Kuwait jails writer for tweets ‘defaming’ ex-PM

A Kuwaiti court today sentenced prominent opposition writer Mohammad al-Wushaihi to a three-month jail term for tweets deemed derogatory to a former prime minister.

The court ruling said Wushaihi had been convicted of posting messages on Twitter defaming former premier Sheikh
Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, a senior member of the ruling family.

The ruling stipulated that Wushaihi, who is also a television presenter, must start serving his jail term
immediately, but that he could appeal the sentence.

India is set to become world’s most populous country in the world by 2050 with a population of nearly 1.6 billion people. The revelation was made in a French study which estimated that the population globally is estimated to rise to 9.7 billion in 2050 from the current level of 7.1 billion. The bi-annual report by the French Institute of Demographic Studies revealed that India will overtake China as the world”s most populous nation. Shutdown to cost U.S. economy $300mln a day, say experts

The US Government shutdown would cost 300 million dollars per day, according the economic consulting firm IHS Global Insight. The figure means that about 12.5 million dollars will be lost an hour, or roughly 1.6 billion dollars a week, while the government is closed. The IHS analysis accounts only for the lost wages and productivity from the nearly 800,000 federal workers, ABC News reports. IHS estimates a week-long shutdown would cut the 4th quarter economic growth rate by 0.2 percentage points, bringing its forecast of 2.2 percent growth down to just 2.0 percent.

TV channels move TDSAT over TRAI’s ad cap norm

Some of the television channels have approached appellate tribunal TDSAT against 12-minute per hour cap on advertisements imposed by sectoral regulator TRAI.

Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) had earlier withdrawn its petition against the TRAI’s regulation on ad cap.

Broadcasters Sun TV, B4U Broadband, 9X Media and Polimer Media, which are members of IBF, have approached the
Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) on the ad cap issue.

Some entertainment channels such as TV Vision and E24 have also approached the tribunal opposing the cap.

Iran has prepared an “accurate proposal” for the upcoming nuclear talks with the world powers in Geneva, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said here Wednesday.

A two-year-old Chinese boy had to be operated upon to remove an undeveloped fetus of his parasitic twin brother from his stomach.

According to the Inquisitr, Xiao Feng, from Huaxi, China, was rushed to the hospital after his stomach became so inflated that he was finding it difficult to breath, News.com.au reported.

Doctors were shocked when the X-Rays and MRI scans revealed that the baby had a fetus of his twin inside his enlarged stomach.

Scientists develop tear and saliva glands in lab petri dish

In another boost to the creation of bio-engineered organs, scientists have created saliva glands and tear glands in a lab dish, using stem cells from mice.

Researchers, at the Tokyo University of Science, said that their findings could potentially help in treating the “dry eye” or “dry mouth” syndromes, which are caused by the malfunctioning glands, News 24 reported.

For the study, lead researcher, Takashi Tsuji, along with a team, grew the two glands in the lab dish from precursor cells, and transplanted the primitive organs into mice.

18 members of Pakistani Hindu family convert to Islam

Eighteen members of a Hindu family in Khanpur area of Pakistan’s central Punjab province have converted to Islam, local residents said on Wednesday.

Seven men and 11 women of the family adopted Islam during a ceremony conducted on Tuesday evening by Mian Ghaus Mohammad, custodian of the Khwaja Ghulam Fareed shrine at Jhok Farid.

They recited the Kalima Tayabba, the Islamic confession of faith, and converted to Islam, local residents were quoted as saying by state-run APP news agency.
