Srinivasan set to be re-elected as BCCI president

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president N.Srinivasan has been nominated to serve a second consecutive term as chief, and is all set to head the body again unapposed after cricket associations in the South Zone unanimously voted in his favour.

However, a revolt seems to be in the offing, with three BCCI vice-presidents – Arun Jaitley, Niranjan Shah and Sudhir Dabir choosing not to file their nominations.

The BCCI””s 84th Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the ITC Park Sheraton hotel in Chennai at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Congress, BJP lock horns over Rahul Gandhi’s ordinance comment

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla on Saturday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for demanding Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s resignation following Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the ordinance on convicted politicians.

“The Prime Minister wasn’t insulted. Rahulji didn”t welcome the ordinance,” he said, while accusing the BJP of politicising the issue.

Miss Philippines is Miss World 2013

Megan Young from Philippines was crowned Miss World 2013 here Saturday. The second place went to Miss France Marine Lorphelin and third to Miss Ghana Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter.

The 23-year-old defeated 126 contestants including Miss India Navneet Kaur Dhillon, who could only make her way to top 20, to clinch the crown.

Carve out Telangana without further delay, says Sushma Swaraj

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj Saturday asked the central government to carve out separate Telangana state without further delay and warned the Congress against another betrayal.

TRS chief demands dismissal of Andhra chief minister

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao Saturday demanded the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government dismiss Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and impose President’s rule to carve out separate Telangana state.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, said the chief minister should be dismissed for challenging the decision of the Congress leadership and for belittling Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh.

Roadside bombs kill 5 in Afghanistan

Provincial officials say two separate roadside bomb attacks have killed five Afghan civilians in the eastern and southern parts of the country.

Shafiqullah Nang, who is spokesman for the eastern province of Ghazni, said three civilians died today when their
minivan was struck by a roadside bomb as they were driving from Dayak district to Ghazni city.

He says that another eight people were wounded, including two women and two children.

In a second explosion, Fared Ayal, a spokesman for the police chief of southern Uruzgan province, said two men died

Three held on charges of betting on CLT20

Three persons have been arrested for reportedly indulged in betting on the ongoing Champions League T20 Cricket Tournament from a hotel here.

The arrests were made last night on a tip off and Rs 22,000 seized from these persons, identified as Akash and
Janardhanan of Peelamedu and Pankaj Kumar of K K Pudur in the city, police said today .

Further investigations are on to find out the invovement of more persons, since the trio are found engaged in betting
in a hotel in posh R S Puram locality, they said.

Hollywood actress Jessica Alba showed off a new shorter hairstyle at the premiere of her film ‘A.C.O.D.’.

The 32-year-old actress joined co-stars including Adam Scott, Amy Poehler and Jane Lynch at the Landmark Theatre in
Los Angeles where she showed off her new look and was dressed to impress in a cropped black top and black skirt, reported Contactmusic.

Syrian rebels capture post near Jordan border

A Syrian activist group says rebels have captured a military post south of the country on the border with Jordan after four days of fighting.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 26 soldiers were killed in the battle as well as a number
of rebels, including seven foreign fighters.

The post that was captured early today served in the past as the customs office on the border with Jordan. It was turned into an army post years ago.

The post is in the southern city of Daraa where the uprising against President Bashar Assad’s regime began in
March 2011.

Body found in jeep

The police today recovered a body from an abandoned jeep near Jangalbeldari village on Bypass road under Nagar police station of Nawada district, police sources said.

The deceased has been identified as Vijay Kumar Tanti, a resident of Gangiya village under Gangaur police
station of Khagaria district.

It was being suspected that Tanti was killed somewhere else and his body was kept inside the stolen jeep. A helmet
was found in the vehicle.

The dead body was sent for autopsy.

BJP Vice-President Uma Bharti today said that she would canvass for the party in Madhya Pradesh ahead of the state polls if the party leadership directs her.

I will go wherever (BJP president) Rajnath Singh asks me to go (for campaigning),” Bharati told PTI when asked
whether she was ready to canvass for her party in Madhya Pradesh for the upcoming assembly elections.

The senior BJP leader also clarified that she had attended the party’s ‘Karyakarta Mahakumbh’ in held in Madhya
Pradesh capital last Wednesday only at the insistence of the party chief.

Kachroo ragging case: Convicts get nod to rejoin college

Four medical college students convicted for ragging to death their junior Aman Kachroo would now return to the classroom as the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Saturday allowed them to complete their studies.

The conviction of Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma, who were punished for the 2009 ragging death of Kachroo, was upheld by the Himachal Pradesh High Court in April.

The university executive council, chaired by Vice chancellor A.D.N. Bajpai, has allowed the convicts to continue their MBBS degree, an HPU statement said.

Indian-origin Briton among the dead in Nairobi

An Indian-origin Briton was among those killed in the terror attack on a mall in Kenyan capital Nairobi after he offered himself as a hostage to save a group of children.

London-born Mitul Shah, 38, a marketing executive at Bidco Oil, an east African cooking oil company, tried to negotiate with the terrorists in a bid to save the 33 youngsters taking part in a TV cooking competition that his company was sponsoring on the roof of the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, The Evening Standard reported.

Indian-origin student in UK dies after being hit by train

An Indian-origin medical student at King’s College here died when she was hit by a train soon after a row with a fellow student.

Anita Trivedi’s family fears she may have killed herself as a result of bullying at college.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said the death was not being treated as suspicious. An inquest into the death was opened on Wednesday and adjourned.

The 23-year-old student’s father, Kailash Trivedi, a general practitioner, said his daughter had seemed happy despite repeating a year after failing a set of examinations.

Pranksters promising 450,000 pounds to users on Google anniversary to gain access to personal info

In what appears to be a major prank played on Google fans, an email was reportedly sent to users, informing them that they have won an award worth 450,000 pounds as a part of the site’s promotion on its 15th anniversary.

The email, sent by Evans Lucas (Public Information Officer), directed the users to a PDF letter attachment giving details about the computer generated ballot system that chose winners which was organized by Google Inc.

A recent Rutgers study has contradicted the public perception that the increasing number of children in immigrant families is a major obstacle to a strong United States economy.

The study titled, “How Much Does Change in the Proportion of Children Living in Immigrant Families Contribute to Change in the Poverty Rate Among Children?” has raised the question of whether federal policies affecting immigrants should be significantly altered or not over the reason that growing number of children was becoming the primary reason for children living in poverty.
