Art aids acid attack survivors in Kolkata

To aid survivors of acid attacks, an assemblage of paintings by eminent artists as well as budding painters is on display at a fund-raising exhibition here.

Around 100 works by painters like Wasim Kapoor have been showcased at the “Art With A Heart” exposition organised by the Acid Survivors Foundation India (ASFI) that began Friday.

Four paintings are up for auction, while others are for sale. The proceeds will go to the aid of acid attack survivors.

Action against Asaram if found guilty: Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said Friday strict action will be taken against Asaram if he is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor girl, a charge denied by the spiritual guru who has millions of devotees worldwide.

“Police should not come under any pressure while conducting investigation and it will not happen. Strict action will be taken based on the outcome of the probe,” he told reporters after apprising Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde about the progress in the case.

Ajay Devgn doesn`t talk much about his personal life, but interestingly he opened up about his wife and actress Kajol`s role in his life and credited her for bringing positive changes in him.

Ajay-Kajol tied the knot in 1999 and they have two children – daughter Nysa and son Yug.

Praising his wife and co-star of films like `Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha`, Ajay said: “Because of Kajol, I have become calmer and much secure. So basically, I am happy. As far as work is concerned, we hardly discuss work at home.”

Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn has reunited with his frequent collaborator Prakash Jha in the director`s upcoming `Satyagraha` and hopes the film does as good as their previous ventures.

The 44-year-old actor and Jha have previously worked in films like `Raajneeti`, `Apaharan`, `Gangaajal` and `Dil Kya Kare` and this time the duo are back with a political thriller.

Arab League seek decisive world stand on Syria

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday urged the international community to take a “decisive and serious” stand against the regime of Bashar Assad for massacring Syrian people using chemical and other destructive weapons.
“The rejection of the Syrian regime of all serious and earnest Arab efforts and the horrible massacres he committed against his people … requires a decisive and serious stand by the international community to end the humanitarian tragedy of the Syrian people,” said Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal.

Tribal woman found injured in Bengal, gang rape suspected

A 26-year old tribal woman was found lying injured and unconscious in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district with police suspecting she was “gang-raped”. A person has been arrested, an officer said Wednesday.

The woman was found outside Moraghat forest in Binnaguri town in the district, some 660 km from Kolkata, and is currently recuperating in North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri.

Computer engineer arrested for robbing businessman

Six people, including a computer engineer and two property dealers, were arrested for robbing a businessman, police said Wednesday.

Rashid, 29, Punit, 31, Mohd. Shafiq, 26, Danish, 28, Mahender Yadav, 22, and Ashutosh, 28, were arrested Tuesday from their hideouts here when they were planning to leave the city.

The accused had Aug 22 entered Ashok Kumar Rakian’s house in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash-III and robbed him of jewellery worth lakhs of rupees and Rs.10 lakh in cash at gun point.

Fake Khurshid account tweets on Syria cause flutter

Amid reports of an impending Western military strike on Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons, a fake Twitter account of External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid caused a flutter Wednesday, saying India was in touch with Britain and US over the crisis.

The government complained to the San Francisco-headquartered company and the fake account was blocked within hours.

Seven killed as Afghan Taliban attack NATO base

At least seven Afghans were killed and 58 got wounded, including children, when Taliban hit a NATO base in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province Wednesday, officials said.

“The Taliban armed men targeted the compound of NATO-led forces’ Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) at 4:15 p.m. in Ghazni city. Those killed included four Afghan policemen and three civilians in the suicide bombings and gunfight,” Xinhua reported quoting deputy provincial governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi as saying.

Pakistan plans targeted operation in violence-hit Karachi

The Pakistani government Wednesday hinted a “targeted operation” against the miscreants in the violence-hit port city of Karachi where businesses are now demanding deployment of the army to restore peace.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the government has proposed a targeted operation in Karachi against identified target killers, extortionists and criminals, Xinhua reported.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad Wednesday, the minister said the next meeting of the cabinet would be held in Karachi to discuss the blueprint of the proposed operation.

UAE charity donates clothes to 4,000 Pakistani children

UAE’s primary humanitarian organisation Red Crescent Authority (RCA) Wednesday donated clothes to 4,000 orphaned and underprivileged children in Pakistan’s Lahore city, an RCA official said.

The donation was part of the UAE humanitarian major’s ‘Clothe One Million Children’ programme launched by Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum earlier this year, Hamad Abdullah Al Ali, director of RCA, said.

Iran warns against consequences of attack on Syria

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Wednesday warned of “disastrous” consequences of a possible US attack on Syria, saying that it will be a “catastrophe” for the region, media reported.

The Iranian leader did not elaborate on the impacts of the military intervention on the region but said that the Middle East is like a “powder keg” and its future will be unpredictable if something happens, Xinhua reported citing ISNA news agency.

Khamenei’s remarks were an allusion to the possible US military responses to the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Britain to present resolution on Syria in UNSC

As the US and its western allies prepare for a possible strike against Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons, Britain today said it will present a resolution to the UN Security Council seeking authorisation for military action.

Though it is not yet clear how two permanent members of the Security Council – Russia and China – would respond to the UK-led move backed by the US and France, any resolution seeking UN approval for a military strike is expected to face resistance.

India national escapes noose, jailed for life in Singapore

Indian national Gopinathan Nair Remadevi Bijukumar was today re-sentenced to life imprisonment under Singapore’s amended penal code that saved him from a mandatory death penalty for the murder of a prostitute.

Justice Choo Han Teck also sentenced Gopinathan to 18 strokes of the cane for the murder.

Gopinathan, a 37-year-old former shipyard worker, was found guilty of murdering Filipino prostitute Roselyn Reyes Pascua in her rented room on Bencoolen Street in Singapore’s Central business district in March 2010.

BJP, Left slam government over rupee depreciation

The BJP and the Left Wednesday slammed the government over the rupee’s continued depreciation with the former demanding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation, while the Congress said the situation was serious but not a crisis.

The rupee slipped to 68.75 against the dollar Wednesday.

“The government has lost control over the economy completely … they are helpless. The stock market is in free fall and rupee is in free fall,” said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yashwant Sinha.

Eight-year-old girl raped by cook on school premises

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly repeatedly raped by a 53-year-old cook on the premises of a government-run social welfare school in the district, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Raj Mohammad, allegedly sexually assaulted the student of the Jammikunta-based residential school on Aug. 16 and continued the violations over the next four days, said Circle Inspector Dasari Bhoomaiah.

The girl’s parents learnt of the matter when they took her to a local hospital after she was taken ill. They later filed a complaint against Mohammad after doctors confirmed rape.
