Pakistan to protest US drone attacks at UN

Pakistan will lodge a formal protest in the UN General Assembly session next month over the US drone attacks in the country, an official said.

The US attacks violate Pakistan’s sovereignty and international laws, Sartaj Aziz, adviser on foreign affairs, said in a statement in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, Friday, reported Xinhua.

“A breakthrough is expected on the issue of US drone strikes in the coming months,” he said.

‘Satyagraha’ mints Rs.11.21 crore on opening day

Prakash Jha’s socio-political thriller “Satyagraha” managed to gross Rs.11.21 crore on its opening day. It is said to be the highest ever opening for the filmmaker.

The movie, which features a stellar cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpayee and Amrita Rao, released Friday. Made at a reported budget of Rs.50 crore, the movie is said to be getting a mixed response from critics and viewers.

However, officials at UTV Motion Pictures, are hoping for a good weekend collection.

US drone strike kills four in Pakistan

At least four people were killed in a US drone strike Saturday in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region, media reports said.

The US unmanned aircraft fired two missiles on a house in Moski village, a tribal region bordering Afghanistan, Xinhua reported.

The house was completely destroyed and caught fire after the strike.

Locals rushed to the site and took out four charred bodies from the debris of the building.

The identities of those killed are not known yet.

Call center employee crushed to death by speeding tanker

A 24-year-old call center employee died after a speeding tanker hit his motorcycle in Vijay Nagar area here, police said on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Daman Kumar, who lived with his family in Bharat Nagar area of the district.

The incident took place when Kumar, who worked with a call center situated in Noida Sector 62, was returning home from his office last night.

Kumar suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.

Sonia to launch ‘Zero Landless Project’ in Kerala

Kerala government’s ambitious ‘Zero Landless Project’ aimed at providing land to all landless people in the state by 2015, will be launched by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi here on September 8, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash has said.

In the first phase, title deeds would be distributed to 17,260 identified beneficiaries in six southern districts upto Ernakulam, the minister said in a release here.

Obama, Kerry indicate attack on Syria imminent

Indicating that an attack on Syria is imminent, US President Barack Obama has said that a possible military strike would be limited with “no boots on the ground”.

“We’re not considering any open ended commitment. We’re not considering any boots on the ground approach,” Obama told reporters yesterday but emphasised that he has “not made any decisions” about what actions the US will take.

“We have consulted with allies. We have consulted with Congress,” Obama said after Secretary of State John Kerry indicated that the US is preparing to go it alone on Syria.

SIT to probe Arab national’s marriage with minor

A Special Investigation Team has been constituted by police to probe the case involving an Arab national marrying a minor Muslim girl who was residing in an orphanage here and divorcing her later.

Police said a list of 11 accused, including five officials of the orphanage, had been submitted before the Judicial First Class Magistrate court here.

The case relates to UAE national Jasem Mohammed Abdul Karim Abdulahmed marrying the 17 year-old girl from the orphanage in June last. He left the country in July and divorced her through ‘triple talaq’ over phone.

Court permits Bharathi to stay with Jagan

The CBI Court on Saturday permitted YS Bharathi to stay with her husband and YSRCP President Jagan Mohan Reddy till he stays in hospital.

The orders came following a private memo moved by Bharati on Friday seeking permission to allow her or Vijayamma be with Jagan in the hospital in view of the seriousness of his health condition due to the indefinite fast. While admitting the petition the Special Court posted the case for orders on Saturday.

Old cancer drug may help transplant patients

Scientists have discovered that an old cancer drug can be used to prevent rejection of transplanted tissue.

Researchers at Lund University believe their discovery could lead to new treatments for both transplant patients and those with autoimmune diseases.

“Our group was studying the effects of the old tumour drug Zebularine, developed in the US in the 1960s, and by chance we discovered that it had completely unexpected effects on the immune system,” said Leif Salford, Senior Professor of Neurosurgery at the Rausing Laboratory, Lund University.

Need to end all acts of violence against women: Sonia

Against the backdrop of rising crimes against women, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said making laws for their empowerment is not enough as they will have to be implemented properly on ground.

“We realise that by just making laws and announcing policies would not be enough to empower women. Along with it, policies and laws will have to be implemented properly on ground,” she said while addressing a gathering at the launch of the Ahimsa Messenger scheme, under which volunteers will be created to spread awareness on women’s issues.

Tewari condemns attack on TV journalists by Asaram supporters

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari today condemned the attack on two TV journalists by supporters of self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu in Jodhpur.

“The assault on journalists by a religious preacher’s followers is extremely condemnable and disturbing,” the minister tweeted.

Tewari asked, “Is this what they teach and preach to their flock.”

The supporters of Asaram allegedly attacked a TV reporter and a cameraman at his ashram as the Rajasthan Police headed to Bhopal to interrogate the self-styled godman and make an arrest if he does not provide “concrete” defence.

125 kg explosives seized in Pakistan

Pakistani police have averted a major terror plot by seizing 125 kg of explosives concealed in a car in the federal capital here, officials said.

The explosives were concealed in the gas cylinder and secret compartments of a Suzuki Alto car that was parked in a house in the Bara Kahu area, media reports said.

The non-customs paid Alto was seized yesterday.

A major terror incident has been averted, police said.

The house owner has been arrested and is being interrogated at a police centre, they said, adding that further investigation is on.

Woman killed over dowry in UP

A 32-year-old woman was allegedly killed over dowry in Chaahmir locality under Sadar Kotwali police station area here, police said on Saturday.

Seema Gupta, a teacher in a local school, was found hanging from the ceiling in her house yesterday morning following which her brother Rajiv has lodged a complaint against seven persons, including her husband and father-in-law, SP City Mansingh Chauhan said today.

According to the FIR, Seema’s husband Kishan Gopal had a general merchant shop but was dependant on his wife for running the house because of his limited income.

Asaram Bapu may be arrested, supporters hit mediapersons

A Rajasthan Police team has left to question Asaram Bapu and “then probably arrest him”, said an official Saturday, a day that saw mediapersons being assaulted by the spiritual guru’s supporters in Jodhpur city.

Heavy police force has been deployed in Jodhpur city Saturday following reports that a huge crowd of Asaram Bapu’s followers had gathered at his ashram and some of them attacked media persons who were covering developments in the sexual assault case lodged against the spiritual guru, an official said.

China, Pakistan to boost military ties

Top military leaders of China and Pakistan met here Saturday and pledged to further boost military cooperation between the two countries.

China’s vice chairman of Central Military Commission Xu Qiliang met Khalid Shameem Wynne, chairman of joint chiefs of staff committee of Pakistan, Xinhua reported.

Xu said China and Pakistan are good neighbours, good friends, good partners and good brothers, and the practical military-to-military cooperation will not only benefit the two countries, but also help safeguard peace and stability in the region.

BJP slams Samajwadi statement on Bhatkal

The BJP Saturday criticised the Samajwadi Party (SP) for giving a religious hue to the issue of terrorism, after a party leader said Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal was targeted because he was a Muslim.

SP spokesman Kamaal Farooqui made the statement on Bhatkal in New Delhi Friday.

Bhatkal, wanted by police in 12 states for bombings and other terror activities in the last five years, was arrested from the India-Nepal border Thursday. He was arrested along with Asadullah Akhtar, his terror accomplice.

Government has to take steps to block porn sites: SC

The Supreme Court today made it clear that the government will have to take steps to block porn sites particularly those showing child pornography and granted four weeks time to chart out plan of action.

“Nothing, you have to do it,” a bench headed by Justice B S Chauhan said when Additional Solicitor General K V Viswanathan sought time to file response on a plea for blocking such sites in the country.

On July 12, the apex court had granted four weeks time to the Centre to devise a mechanism to block such sites.
