Mob goes on rampage, burns houses, shops

A group of people returning from a cremation on Wednesday attacked and damaged one dozen houses and shops belonging to members of a particular community at Kawal village, police said.

Several persons were also injured in the disturbance which followed on the heels of a clash in the area yesterday in which three persons were killed.

Police had to step in to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control with the area now having been sealed off as a precautionary measure.

Telangana ministers to hold celebrations in villages

The Congress leaders are gearing up to take total credit for the positive decision on formation of Telangana by the Congress Working Committee.

The Telangana ministers and leaders, who met at the residence of Major Industries Minister Dr J Geetha Reddy here on Wednesday, decided to organised victory meeting (Vijayotsava Sabhalu) across the Telangana region. The meetings will be mostly held in villages where party flags will be hoisted. The Telangana ministers also passed a resolution seeking hastening of process for the formation of Telangana State.

Bharati not allowed to meet Jagan on anniversary

YS Bharati, wife of YSR Congress party president Jagan Mohan Reddy, was denied permission by the Chanchalguda Jail authorities to meet her husband on the occasion of their marriage anniversary here on Wednesday.

According to sources, Bharathi was denied permission as the jail authorities have suspended Jagan’s Mulakaths in view of his indefinite hunger strike which entered fourth day on Wednesday. (INN)

32 persons sent to jail for drunken driving

Different courts have sent as many as 32 persons to jail for driving their vehicles in inebriated condition.

Third Metropolitan Magistrate B Chengalaraya Nayudu convicted 30 people for three days imprisonment each and one person for five days imprisonment for drunken driving. Similarly, Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Shiva Shanker Prasad convicted one person for a period of one day imprisonment for drunken driving.

Mumbai gang-rape victim discharged from hospital

The 23-year-old photojournalist, who was gang-raped at a defunct mill complex here nearly a week ago, has been discharged from hospital after doctors attending on her declared her “medically fit”.

“The patient had improved steadily and our team of doctors specially assigned, had declared the patient medically fit for discharge last evening and hence she was discharged late last night,” said a statement from Jaslok Hospital, where she was admitted after the assault.

Three arrested for teen’s ‘marriage’ to UAE national

Three people were arrested here Wednesday for being party to a “marriage” of a teenager to a UAE national, who deserted her and returned to his country in less than a fortnight.

The arrested include the UAE national’s mother – a local Muslim woman living in the district, her second husband and a cousin of the 17-year-old girl. They have been charged under sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and also for abetting an unlawful marriage.

Police also took a statement from the girl, who said she was misled into the marriage.

Blast in Assam

Suspected Bodo militants triggered a bomb blast on Wednesday in Assam’s Bongaigaon town, but there were no casualties, police said.

The blast took place near the Mayapuri cinema hall around 12 noon.

Preliminary investigation indicated it was a crude bomb attached to a cycle parked in the area. No major damage to property was reported, police said.

Pak to persuade Afghan Taliban to shift office from Qatar

Pakistan will persuade the Afghan Taliban to relocate their political office from Qatar to either Saudi Arabia or Turkey and enter into direct talks with Kabul, a media report today said.

The issue was discussed between Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Afghan President Hamid Karzai during their meetings in last two days, The Express Tribune reported.

The discussions between the two sides were “open and candid” where all issues of mutual interests were discussed, an unnamed senior official was quoted as saying by the paper.

Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn Wednesday denied that his character in the socio-political thriller ‘Satyagraha’ was similar to that of Indian politician and social activist Arvind Kejriwal.

“It`s a fictitious story where the content is somewhere relevant to what is happening in the society today. There is no similarity between my character and that of Arvind Kejriwal. The film is not about one particular person or character,” Ajay, here to promote the film ahead of its release Friday, told reporters.

Nigerian Navy kills six pirates, injures one

An official says Nigeria’s navy killed six pirates and injured one in an attack against the outlaws expanding their territory in the Gulf of Guinea.

Delta state Navy spokesman, Lt Delightsome Yohana, said on Wednesday that pirates engaged the navy in a gun battle late Sunday off the coast of Calabar in Nigerian and Cameroonian waters. He says Nigeria’s navy fired back, killing the pirates. The wounded attacker is in custody.

The operation is the latest in a string of victories for Nigeria’s navy. Yohana said in the last two weeks the navy has killed 18 pirates and arrested five.

UN powers begin talks on Syria resolution

Envoys from Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States started talks on Wednesday on a British drafted UN Security Council resolution that could allow military action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, diplomats said.

The envoys held talks behind closed doors at the UN Security Council offices to discuss the resolution after the suspected use of chemical weapons near Damascus last week in an attack which left hundreds dead.

Britain wants the resolution to allow “all necessary measures to protect civilians,” which could mean military action.

India to replace bursting tank barrels under Rs 1,500 cr deal

Seeking to address the issue of bursting barrels of Army tanks due to ammunition, the government is planning to replace them with canons of T-90 tanks in collaboration with Russia.

T-72 tanks, the mainstay of the Indian armoured fleet, are facing problems with their ammunition as they sometimes bursts in the barrel and 200 such cases have been reported causing concern in the Army.

Treating diabetes early could also help reduce heart disease risk

Two treatments that slow the development of diabetes may also protect people from heart disease, a new study suggests.

Researchers examined the effect that making intensive lifestyle changes or taking the medication metformin had on cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

The study, part of the National Institutes of Health`s Diabetes Prevention Program, found that both treatments induced positive changes in the level of particles that carry cholesterol and triglycerides through the blood stream.

These changes could lower the chances of plaque building up in blood vessels.

Lok Sabha to take up land bill on Thursday

After the passage of the landmark food security bill, the Lok Sabha is Thursday set to debate and pass another key legislation of the UPA government, the land acquisition and rehabilitation bill, government sources said.

“The land acquisition and rehabilitation bill is scheduled to be taken up in the Lok Sabha Thursday,” said a government official.

While the government has moved 165 amendments, the opposition has moved as many as 116 amendments to the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011, which seeks to replace the colonial-era Land Acquisition Act, 1894.

India asks Myanmar to set up joint border working group

India has asked Myanmar to set up a Joint Border Working Group to address the issue of demarcation of border between the two countries in the backdrop of attempt by Myanmarese Army to construct a defence post near an undemarcated border pillar.

Though the proposal to set up JBWG has been there but after the recent incident, India has reiterated the need to set up the group to resolve the issue, official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin said on Wednesday.

He said this was conveyed through India’s Ambassador Gautam Mukhopadhyay.

Health min suggests guidelines for National Ambulance Code

In a bid to have a uniform design and nomenclature for all ambulances, the Health Ministry has suggested to retain design of National Ambulance Service under NRHM while formulating guidelines for National Ambulance Code.

In a letter to Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Health Ministry has suggested that as the design and nomenclature of National Ambulance Service is already implemented by various states, it should be retained while framing ambulance designs under National Ambulance Code.

BJP asks Akhilesh to control wayward party workers

The BJP on Wednesday alleged some SP workers and leaders were bringing shame to Uttar Pradesh with their acts and instead of reining them, the state government was protecting them.

The ruling party should control such wayward activists who were posing a challenge to law and order in the state, BJP chief spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak told reporters here.

“With their acts, the SP men are bringing shame to the state. But, instead of controlling them the machinery of the state government is actually protecting them,” he said.

Arunachal Pradesh school hostel warden held for raping 14 girls

A shocking case of rape of 14 minor girls allegedly by the hostel warden of a private school in Likabai in West Siang district has come to light after a few students reported the matter to police.

The rape of the girls in the age group of 4 to 13 for over three years has triggered protests with local residents, students and members from the civil society hitting the streets last evening to protest against the crime.

They also gheraoed the Likabali Police Station, demanding capital punishment for the culprits.
