Lalu Prasad taken to jail

RJD President Lalu Prasad was today taken to jail after being convicted by a special CBI court here in the fodder scam case.

65-year-old Prasad was taken to the Birsa Munda Central Jail here.

The court has fixed October three for pronouncement of sentence against Yadav, former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra and others convicted in the case.

While coming out from the court, Yadav appeared calm and did not take any question as his car sped away to the jail located at Hotwar on the outskirts of Ranchi, adjacent to the National Games Village.

Singh did not complain to Obama on Pakistan: Khurshid

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told US President Barack Obama about cross border terrorism to let him know “his true feelings” and concerns and it was not in the form of a complaint, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said today.

A new research has found that children born to mothers under 30 are more likely to die than those born to older mums.

While overall child mortality fell by 50 percent in the past 20 years, young maternal age was found to be a risk factor for death in early childhood, according to a report on child deaths in the UK.

Support should be extended to mothers of all ages, not just first-time teenage mums, the report said.

The research was led by the Institute of Child Health at UCL, the BBC reported.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday welcomed the judgement of a CBI designated court to hold former Bihar Chief Ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Dr. Jagannath Mishra guilty of corruption in a fodder scam case, and said this historic verdict is a justice day for the state presently ruled by the Janata Dal (United).

BJP General Secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy, while reacting to the verdict, said it is a judgement related to the Fodder Scam in which loot, a scam of more than 5,000 crores was discovered in the state of undivided Bihar when Bihar and Jharkhand was together.

Israel claims arresting Iranian spy

Israel has said it has arrested a Belgian citizen of Iranian-origin accused of spying for Iran under the guise of a windows and roofing salesman.

Israel’s Shin Bet domestic security service said the accused spy, identified as businessman Ali Mansouri, admitted that he was recruited by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force last year.

He said that he was sent to Israel to set up business ties as a front for spying on Israeli and Western targets.

Fodder scam: Lalu held guilty, sentencing on October 3

A CBI designated court on Monday declared Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav guilty in a case related to the Rs. 950 crore fodder scam.

The judgement is a major blow for Yadav, who faces immediate disqualification as a Member of Parliament and won’t be allowed to contest elections for six years. The court said that it will announce the sentence on the RJD supremo on October 3.

Israeli Navy to have new patrol boats

The Israeli Navy is all set to get three next-generation patrolling boats, the state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has revealed.

The Israel Navy currently deploys four Super Dvoras in routine security patrols along the country’s coasts and maritime borders with Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, Xinhua reported.

These are used in counter-terrorism and infiltration operations, as well as preventing smuggling and other illegal activity endangering strategic assets, such as newly- discovered natural gas reservoirs, among other missions, IAI said.

US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

Kenya arrests one more suspect over mall attack

Kenyan security forces Sunday nabbed another suspect, raising the number of arrested people to 10 over the Sep 21 terror attack on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall.

“There are nine suspects in custody who are held under the counter-terrorism laws. As soon as investigations are complete, we will update you with identities of the suspects,” reported Xinhua citing Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Interior Joseph Ole Lenku stating during a press conference here.

“More suspects continue to be arrested including one arrested today,” he added.

Syrian chemical arsenal probe this week

A team of 20 experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), will begin verifying Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal as a first step in its destruction this coming week.

“The group of inspectors will depart (Monday) but they will not begin their work until Tuesday” in the Arab nation, and “on that same day they will have contact with top political officials” in Syria, OPCW officials said.
