Change of Command baton” over to Gen. Raheel Sharif, who became the country’s 15th army chief.

3 suspected militants killed in US drone attack in North Waziristan

Three suspected militants have been reportedly killed and several others injured during a US drone strike on a compound in Angar Kalli area in North Waziristan.

Intelligence officials and local sources said that the suspects were killed when two missiles were fired by a US drone on the compound.

According to Dawn, the identity of the militants could not be ascertained as the drone strike was carried out at midnight.

Sources revealed that the drones had been hovering over the area for hours.

SC panel names judge accused of sexual harassment

A three-member panel that probed the charge of sexual harassment of a young lawyer by a Supreme Court judge has given its report, identifying the judge as A.K. Ganguly, court sources said Friday.

The report was submitted Thursday after the committee of three judges met six times. It is the first the alleged perpetrator has been named.

The report, submitted to Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, also carries the statements of the victim, a young lawyer who had interned in the Supreme Court, and that of the now retired Justice Ganguly, the sources said.

Don’t make Aadhaar card compulsory: CPI(M)

The CPI(M) has asked the Centre to withdraw its decision to make Aadhaar cards compulsory for providing various benefits like cooking gas subsidy to people.

A resolution adopted by the state plenum of the CPI(M) here yesterday alleged that Aadhaar had been made compulsory by the Centre without having the backing of any parliamentary legislation and in disregard to the repeated rulings of the Supreme Court on the issue.

SC seeks response from Centre, Press Council on ways to regulate TV content

The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the central government and the Press Council of India on a plea for setting up an independent mechanism to regulate the content of television channels.

Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi sent notices to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Law and Justice Ministry to respond to the PIL that alleges that misleading and superstitious contents are being broadcast by channels, and that there is a need for a regulatory body to oversee it.
