Cong taunts Modi over silence on Lalu’s conviction

Congress today taunted Narendra Modi over his “silence” on the conviction of RJD chief Lalu Prasad in fodder scam case, claiming that the Gujarat Chief Minister is “not happy” since the order “suits” Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

“Despite his four tweets of yesterday, Narendra Modi’s silence on Lalu Yadav’s conviction shows he isn’t happy because it suits Nitish Kumar,” party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed commented on Twitter.

Make Shinde recall letter on Muslims: BJP

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should ask Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to withdraw his letter asking chief ministers not to arrest innocent Muslims on terror charges, the BJP said Tuesday.

“This letter is against the spirit of the constitution. The prime minister should direct him to withdraw the letter,” BJP president Rajnath Singh told reporters here.

Shinde has told chief ministers to ensure that no innocent Muslim was arrested in the name of fighting terrorism.

Center should sent its team to review a latest political situation in A.P.-Finance Minister

Mr. A. Ramnarayan Reddy, Finance Minister of A.P told that the people of the State have apprehensions about the formation of separate Telangana State. He requested the Central Govt. to send its team to observe the political situation in the State. He targeted Mr. Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy that he has expressed that he would affix his first signature for the united A.P. He was posing himself as a pro- Telangana leader till very recently but he has changed his stand now.

I don’t aspire to be James Bond: Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bachchan has no desire to be James Bond but would not mind teaching actor Daniel Craig few Bollywood dance steps.

“Every actor has his own identity. I don’t aspire to be Bond. My quest is to do something new, something different,” the Bachchan Junior told PTI here when asked if he would try to emulate Craig as they both endorse the same global watch major.

Abhishek, however, said he would love to be part of a project featuring the troika of himself, Daniel and George Clooney (another brand ambassador of the same watch) which would be a typical Bollywood flick.

Vidya Balan lends voice for Draupadi in ‘Mahabharat’

Actress Vidya Balan has given a voiceover for the character of Draupadi in animation film ‘Mahabharat’.

The makers feel Vidya’s voice is appropriate for the iconic character, Draupadi.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better voice for the character of Draupadi than that of Vidya Balan,” film’s producer Jayantilal Gada said.

The animation film has a star-studded cast of voices of Amitabh Bachchan (Bheeshma Pitamah), Sunny Deol (Bheem) and Ajay Devgn (Arjun), Anil Kapoor (Karna) and Manoj Bajpai (Yudhishtir).

Gada is planning to release the film around Diwali festival this year.

Jagan visits estate, pays tributes to YSR

YSR Congress President YS Jaganmohan Reddy, who visited Edupulapaya Estate, almost after 16 months, offered prayers at his father and former Chief Minister late YS Rajasekhar Reddy’s memorial here today morning, party sources said.

It was learnt, that Jagan, who got bail in the disproportionate assets case last month, obtained permission from the CBI court to visit Edupulapaya Estate.

Iraq executes 23 people in two days: ministry

Iraq executed 23 people during two days in September, most of them convicted on terrorism charges, the justice ministry said today.

Twenty of the 23 were either Al-Qaeda members or otherwise involved in terrorism, while three were convicted of unspecified “criminal charges,” a ministry spokesman said.

The executions were carried out on September 22 and 26.

They take to at least 90 the number of people who have been put to death in Iraq this year, according to an AFP tally based on reports from the ministry and officials.

Minor raped in Kolkata, accused arrested

A minor girl was allegedly raped by a man at Bowbazar area of Kolkata here, police said today.

The six-year-old girl was raped by Mohammed Irshad in an abandoned bathroom of Bowbazar area yesterday, police said.

After the girl raised an alarm, the accused fled from the spot, but later he was arrested, they said.

Initial medical reports have suggested scars in the private parts of the minor.

Syria disarmament team launches mission

A chemical disarmament team crossed into Syria on Tuesday to begin the daunting task of inventorying the country’s arsenal of the banned weapons in readiness for its destruction.

The team from the Hague-based Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons arrived in Syria a day after the departure of a team of UN inspectors, who had been investigating a series of alleged chemical attacks.

Syria’s information minister meanwhile insisted that President Bashar al-Assad would stay in office and that he had the option to run for another term in elections next year.

Berlusconi pushes to topple Italy govt despite dissent

Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi today pressed ahead with plans to topple Prime Minister Enrico Letta but looked increasingly isolated as top aides from his party said they would support the government.

“Even though I understand the risks that I am taking on, I have decided to put an end to the Letta government,” Berlusconi said in an emotional letter sent to the Catholic weekly magazine Tempi.

Berlusconi accused Letta of allowing his “political assassination through judicial means” — a reference to his criminal conviction for tax fraud in August which triggered the current crisis.

World population to shoot up to 9.7 billion in 2050: study

The world’s population will rise to 9.7 billion in 2050 from the current level of 7.1 billion and India will overtake China as the world’s most populous nation, a French study said today.

A bi-annual report by the French Institute of Demographic Studies (Ined) projected there would be 10 to 11 billion people on the planet by the end of the century.

The projections ran parallel to forecasts by the United Nations, the World Bank and other prominent national institutes.

Rahul to kickstart Gujarat tour from Sabarmati Ashram on Oct 3

The US authorities have suspended posting car recall notices on its website due to the federal government’s shutdown.

Due to a lapse of federal government funding, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is unable to post any new recalls after closure of business on Sept. 30, reported Xinhua citing a note on NHTSA’s website published in Chicago Tribune daily.

Pregnant woman’s weight gain linked to kid’s obesity

A study has suggested the women who gain excessive weight in pregnancy are more likely to have overweight and obese children.

The findings, published in the US journal PLoS Medicine, suggested pregnancy may be “an especially important time” to prevent obesity in the next generation, Xinhua reported.

Researchers from Boston Children’s Hospital looked at 41,133 mothers with two or more children to find out whether childhood obesity was resultant because of the conditions during pregnancy or other factors, such as diet and genes, also played a role.

$1 mn seized from drug smugglers in Bolivia

Bolivian anti-narcotics authorities have seized $1 million in cash as drug traffickers threw it from a small plane in Santa Cruz province.

The operation, carried out by FELCN counternarcotics squad, took place last Sunday in the town of Pozo del Tigre, at some 140 km from Santa Cruz city, Interior Minister Carlos Romero told media.

The officers detected a clandestine landing strip where a person was signalling to an airplane flying overhead, from which a white bag containing the cash was thrown.

Three guerrillas killed in Colombia

Three FARC guerrillas were killed in a combat with the Colombian army in the rural portion of Tierralta, a northern municipality, the military said.

The FARC is the Andean nation’s largest rebel group and has been in peace talks with the government since the fall of 2012.

The fighting occurred in a sector of that municipality known as La Changa, on the border of the provinces of Cordoba and Antioquia, between members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and troops from the Nudo de Paramillo task force with air support.

US denies its diplomats conspired against Venezuela

The US State Department Tuesday denied Venezuelan charges that three US diplomats in Caracas conspired against the Andean nation, while adding that it was mulling a response to the trio’s expulsion.

“We completely reject the Venezuelan government’s allegations of the US government involvement in any type of conspiracy to destabilise the Venezuelan government,” department’s spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.
