Nearly 13,000 women raped in Assam in 8 years

Nearly 13,000 women have been raped in the last eight years in Assam, official sources said.

State Home Department officials said 12,857 women were raped between 2005 and May 2013 and 59 of them were killed after rape.

Of the 8,181 cases filed against rape, 76 per cent of them were acted upon with 12,216 people arrested for committing the crime, the officials said.

Simon Cowell expecting first child with friend’s wife?

Media mogul Simon Cowell is reportedly expecting a baby with New York socialite Lauren Silverman.

Silverman, 36, who is going through a divorce with Cowell’s close friend Andrew Silverman, is a real estate agent in NYC.

She is said to be leaving her estranged husband to be with Cowell, the father of her child, reported Us magazine.

“She’s around 10 weeks along. Lauren and Andrew have been unhappy in their marriage for some time, and their divorce has been in the works for a while. As their marriage deteriorated, she and Simon became close,” a source said.

US man sentenced to 165 years for child sex tourism offenses

An American national has been sentenced to 165 years of imprisonment followed by a lifetime of supervised release for child sex tourism offenses.

Matthew Andrew Carter, 68, aka “William Charles Harcourt” and “Bill Carter,” was sentenced by US District Judge Joan A Lenard of the Southern District of Florida yesterday.
The sentencing follows after a jury in February found him guilty of five counts of traveling in foreign commerce from the US to Haiti for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with children and one count of attempting to do so.

Bodh Gaya temple dome to be inlaid with gold

The dome of Bodh Gaya’s 1,500-year old Mahabodhi temple, Buddhism’s holiest shrine that was rocked by a string of bombings in July, will be inlaid with gold thanks to an offer made by a pilgrim, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said Thursday.

“The ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) has accepted the proposal of a Buddhist pilgrim with certain terms and condition to decorate the Mahabodhi temple’s dome with gold,” Nitish Kumar told reporters here.

After the serial blasts last month, ASI confirmed that no damage had been detected in the temple’s structure.

TRS suspends MP Vijayashanti

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party in Andhra Pradesh has suspended Member of Parliament M. Vijayashanti for “anti-party activities” amid reports that she planned to join the Congress.

TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao announced her suspension late Wednesday night after the politburo took a decision.

Vijayashanti was also served a show-cause notice, asking her to explain why the party should not expel her for “anti-party activities”.

Iran technocrats to dominate Rowhani cabinet

President-elect Hassan Rowhani is expected to announce a cabinet of experienced technocrats seen as close to his mentor, former Iranian head of state Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Rowhani, 64, officially assumes power as Iran’s highest elected office at a ceremony on Saturday. He will receive the formal endorsement of the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following his surprise election triumph in June.

Kids’ squabble over kite leads to sectarian violence in Allahabad

Children of different communities squabbled over a kite-flying incident, sparking violence in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh late Wednesday, as people of the two communities pelted stones and hurled crude bombs at each other, police said.

The fracas started in the Rajrupur area of Dhoomanganj in Allahabad, after youngsters from a community had a spat with children of another community over a kite. Enraged elders soon indulged in violence and pelted stones at each other.

Over a dozen people sustained injuries.

No brokering on Kashmir: US

As Secretary of State John Kerry flew into Pakistan, American officials said the US was very supportive of recent moves by India and Pakistan to normalise relations, but there was no change in its hands off Kashmir policy.

“There’s no change in policy in terms of where we are on that,” a senior administration official accompanying Kerry told reporters on way to Islamabad Thursday when asked if he expected to have a conversation about Kashmir with the Pakistani Government.

Caste, crime, cash fuel Uttar Pradesh politics: Ajit Singh

Taking a swipe at former chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Rashtriya Lok Dal president and union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said that Mulayam Singh, Mayawati and Kalyan Singh were responsible for the state’s backwardness.

The union minister was speaking at the two-day open session of the state unit of the Rashtriya Lok Dal Wednesday evening. He criticised the caste conferences organised by Mayawati and Mulayam Singh, and said politics in Uttar Pradesh had long been fuelled by caste, crime and cash.

Investigate gurdwara attack as hate crime: Congressman

Condemning the vandalism at a Sikh gurdwara in Riverside, California as “reprehensible”, an influential US lawmaker has urged officials to investigate the incident as a possible hate crime and send a powerful message against such attacks.

“I am deeply troubled by the events that took place on Tuesday at the Sikh Gurdwara in Riverside,” said House member Joe Crowley, vice chair of the House Democratic caucus referring to some unidentified individuals spray painting the word “terrist!” on the gurdwara walls.

Narasimha Rao’s eldest son passes away

Former Andhra Pradesh minister and late prime minister P V Narasimha Rao’s eldest son P V Rangarao has passed away here today.

He was 73.

Rangarao, a bachelor, died of a heart related ailment.

According to sources in his family, he went to a hospital last evening and had come back after a check-up, but developed complications and passed away in the wee hours.

He had undergone a cardiac related surgery around 20 years back, sources said.

Rangarao had served as the state education minister when Kotleya Vijay Bhaskar was the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in the 90s.

Pork, horse meat found in canned products in Bahrain

Bahrain’s health ministry has removed from market scores of canned meat products after a probe revealed they were “contaminated” with horse meat and pork.

The ministry earlier launched an investigation to collect samples of meat from the local markets, which were tested at its laboratories, Xinhua reported.

After testing 172 products, including minced meat, burgers and frozen meat, the ministry said it found horse meat and pork mixed with beef in several canned products.

End Islamist sit-ins, Egypt cabinet tells minister

Egypt’s cabinet has tasked the interior minister to take necessary action to end sit-ins by Islamists and deal with any threats against national security, state media reported.

In a televised statement, Information Minister Doriah Sharaf el-Din said the “dangerous situation” at Rabaa Al Adawiya Square in Cairo and at al-Nahda Square in Giza, where Islamists were holding protests, were a threat to national security and citizens.

“The cabinet has decided to take all measures to confront these risks and put an end to them. Violence is no longer acceptable,” Xinhua quoted el-Din as saying.

Mamata rules out Bengal’s division, Darjeeling on the boil

Slamming the Congress on Telangana, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday ruled out division of her state, even as life in the Darjeeling Hills remained paralysed for the third day in response to a shutdown called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) demanding the creation of ‘Gorkhaland’.

A day after the Congress Working Committee and the United Progressive Alliance approved the carving out of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, the GJM announced it will call on union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to press for the creation of a separate state of ‘Gorkhaland’ in north Bengal.

Congress may form Govt. in Andhra and Telangana States

Congress is exploring to form its Govt. in the proposed two States of Andhra and Telangana. The present strength of A.P. Assembly is 294. In the event of bifurcation, Telangana Assembly will get 119 MLA’s whereas Andhra will get 179 MLA’s. In order to form a Govt., any party would need the support of 60 MLA’s where as in Andhra it requires 88 MLA’s. In Seema Andhra area Congress has 97 MLA’s, which is more than the simple majority. In Telangana, Congress has only 49 MLA’s, it needs the support of 11 more members.

Seema-Andhra leaders fight for State capital

Seema-Andhra leaders are divided on the issue of selection of Capital for the new State. Leaders of Costal Andhra are trying their level best to keep Rayalaseema leaders with them. Seema-Andhra leaders convened a meeting to consider finalizing State Capital but Rayalaseema leader did not attend this meeting. They convened another meeting separately. They said that they have no confidence in Costal Andhra leader. Their contention is that after the bifurcation of Andhra from Madras State, Kurnool was made the Capital, however, they agreed for Hyderabad as Capital sacrificing Kurnool.

Telangana Bill will be presented in Parliament soon- Ghulam Nabi Azad

Union Health Minister, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad told that Telangana Bill would be presented in the Parliament in the Monsoon Session. If it is not possible to do so, a special session of Parliament will be convened to pass Telangana Bill.

A deputation of Congress leaders of Telangana met Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad and thanked him for the support he extended for the formation of separate Telangana State.
