NCP assures support to UPA on convicted lawmakers’ ordinance

With the ruling Congress Party contemplating to withdraw a contentious ordinance that allows convicted parliamentarians to stay in office, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader D.P. Tripathi on Wednesday said his party as a responsible UPA partner will abide by whatever decision Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh takes in this regard.

“This is not a Congress Government. This is a coalition government, the government of UPA. And we are a Congress ally, not Rahul Gandhi’s followers,” said Tripathi.

PM to brief Mukherjee on ordinance on convicted lawmakers

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has arrived at Rashtrapati Bhavan here to brief President Pranab Mukherjee on the decision taken by the Congress Core Group with regard to the ordinance on convicted parliamentarians.

Dr. Singh will meet President Mukherjee for around half-an-hour before the latter leaves on a two-nation visit to Belgium and Turkey.

(Siasat News): The custom officials at Rajiv Gandhi International airport arrested three persons with cigarettes cartons valued at Rs. 5.2 lakh.

According to the details, three persons arrived from Dubai. During the custom check, the officials found imported brand of cigarettes worth Es. 5.2 lakh.

A case has been registered cartons of cigarettes seized.

Nation remembers Gandhi on birth anniversary

The nation on Wednesday remembered Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 144th birth anniversary with top leaders paying floral tributes at his memorial here.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and senior BJP leader L K Advani were among prominent leaders who paid homage to Father of the Nation.

Pakistan to release four Indian prisoners

A federal review board comprising two judges of the Supreme Court has ordered release of four Indian prisoners, who have been languishing in different Pakistani jails on the charges of ‘illegal stay’.

Dil Bagh Singh, Sunil and two other Indians have completed their terms but they are still languishing in jail.

An Interior Ministry official yesterday informed the board that the government was taking steps to repatriate the prisoners who had completed their sentence.

Pakistan violates ceasefire as Manmohan returns after meeting Sharif

Pakistani troops fired at Indian positions on the line of control (LOC) in Mendhar sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir, in yet another violation of the bilateral ceasefire, a defence spokesman said Wednesday.

“Pakistan troops used small arms and automatics to target our positions in Mendhar sector of the LOC yesterday (Tuesday). Pakistan firing started at 2.30 p.m.,” Captain S.N. Acharya, defence spokesman, told IANS here today.

Ordinance controversy: Rahul meets PM

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, who had made strong comments against the ordinance on convicted lawmakers, today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Sources said Rahul met Singh at his residence here and the meeting between the two lasted 30 minutes.

The controversial ordinance was understood to be on the agenda and the two leaders discussed the way ahead on the issue, the sources said.

If PM has any shame left, then he should resign: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resign in the wake of the controversy over ordinance on convicted lawmakers.

BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said the Prime Minister should resign if he has any shame left.

It may be noted that Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has dubbed as “nonsense” the ordinance on convicted lawmakers issued by the Manmohan Cabinet.

90% seats in 12 DU colleges to be reserved for local students

With the upcoming Assembly Elections in mind, the Delhi government on Tuesday announced that it plans to reserve 90 per cent of the seats in the Delhi University for local students.

The city government will now send a proposal to this effect to the Central government and the reservation will be valid in 12 DU colleges.

The move is aimed at attracting the young voters, who are believed to be inclined towards the Aam Aadmi Party as per surveys.

Gujarat Assembly passes diluted Lokayukta Aayog Bill 2013

The Gujarat Lokayukta Commission Bill 2013 got state assembly nod on Tuesday which was recently returned by the State Governor Kamla Beniwal.

As per reports, the bill was passed without making changes sought by the Governor.

The three-day monsoon session of the Gujarat Assembly had begun yesterday and now the bill will be sent again to the Governor for her approval.

AP bifurcation: There won’t be water wars, assures minister

Andhra Pradesh Major Irrigation Minister P Sudershan Reddy today dismissed Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s claim that division of the state would lead to “water wars”.

“There will be no water wars. As the irrigation minister, I am saying that there will not be any problem with regard to sharing of river water. I am not concerned about what others say,” Sudershan Reddy told mediapersons here today.

All “systems” were in place to ensure that no problem arose over sharing of water, he said.
