Shinde’s note to states against principle of secularism: RSS

RSS Wednesday hit out at Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde for his letter to state governments about ensuring that innocent Muslim youth were not detained in terror cases, saying it was “against the principle of secularism”.

Reacting to the Home Minister’s missive, senior RSS functionary Ram Madhav told reporters here that it was a move designed to appease the minorities.

Investigation of a crime should proceed only on the basis of facts, not religion, he added.

People want Modi as PM because of his achievements: Shah

BJP’s Uttar Pradesh in-charge Amit Shah today said that the country was supporting the party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi after witnessing his achievements as the Gujarat Chief Minister.

“People are demanding Modi as the PM because they have seen the progress of Gujarat… It reflects Modi’s achievements,” Shah said while addressing a public meeting to pay tributes to BJP leader late Deen Dayal Upadhyaya on his birth anniversary, today in Nagala Chandra Bhan.

Obama meets Congressional leaders, but no deal

As the US government shutdown headed towards a third day, President Barack Obama met four top congressional leaders seeking passage of a stopgap spending measure and a debt-ceiling increase, but failed to get a deal.

Obama’s first meeting Wednesday with John Boehner, speaker of the Republican controlled House, House majority leader Eric Cantor and Democrat Senate majority leader Harry Reid and House minority leader Nancy Pelosi yielded no breakthrough on the budget crisis.

In a sting operation conducted by a private news channel, district presidents of the BJP Minority Cell of Shahdara, Mayur Vihar and New Delhi districts were seen discussing the price at which they get crowds for rallies with journalists of the news channel, who posed as agents for supplying crowd for such gathering.

Man kills 2 children, commits suicide by jumping before train

A 35-year-old man allegedly killed his two children by throwing them before a running train and then committed suicide by jumping on tracks on Hissar-Bhiwani section.

The man, Krishan Saini, a truck driver, had a tiff with his wife after she refused to give him money for liqour on Tuesday night, police said. In a fit of rage, Krishan took his three-year-old son Lalit and five-year-old daughter with him and then pushed them before a running train near village Satroad Khas, about 15 Kms from Hisar, police said.

Hindu communal elements active before Eid-ul-Azha

Once again the Hindu communal organizations have become active. They have started stopping the vehicles carrying animals. They are confiscating the animals and assaulting the driver and the owners. In the name of Gow Rakhsha, they are also confiscating bullocks and calves whereas under the prohibition of slaughter act is applicable only in respect of cows. There is no ban on transporting buffalos, bullocks and calves. They are also seizing the vehicles and pressurizing the police authorities to register cases against the lorry drivers and the transporters of animals.

Lalu Prasad to be sentenced today, faces 4 years in jail

It is a crucial day for convicted RJD chief Lalu Prasad as a CBI court will announce the quantum of sentence in the fodder scam case on Thursday. Lalu faces a minimum of four years in jail in the case.

The sentence will be pronounced through videoconferencing. Lalu Prasad is currently in Birsa Munda central jail in Ranchi.

Arguments on the quantum of punishment by defence lawyers Chitranjan Sinha and Pravash Kumar as well as the prosecutor’s counsel BMP Singh will begin around 11.30 pm. Special Judge Pravas Kumar Singh will pronounce the sentence at 2.30 pm.

Rahul Gandhi two-day Gujarat visit begins today

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will begin his two-day visit to Gujarat from Thursday.

The young Congress leader will visit Mahatma Gandhi’s historic Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad today and later hold a meeting of office-bearers of district and block Congress committees, the statement said.

This will be followed by a meeting of the national executive of the National Students Union of India, the Congress’ student’s wing, and elected members of local self government institutions.

Wakf grant not utilized

Mr. Mohammed Sirajuddin, Chairman of Minorities Cell of APCC told that on the representation of Muslim organization, Mr. N. Kiran Kumar Reddy sanctioned Rs. 2.5 crore for the maintenance of Mosques etc. On 16th July Rs. 52, 91, 000 was given to Collector of Hyderabad where as Rs. 19, 36, 000 was sanctioned for Ranga Reddy district. The proceedings of these sanctions were sent to respective collectors. After that Minister of Minorities Welfare and Principal Secretary of the Dept. kept quiet.

‘US shutdown not impacting Indian IT sector’

The US government shutdown has not impacted the resilient Indian IT sector as the majority of its business is with the private sector, industry lobby Nasscom said Wednesday.

“A majority of the business our industry has is with the private sector, and is not directly dependent on federal spending. Hence we do not see an immediate economic impact,” the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) said in a statement here.

If, however, the shutdown continues for an extended period, there will be an overall macro-economic impact that may affect the industry.

JD-U suspends two MPs for six years

Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-United Wednesday suspended two of its MPs for six years for anti-party activities, a party leader said.

Purnmasi Ram from Gopalganj and Jai Narayan Nishad from Muzaffarpur were suspended by party president Sharad Yadav, JD-U spokesperson Sanjay Singh said here.

Purnmasi Ram was suspended after he praised Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad, convicted by a special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Ranchi Monday for fraudulent withdrawal of money from the exchequer in the fodder scam.

Fire at prominent Lucknow hospital

Patients and staff at the Vivekanand Hospital in Niralanagar in this Uttar Pradesh capital had a close shave with disaster Wednesday evening as a major fire broke out in the intensive care unit (ICU), police said.

The staff quickly managed to evacuate the five critically ill patients in the ICU, averting a disaster.

Hasanganj police inspector Satish Gautam told IANS that fire tenders battled for more than two hours to douse the fire.
