‘Corrupt will now be afraid’: BJP on Masood’s sentence

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday welcomed the arrest of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rasheed Masood after he was sentenced to four years in prison in connection with the MBBS seat scam, and said the corrupt will now be afraid.

“The corrupt will now be afraid. The BJP had kept up the pressure. Now, the law is catching up with them,” said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain.

Masood has become the first legislator to be disqualified after a Delhi court sentenced him to four years in jail in connection with the MBBS seat scam.

Bihar court issues warrant against Raj Thackray

A local court issued body warrant today against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena(MNS) chief Raj Thackeray to be present before it before November 12 in connection with a complaint case against him for allegedly calling people from Bihar rapists.

Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) S P Singh issued the warrant against Thackeray and directed Mumbai Police Commissioner to produce MNS chief in the court before November 12.

Delhi Police on Tuesday evening took Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rasheed Masood to the Tihar Jail here hours after he was convicted on corruption charges in connection with the MBBS scam.

Masood has become the first legislator to be disqualified after a Delhi court sentenced him to four years in jail in connection with the MBBS seat scam.

The 66-year-old Congress leader had been convicted of cheating, forgery and corruption in an MBBS seat scam.

I never called Singh a ‘village woman’: Nawaz Sharif

In an attempt to end a controversy over his purported remarks about his Indian counterpart, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that he never called Manmohan Singh a “village woman”.

A new study has found that people who exercised more than four hours per week in their leisure time had a 19 percent lower risk of high blood pressure than people who didn’t exercise much.

Physical activity in your leisure time could help keep your blood pressure at a healthy level, the research suggests.

Researchers pooled results from 13 studies on the effects of physical activity on blood pressure.

The studies involved 136,846 people in the United States, Europe or East Asia who initially had healthy blood pressure.

Congress MP Rasheed Masood jailed for four years

Rajya Sabha member Rasheed Masood of the Congress was Tuesday sentenced to four years in jail for fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates from across the country to MBBS seats in 1990-91, making him the first to stand disqualified as a lawmaker.

Special CBI Court Judge J.P.S. Malik held Masood guilty on charges of corruption and other offences.

Masood, 67, was convicted of fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates from across the country to the MBBS seats allotted to Tripura medical colleges from the central pool.

Sudarshan Reddy rules out “water wars” after T-formation

Major Irrigation Minister P Sudharshan Reddy dismissed the claims of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on “water wars” between Telangana and Seemandhra after the division of Andhra Pradesh.

Talking to reporters here, Sudarshan Reddy said that the predictions of “water wars” were not based on facts. He said that there were set procedures and regulatory bodies to resolve the water sharing disputes between the two States. The Supreme Court today issued contempt notice to former Army Chief Gen V K Singh, saying his remarks against its order on his age row prima facie amounts to “scandalising” and undermining the authority of the court.

The apex court directed the former Army Chief to file his response by October 23 after taking suo moto cognizance of a news report quoting him on why the apex court had not decided his age on the basis of matriculation certificate if such document is relied upon to decide the age of a rape victim.

Avahan AIDS project prevented over 6 lakh HIV infections: Study

Around 600,000 people in India may have been saved from becoming infected with HIV over ten years with the help of a programme funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, according to a study.

In an evaluation of the 2003-launched AIDS project Avahan, researchers from the School of Public Health at Imperial College, London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine estimated that Avahan prevented more than half of the infections that would have occurred without its intervention.

Terrorism boomeranged on Pakistan, says US official

A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked Pakistan to shun terrorism to make peace with India, a top US defence official suggested that over time Islamabad “flirted” with terrorism as state policy and now it has boomeranged on it. Infertile woman gives birth after experimental ovary surgery

A new technique that coaxes an infertile woman’s ovaries into producing eggs again has resulted in the birth of a baby in Japan, international scientists said today.

A second woman has also become pregnant using the same method, according to the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a peer-reviewed US journal.

Researchers caution that the technique is still in its early stages, but could offer hope for young women whose ovaries are no longer producing eggs.
