PM to take a call on resignations of Seemandhra ministers

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will on Saturday decide on the resignations of three Union ministers who quit office over the Union Cabinet’s decision to proceed with the creation of Telangana state.

Minister of Human Resource Development Pallam Raju, who was present at Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, resigned on Friday night. Ministers of State K Chiranjeevi and Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy have also announced their resignations.

The PM will decide on the resignations of the above-mentioned ministers today.

Special court allows CBI to question PP Pandey

A special court here on Friday accepted CBI’s application to interrogate suspended IPS officer PP Pandey in judicial custody in connection with the encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others.

CBI had moved an application before Special CBI judge Gita Gopi, seeking interrogation of PP Pandey in judicial custody, which was accepted.

Pandey’s lawyers had demanded that he be interrogated in his presence, which was also accepted by the court.

Pandey’s interrogation has been granted by the Special CBI judge, within visible distance of his advocate.

Six new coronavirus cases reported from Saudi Arabia

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said Friday that it has been informed of six fresh laboratory-confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in Saudi Arabia.

Globally, since September 2012, WHO has been informed of a total of 136 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV that has claimed 58 lives, Xinhua reported citing WHO.

The organisation said in its latest update that the six new patients were from Riyadh region in the age group of 14 to 79 years, of which three are women and three are men.

Vietnamese legendary general Vo Nguyen Giap dies at 102

The Vietnamese legendary general Vo Nguyen Giap, the commander of Vietnamese army who masterminded military victories against the US and France, passed away Friday at the age of 102 in a hospital here.

The general died at the Army Central Hospital 108 in the national capital, where he was undergoing treatment since 2009, Xinhua reported citing a report by VNExpress online.

Born in August 25, 1911, General Giap led Vietnamese army and people in significant battles, including the Dien Bien Phu against France in 1954 and the Ho Chi Minh Campaign against the US in 1975.

Drug treatment for Downey Jr.’s son

Actor Robert Downey Jr.’s 20-year-old son is undergoing treatment for substance abuse issues.

The 48-year-old’s ex-wife Deborah Falcone has revealed that their son Indio is currently receiving “holistic, natural and orthomolecular” therapy at an undisclosed treatment facility, reports contactmusic.com.

“We are hoping to do it the homeopathic way rather than with medications. He’s being treated with vitamin supplements and organic foods,” Falcone added.

Spending problem needs be addressed: US House Speaker

US House Speaker John Boehner said Friday that the US government needs to deal with its spending problem and stressed that the Republicans want neither a government shutdown nor a default.

“The American people don’t want their government (to) shut down, and neither do I,” Xinhua quoted Boehner as saying in a Republican press conference at the Capitol Hill.

Four dead as violence erupts in Egypt

At least four people were killed and 40 others wounded in the Egyptian capital and other parts of the country Friday during protests staged by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, Al Jazeera reported.

Morsi’s loyalists clashed with police when they attempted to enter Tahrir Square in Cairo. Eyewitnesses said that tear gas shells were fired to disperse protesters.

In Alexandria, too, police fired tear gas to dissuade local residents from fighting with anti-coup protesters.

Filmmaker Tim Burton was photographed locking lips with a mystery woman.

Burton, who is dating actress Helena Bonham Carter since 12 years, was seen in a compromising embrace with the blonde woman after leaving a movie theater here in late September, reports dailymail.co.uk.

According to a source, Burton and the mystery woman got intimate after a screening of “The Wicker Man”.

Coalition talks in Germany to continue Oct 14

The first round of coalition talks between German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc and its main opponent ended Friday with both sides agreeing to continue the talks in 10 days.

The atmosphere of the exploratory talks Friday was “good, sober and constructive”, Hermann Groehe, secretary general of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), told reporters after emerging from a meeting, Xinhua reported.

Andrea Nahles, secretary general of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), said the talks were in an “open-minded atmosphere”.

Three tonne cocaine seized in Ecuador

Ecuador’s anti-narcotic agents seized at least three tonne cocaine in an operation in coastal province of Santa Elena, Ecuador’s Interior Minister Jose Serrano said Friday.

“The amount of drug is significantly increasing,” said the minister via Twitter after 11 people were arrested in the operation starting Thursday night.

Serrano said those arrested are related to the most powerful Colombian paramilitary and drug trafficking band called Los Urabenos.

Kenya riots claim four lives

Authorities in Kenyan have heightened security in the coastal city of Mombasa after riots sparked by the killing of Muslim preachers left at least four people dead and seven injured.

The deceased succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment in hospital in the tourism resort city, Xinhua reported citing Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS).

The death toll rose as tension remained high in the Majengo and Kisauni areas as youths were protesting the killing of Sheikh Ibrahim Ismael and three others by unknown gunmen Thursday.

Actress Lea Michele has sung for actor Cory Monteith’s tribute episode on musical TV drama “Glee”.

He had submitted his dissertation on “Urdu Journalism in A.P from 1956 to 2006” under the supervision of Dr. Mosrath Jehan, Asst. Professor of Urdu. Chile, Thailand sign free trade agreement

Chile and Thailand signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Friday which immediately lifted tariffs on more than 90 percent of Chilean products to be exported to the Asian country, the Chilean government said in a statement.

The FTA was signed in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, by visiting Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Xinhua reported citing the statement issued here.

“For Chilean exporters, this will mean an access in preferential conditions to a market of more than 70 million people,” the statement quoted Pinera as saying.
