Nigeria to immunise 35 mln children against measles

Nigeria is set to immunise an estimated 35 million children against measles this month, an official said here Thursday.

The immunisation exercise will be conducted in two phases and children between nine months and five years will benefit from the programme, Xinhua reported citing Executive Director of Nigeria’s National Primary Healthcare Development Agency Ado Muhammad.

The first phase, which will kick off in the capital city Abuja and the 19 northern states of the West African country, will take place between Oct 5 and Oct 9, he said.

Singer Beyonce Knowles, who shares a close bond with her 20-month-old daughter Blue Ivy, says that during her delivery, she felt a communication with her unborn daughter.

Kenya seizes container with ivory

Authorities in Kenya Thursday seized a container carrying ivory at the port of Mombasa.

Beatrice Memo, an official from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), said the pieces of ivory were discovered wrapped in one of the 90 kg sacks, Xinhua reported.

Declaration documents indicated the container as carrying Sesame seeds packed in 250 bags with a total weight of 2,370 kg.

KRA documents show the goods were imported by Melmet Vegetable Oil Industry of Turkey. The exporter is Cosmo Freight Company of Uganda.

The container will go through further inspection.

Sarkozy’s ex-wife comes out with tell-all autobiography

Cecilia Attias, the ex-wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, is settling a few scores from her past in an autobiographical book.

“Une envie de vérité” (A Desire for Truth), which will go on sale in France Oct 9, promises to be a big hit on the fall reading list.

Attias tries not to ruffle too many feathers but nevertheless dots her i’s and crosses her t’s about some of the landmark events in her life with the former head of state.

Donatella Versace film based on fiction

A biopic on designer Donatella Versace is based on fiction and not fact, says a spokesperson of upmarket fashion label Versace.

The film tells the story of the fashion legacy which Donatella has created. The movie is an adaptation of Deborah Ball’s 2010 novel “House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival”, and has actress Gina Gershon as the leading lady.

“Since Versace did not authorise the book on which it is based, the movie should only be seen as a work of fiction,” WWD quoted a spokesperson from the fashion house as saying.

Police confirm death of suspect in Capitol incident

Police confirmed Thursday evening the death of the woman implicated in an incident that began in front of the White House earlier in the day and ended minutes later, after an automobile chase, when police shot her near the Capitol.

District of Columbia police chief Cathy Lanier confirmed that the woman, whom she did not identify, died after being shot by police.

Authorities also found a child in the woman’s vehicle, but the youngster was not hurt in the incident.

Iran warns Israel against ‘interference’ in nuke talks

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Thursday that Tehran will not allow Israel to “interfere” in the process of negotiations over the country’s nuclear programme, media reports said.

The minister alluded to the anti-Iran statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his Tuesday speech at the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, Xinhua reported citing a Press TV report.

“We definitely will not allow Netanyahu to decide on how we should pursue the nuclear talks. We will decide by ourselves,” Zarif said.

Palestinians celebrate reclaim of Houmesh settlement

Palestinian farmers from the northern West Bank city of Nablus were jubilant Thursday after reclaiming a piece of land that had been confiscated by Israel for building settlements 35 years ago.

According to an Israeli judiciary decision early this week, the Palestinian farmers reclaimed the land they lost to an Israeli settlement in the 1970s, Xinhua reported.

Lithuania refuses probe into CIA ‘black site’ allegations

Lithuanian prosecutors today declined to investigate fresh claims that a Saudi terror suspect was held in an alleged secret CIA jail in the Baltic state.

Last week, two human rights groups said they had lodged a complaint with prosecutors for 45-year-old Mustafa al-Hawsawi, insisting he was imprisoned at an alleged CIA “black site” on Lithuanian soil between 2004 and 2006.

Prosecutors in Vilnius today said the group had failed to provide any evidence of wrongdoing. It also insisted a previous probe had ruled out claims that Al-Qaeda suspects were brought to the EU country.

Telangana: Seemandhra lawyers call for bandh

Seemandhra Lawyers Joint Action Committee (JAC) today called for a 48-hour bandh in 13 districts of Seemandhra in protest against Union Cabinet’s decision to approve creation of Telangana as the 29th state.

JAC co-convener Muppalla Subba Rao tonight said in a statement that the bandh will start tomorrow.

“The decision taken by the Central Cabinet has hurt the sentiments of, and disrespected the people of Andhra Pradesh,” he said.

Aurangabad Arms case: Approver wants to be treated as accused

The special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court today rejected an application of an approver, arrested in the 2006 Aurangabad Arms Haul case, to withdraw his confession.

Accused Mustafa Sayyed’s statement was recorded by a magistrate in December 2007 after he said that he wanted to become an approver (prosecution witness).

But in the latest application, he said he did not want to become approver, he should be treated as an accused, and charges should be framed against him.

He alleged that Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad (ATS) forced him to turn approver.

2 robbers arrested using CCTV footage

Two persons were arrested today for allegedly looting a family after taking them hostage on gun point.

Acting on a tip off, police nabbed the duo identified as Nitesh and Chandra Bharadwaj from Najafgarh area for committing robbery in Baba Haridas Nagar of south-west Delhi at the house of one Surendra Kharab, who deals in real estate.

According to the police, the duo barged into the house after scaling the wall from the backside and barged into the room where Surendra’s mother Rajbala and sister Sunita were sleeping.

Maid rescued from a house in Ambala city

In a joint operation, Labour Department and Police rescued a minor girl working as domestic help at a house in a posh locality in Ambala city today.

The girl was employed in the house through a recruiting agency around one and half year back and her health condition of is not good, an official said.

Child Protection Officer Mega Singla told reporters that she received information from one of the residents of Sector 7 about the poor physical condition of the domestic help working in the house of one Sandeep Kumar.

Telangana: Kiran calls emergency meeting today

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy convened an emergency meeting at 11.30 am today with ministers, MPs, MLCs and MLAs from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema to discuss the developments following the Union Cabinet’s approval of bifurcation of the state.

A decision on en masse resignation by ministers and legislators is expected to be taken at the meeting.

UN team hopes to start disabling Syria chem arms soon

Experts overseeing the destruction of Syria’s chemical arsenal hope to begin on-site inspections and the initial disabling of arms “within the next week,” the United Nations said today.

The joint mission of the UN and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said it “has made encouraging initial progress” adding that documents handed over by Damascus yesterday “look promising”.

Iraq: Deadly bomb blast hits soccer field

A bomb exploded near a soccer field while teenagers were playing south of Baghdad, the deadliest of three attacks that left eight dead in Iraq today, according to authorities.

The blast struck in Madain, a mixed town of Sunni and Shiite Muslims about 25 kilometers southeast of the Iraqi capital. Police said at least five people were killed and 13 wounded in the attack.

A suspected member of banned Hizbul Mujahideen was today remanded in seven days of NIA custody by a Delhi court in connection with a case lodged in 2011 for allegedly distributing funds received from PoK for terror strikes in India.

Accused Talib Ali was produced before district judge I S Mehta during an in-camera proceeding from a jail in Kashmir and the NIA sought his custodial interrogation saying that he was required to be quizzed regarding the distribution of funds for terror strikes.

Pakistani court adjourns Mumbai attacks case for three weeks

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court today adjourned the Mumbai attacks case for three weeks after the prosecution said India had not submitted a report on the cross-examination of key witnesses by a Pakistani judicial commission.

Prosecution officials told Judge Attiqur Rehman of the anti-terrorism court in Islamabad that the report on the Pakistani judicial commission’s visit to India would be presented in court once the Pakistani government received it from India.

Overflowing tank cause of new leak at Fukushima

Another day, another radioactive-water spill. The operator of the meltdown-plagued Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant says at least 430 litres (110 gallons) spilled when workers overfilled a storage tank without a gauge that could have warned them of the danger.

The amount is tiny compared to the untold thousands of tons of radioactive water that have leaked, much of it into the Pacific Ocean, since a massive earthquake and tsunami wrecked the plant in 2011.

But the error is one of many the operator has committed as it struggles to manage a seemingly endless, tainted flow.

‘Iran’s cyber warfare head shot dead in alleged assassination’

The commander of Iran’s cyber warfare programme has been found dead with two bullet wounds near his heart in a suspected assassination, according to media reports today.

The body of Mojtaba Ahmadi, who served as commander of the Cyber War Headquarters, was found in a wooded area near the town of Karaj, northwest of the capital Tehran.

Iranian police said two people on a motorcycle had been involved in the killing of Ahmadi.

Israel ‘angry’ with new Iran-West logic: Rouhani

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said today that Israel was “upset and angry” with signs of an emerging new relationship between the Islamic republic and the West.

Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a UN summit his country was ready to act alone to halt Iran’s alleged efforts to build a nuclear bomb.
