Brandeis University researchers report that sNPF, a neuropeptide long known to regulate food intake and metabolism, is also an important component in regulating and promoting sleep.

When researchers activated sNPF in fruit flies, the insects fell asleep almost immediately, awaking only long enough to eat before nodding off again.

A woman was killed in a chaotic care chase that began when she tried to ram a security barrier near the White House. The car chase ended after the suspect was shot near the U.S. Capitol by police. The incident had put the Hill temporarily on lockdown and caused what one witness described as ‘mass panic’. According to Fox News, police confirmed that the suspect was killed after being struck by officers” gunfire. The Secret Service said she had a one-year-old girl in the car, who was not injured. D.C. Americans blame Republicans more than Democrats for the US shutdown, according to a new poll. The CBS News Poll, taken since the government shut down on Tuesday, found that 44 percent of Americans blamed Republicans as compared to 35 percent who blamed President Barack Obama and the Democrats. Nearly 17 percent of those surveyed blamed both the parties for the standoff, Politico reports. The poll numbers are nearly identical to a poll taken before the shutdown about who would get the blame, with the only difference being 16 percent said they would blame both parties.

British citizens enjoy the widest range of visa-free travel in the world, being able to visit 173 countries with just a passport, while Indians get visa-free or visa-on-arrival access in 52 countries.

The UK citizens are at par with those from Finland and Sweden for visa-free access, according to Henley & Partners Visa Restriction Index.

Nine out of the top ten in the index are European Union countries, with the tenth being the United States.

UN team says ”progress made on inspection” of chemical weapons in Syria

A United Nations team given the task of eliminating Syria”s chemical weapons has said it has made encouraging initial progress after talks with government officials. The experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said Syrian documents handed over on Wednesday looked promising. The team said analysis of technical diagrams would be necessary and more questions remain to be answered, the BBC reports. Onsite inspections and arms disabling are scheduled to start next week.

Pakistan to continue moratorium on capital punishment to honour international commitments

Pakistan has scrapped plans to reinstate death penalty, following threats by Taliban to increase attacks in retaliation. A moratorium signed in 2008 on capital punishment imposed by Pakistan’s previous government expired on June 30 and the country had been due to execute two jailed militants in August. The execution plan was described by the Pakistani Taliban as an act of war.

US retailers have been forced to pull a turban-and beard- costume after the Sikh community in the country claimed the outfit looked like Osama bin Laden. Idols of Hindu gods, goddesses vandalised in Bangladesh

Eight newly made idols of Hindu gods and goddesses were vandalised in northern Bangladesh today, prompting police to launch an investigation.

Police said unidentified persons broke into the Sarbojanin puja ‘mandap’ at Chandrakala village in Natore district early this morning and disfigured the idols of Durga, Lakshmi, Ganesh and Kartik.

The incident occurred as the Hindu minority was gearing up to celebrate its biggest festival – Durga Puja – next week.

Today is being observed by the community as Mahalaya, the auspicious occasion that heralds the advent of Durga Puja.

Jiah’s mom says she was murdered, moves HC seeking CBI probe

Nearly four months after actor Jiah Khan allegedly committed suicide, her mother has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court alleging that she was murdered and demanded a CBI probe into the death.

The petition, filed on October 1, is expected to come up for hearing before a single-judge Bench next week, her lawyer Dinesh Tiwari told PTI.

Jiah’s mother Rabia Amin has alleged that it has come to light that her daughter may have been killed and made to look as if she committed suicide.

Omar asks youngsters to wear helmets while riding bikes

Opposition says govt. has created ‘near civil war’ situation in Andhra

Several opposition leaders said on Friday that the UPA-II regime has createda civil war-like situation in Andhra Pradesh by going ahead with plans to create a separate state of Telangana.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yashwant Sinha said that the Centre has mishandled the issue of statehood, and created a civil war-like situation in Andhra Pradesh.
