Thousands protest as Sudan officials promise cash

Thousands of Sudanese protesters took to the streets of the capital Khartoum , chanting “freedom” and renewing calls for their longtime autocratic president to resign after dozens of protesters were killed in a week of demonstrations sparked by austerity measures.

The government, which has imposed a media blackout, moved to appease the rancor with cash, saying it would distribute cash to half a million families to offset higher fuel and food prices in a country where nearly half the population lives below the poverty line.

Plane skids off runway at Rome airport: ANSA

A plane skidded off the runway at Rome’s Fiumicino airport after its landing gear malfunctioned during a thunderstorm but no one was injured, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The plane, an Airbus A320 belonging to flagship carrier Alitalia and flying in from Madrid which skidded yesterday, had 151 passengers on board.

It could be seen lying on its side near the runway, the report said.

The national air transport safety agency said it had opened an investigation into the incident and dispatched two officers to examine the plane.

Iran FM accuses Netanyahu of ‘lie attack’ on nukes

Assad says Syria will comply with UN arms resolution

Syria will comply with a UN resolution to destroy its chemical arsenal, President Bashar al-Assad said today, as weapons experts prepared to head to Damascus to begin the task.

In the latest violence, an air raid hit a high school in the northern rebel-held city of Raqa killing 16 people, including 10 students, as troops battled rebels on several fronts, a watchdog said.

A team of around 20 inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is due in Damascus on Tuesday and will immediately meet regime officials, an OPCW official said.

Chemical weapons inspectors outline Syria plan

Inspectors who will oversee Syria’s destruction of its chemical weapons said today their first priority is to help the country scrap its ability to manufacture such arms by a November 1 deadline, using every means possible.

The chemical weapons inspectors said that may include smashing mixing equipment with sledgehammers, blowing up delivery missiles, driving tanks over empty shells or filling them with concrete, and running machines without lubricant so they seize up and become inoperable.

Gunmen attack Malian soldiers in rebel stronghold: governor

The Malian army came under attack today from gunmen in the northern rebel stronghold of Kidal, the regional governor said, three days after peace talks with rebels broke down.

“As I speak a lot of shots are being fired in Kidal. Armed men are shooting and the Malian soldiers have retaliated,” Adama Kamissoko told AFP by telephone from the city.

“I do not know exactly who is firing against the Malian army, but it is defending itself.”

Sharif asks aides to explain Indians on ‘dehati aurat’ remarks

The ‘dehati aurat’ comment attributed to him is learnt to have upset Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who in immediate damage-control, sent a message to his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh that he never used such a language against him.

Accession of J&K to India is irrevocable, says RSS chief Bhagwat

RSS chief Mohan Rao Bhagwat Sunday said that accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India was irrevocable and launched a veiled attack at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for telling a European delegation that the accession was on four matters and the state had “only acceded and not merged”.

“The accession of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India is not due to the document of accession. Kashmir was ours since times immemorial. Accession is irreversible and irrevocable,” Bhagwat said.

Srinivasan, however, can only take charge after the Supreme Court rules on a petition filed by Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) secretary Aditya Verma. The apex court will hear the case Monday.

Modi replaced by Rajnath as BJP election campaign panel chief

A fortnight after he was anointed as BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi today relinquished the post of Election Campaign Committee Chief to which party President Rajnath Singh was appointed.

Modi, who was declared the PM candidate by the party top brass on September 13, today proposed the name of Singh in the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting for the post of Election Campaign Committee Chief.

“Modi proposed Rajnath Singh’s name and it was accepted unanimously by all the Parliamentary Board members,” BJP general secretary Ananth Kumar told reporters.

50 students killed as militants storm college in Nigeria

At least 50 students were killed in their sleep by suspected Boko Haram militants as they opened fire in a college dormitory in northeast Nigeria, in the latest violence blamed on the dreaded Islamist group.

Gunmen attacked the College of Agriculture in Gujba, Yobe state, in the early hours and shot students when they were asleep, sources said.

College provost Molima Idi Mato confirmed the casualty figure at 50, but added the death toll could be higher as more bodies were being recovered.

Three Maoists arrested in Odisha

Three Maoists, including an armed woman, were arrested by security personnel in two separate operations in Odisha’s Koraput district, police said on Sunday.

In a joint operation, a team of BSF and Odisha police today arrested two Maoists, identified as Samuru Miniaka and Dalu Madingi, from a forest area under Naraynpatna police limits, Koraput Superintendent of Police Awinash Kumar said.

CBI raids SSC exam centre, busts hi-tech cheating gang

The gang was busted and seven members of the group, including its two masterminds, were detained after the CBI conducted a raid at an examination centre in Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya near ITO when the SSC examination were on, the agency said.

The CBI on Sunday busted a gang allegedly involved in facilitating cheating in the Combined Graduate Level Examination conducted by Staff Selection Commission by using high-tech gadgets.
