US drone kills three more in Pakistan

At least three people were killed and four injured in a US drone strike launched early Monday in Pakistan’s northwest tribal area of North Waziristan, Xinhua reported.

The strike was carried out at about 4.00 a.m. local time when unmanned US aircraft fired two missiles at a house suspected of being a militant hideout in North Waziristan’s Datta Khel area, local media said.

On Sunday, four people were killed in a drone attack in this tribal region’s Dargah Mandi area.

At least 117 people have reportedly been killed in such attacks since the start of the year.

China seeks to help Sudan, South Sudan mend ties

China stands ready to help improve the relationship between Sudan and South Sudan, the Chinese ambassador in the Sudanese capital said Sunday.

“China appreciates the two parties’ adherence to the option of peace and urges them to find solutions to the outstanding issues between them through dialogue,” reported Xinhua citing Luo Xiaoguang saying during a reception held to mark the 64th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, which falls Oct 1.

“We reiterate China’s readiness to play a vital role in enhancing the relations between the two countries,” he added.

Isareli president dislikes PM’s view on US-Iran diplomacy

Israeli President Shimon Peres has criticised his Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “scornful” approach towards the developing diplomatic ties between the US and Iran.

On Saturday night, ahead of leaving for the US, Netanyahu said that Iran was using the diplomatic approach as a tactic to “fool” the west while it continues to enrich uranium and that he was going to “expose the truth” of Iran’s “sweet talk” and “onslaught of smiles”, Xinhua reported

China offers solar power tax breaks

In its latest bid to encourage the use of green energy, the Chinese government has announced tax breaks to manufacturers of solar power products.

From Oct 1, 2013 to Dec 31, 2015, vendors of self-produced power products using solar energy will immediately receive refund of the 50 percent of the value-added taxes, reported Xinhua Sunday citing the finance ministry.

The move came as China tries to digest the over-supply of photovoltaic products in the its domestic market after demand from major export destinations — the European Union and the US — faltered due to trade rows.

Vipassana pioneer S.N. Goenka is dead

Spiritualist and pioneer of the Vipassana meditation in India, S.N. Goenka died late Sunday night due to old age, an aide said here Monday.

He was 90 and is survived by his wife Mata Elaichidevi and six sons.

The end came at his home in Andheri, Mumbai and the funeral will be conducted Tuesday in Jogeshwari electric crematorium, said aide Gautam Gaikwad.

Goenka started teaching Vipassana meditation in 1969 and followed it up with a meditation centre in Igatpuri, Nashik in 1976.

Later, it blossomed into 172 such centres worldwide, including 75 in India.

Two school girls killed in wall collapse in Odisha

Two minor girls were killed and one injured when the parapet of a hostel building of a government-run residential school collapsed in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, officials said on Monday.

The mishap occurred at the premises of Sevashram school at Bastingia, 230 km from state capital Bhubaneswar on Sunday when around 40 students were sitting on the verandah of the girls’ hostel for meals.

The parapet which was in a dilapidated condition came crashing down on them leaving little scope for the victims to escape.

Five die in US road crash

Five people were killed and two injured in a rear-end collision between two trucks in the US state of Texas, authorities said.

Officials from Texas Department of Public Safety said the accident happened early Sunday morning on a road near Seagraves in west Texas, reported Xinhua.

A pickup carrying two people collided with the rear of another truck carrying five, causing both to overturn. After rolling over, the vehicles came to rest in a roadside ditch.

Five of the seven died at the scene while the other two were taken to a hospital.

Modi to visit Mumbai today

Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will on Monday land in Mumbai, a day after addressing his first – and a mammoth – rally in Delhi in his new avatar.

Modi, who is not scheduled to address any rally in Mumbai, will land here at around 4 pm.

Probe launched after vet drugs found on Dubai jet: report

Dubai monarch and leading racehorse owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has ordered a probe after an illegal shipment of veterinary goods was found on a government jet, the Guardian reported today.

British authorities seized the unlicensed products, which included steroidal injections, anaesthetics and anti-inflammatories, from a Dubai government private jet at London’s Stansted airport earlier this year, according to the report.

Friend arrested for raping fashion designer student

A man was arrested for raping his 22-year-old fashion designer student friend in a hotel two days ago, police said Sunday.

Vaibhav Jain, 27, was nabbed Saturday night from his central Delhi Karol Bagh residence.

The victim told police she went with Jain to Nehru Place Friday where he offered her a liquor-laced cold drink.

As per her statement, police said, Jain took her to a hotel in south Delhi’s Safdarjung area after she fell unconscious. He then raped her.

Police said the victim approached them after regaining consciousness.

3-year-old US girl brings 14 bags of pot to school

A 3-year-old girl accidentally brought 14 bags of marijuana to school in US, which was stuffed in her backpack by a family friend.

The toddler arrived at her Harlem day care center here carrying 14 bags of marijuana in her pink Minnie Mouse backpack, police said.

According to police, a friend of the girl’s father was arrested after admitting the marijuana was his, ‘New York Daily News’ reported.

The school administration called up police, who found a “substantial” amount of marijuana in the child’s backpack.

Iran ready to discuss ‘limits’ to uranium enrichment:deputy FM

Iran is willing to discuss limits in the level to which it enriches uranium but will never suspend the process altogether, the deputy foreign minister said in comments reported today.

“Over the past 10 years, we have insisted that a total suspension of uranium enrichment is out of the question,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who plays a key role in nuclear talks with the West.
