Probe against corruption can still be done despite RTI Act amendment: Gadkari

Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Gadkari on Friday supported the Union Cabinet’s decision to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act in the matter of granting immunity to political parties.

“Political parties don’t function on the government’s money. The prospect of bringing political parties under RTI was, therefore, not viable. The bill that will be brought into parliament is fine. The places in which the government grants go, where money goes from the budget, the RTI is fine there,” Gadkari said here.

Accept CWC decision to form Telangana and maintain peace, Digvijay Singh tells united Andhra leaders

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Friday urged united Andhra leaders to main peace and accept the Congress Working Committee’s (CWC) decision for the creation of a separate Telangana state.

“I urge upon them (ministers supporting united Andhra) to maintain peace and calm. Whatever the issues they have, we will try to address them,” Singh told media here.

US ‘extremely disappointed’ with Russia over Snowden asylum

Expressing “extreme disappointment” on Russia’s decision to give temporary asylum to Edward Snowden, the US has said that it is evaluating its ties with the country now.

“We are extremely disappointed that the Russian government would take this step despite our very clear and lawful requests in public and in private to have Snowden expelled to the US to face the charges against him,” said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

Snowden, an ex-CIA contractor, has leaked National Security Agency’s secret telephone and Internet surveillance programme.

New telecom unified licences by tomorrow, M&A by Sept

The long awaited telecom ‘Unified Licences’, which aims to free players from limitations on use of technology for services and allow them to take benefits under the new sectoral policy, will be in place by tomorrow.

“File has come to me and I have to sign it,” Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said on sidelines of National Telecom Summit organised by industry body CII.

Moderate-intensity quake hits parts of northern India

A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh this morning.

There were no immediate reports of any loss of life or serious damage. The quake, the epicentre of which was in Kishtwar, hit Doda and Kishtwar districts around 8.03 AM and lasted for 7 seconds, a senior Met officials said, adding, that the aftershocks were felt, measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale, around 8.05 AM.

US Senate confirms Dempsey as Joint Chiefs Chairman

The US Senate has approved the nomination of General Martin Dempsey for a second two-year term as Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Senate confirmed Dempsey to the post by a voice vote and also approved the nomination of Admiral Sandy Winnefeld to the post of Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“I would like to congratulate General Martin Dempsey and Admiral Sandy Winnefeld on their Senate confirmation to second terms as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,” US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said after their confirmation.

US, China held frank talks over human rights issues: official

The US and China held in-depth and frank discussions on human rights issues during the recently concluded dialogue between the two countries, a State Department official has said.

“The two sides held in-depth and frank discussions on the rule of law, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of association, and other human rights issues, including specific cases of concern,” State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said.

Jack White’s former wife, Karen Olsen, has filed restraining order against the rocker citing harassment and bullying.

The former White Stripes rocker is accused of harassing Olsen, mother of his two children, and pressuring her about the settlement terms for divorce, reported Aceshowbiz.

“Wife fears for her and the children’s safety as a result of this harassment. This pattern of husband’s bullying wife into submission was a contributing factor in the demise of their marriage,” stated the British model’s restraining order filing.

SP leader Narinder Bhati has landed in a controversy after a video purportedly showed him as claiming that he had got UP IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, who clamped down on the mining mafia, transferred in “41 minutes”.

The claim was made by Bhati while addressing a rally in Gautam Budh Nagar, two days after he denied his involvement in the suspension of the 28-year-old officer.

2G: SC notice to Sanjay Chandra on CBI plea to cancel his bail

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear CBI’s plea for cancellation of bail granted to Sanjay Chandra, MD of Unitech Ltd, in 2G case for allegedly trying to “sabotage the trial” and issued notice to him.

A bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi granted two weeks time to Chandra to file his response on CBI’s petition alleging that he had misused the relief given to him by approaching the then CBI prosecutor A K Singh and trying to “materially interfere” with the prosecution in an “attempt to influence” the conduct and outcome of the trial.

One killed in cloudburst in Kishtwar, govt properties damaged

One person was swept away and several private and government properties were damaged due to a cloudburst triggered by heavy rains in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.

A cloudburst struck Gratnar Sigdi village in the Chatroo tehsil, 40 km from here, in which the victim, identified as Thaker Das, was washed away by the flood waters, police said.

Around eight km of road was also swept away, while several public and private properties were damaged due to the incident, they said.

“Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” tax free in UP

The Uttar Pradesh government today decided to exempt Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directed Milkha Singh biopic “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” and a children’s film from entertainment tax for a limited period.

The decision was taken during the cabinet meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav held here.

The cabinet approved a proposal to exempt “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” from entertainment tax in two installments or for a maximum period of two months.

It also decided to exempt from tax children film “Two Little Indians” for a period of three months.

U’khand submits Rs 60.70 cr conservation proposal to Centre

Uttarakhand government today submitted a proposal worth Rs 60.70 crore to the Centre for soil and water conservation efforts in the disaster affected areas of the state.

The proposal was submitted by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi, an official release here said.

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy has instituted insurance and medical claim for full-time magicians including street performers in the state.

Academy Chairman Soorya Krishnamoorthy told reporters here today that magicians were one of the most unorganised sections of artists in the state and many of them were striving hard to make both ends meet in the twilight of their life.

“We have decided to institute medical claim and insurance for all magicians along with the artists of theatre, circus and ‘kathaprasangam’ (story telling) in the state,” he said.

Girl with giant head syndrome gets new lease of life

A 21-month-old Tripura girl who has undergone a surgery at a Gurgaon-based private hospital for a rare genetic condition, which caused her head to swell to almost double its size, is now fine and ready to travel back to her hometown, doctors said.

The girl, Baby Roona, was admitted at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) on May 15 with the rare disorder called Hydrocephalus that caused her head to swell to 94 cm. She had a thin chance of survival.

Shobhaa De’s comments frivolous; Maha will stay united: Chavan

Rupee bounces back from 60.90 as RBI steps in, ends at 60.43

After slumping to 60.90 levels in early trade, the rupee today managed to recoup most losses to end almost flat at 60.43 against the US dollar on suspected RBI intervention and stricter hedging rules for FIIs.

The dollar strengthened overseas after the US Federal Reserve gave no indication of withdrawing its bond-buying plan and US GDP growth figures were better than expected.

No Telangana bill in monsoon session;new state in 6 months: HM

The Centre today ruled out introducing the bill for creation of Telangana in the coming monsoon session of Parliament but said the new state will come into existence in six months.

“No, not in this session. I do not think it will come so soon. May be, by next session,” he said at a press conference here while replying to a question on the possibility of government bringing the Telangana bill in the coming session of Parliament beginning Monday.

Earlier in the day, BJP demanded that the bill be placed in the monsoon session.

Bengal Sikhs to commemorate Kamagata Maru incident

Sikhs in West Bengal are planning to commemorate the centenary year of the killing of passengers of Kamagata Maru ship at the Budge Budge Port in Kolkata on September 29, 1914.

Mumbai warned of stormy weather, heavy rain

Stormy weather accompanied by heavy to very heavy rain is likely to disrupt Mumbai, coastal Konkan region, northern parts of the state and surrounding areas in the next couple of days, the met office here warned Friday.

In a special bulletin, the India Meterological Department (IMD) said that besides these areas, north-central Maharashtra and south Gujarat were also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rain in the next 48 hours.

Blast inside bakery targets non-Manipuri persons

A powerful bomb exploded inside a bakery owned by a non-Manipuri person in Imphal West district but no one was injured, police said on Friday.

Some unidentified persons hurled the bomb at the bakery at Kangjabi Leirak near here at around 8.30 pm Thursday night when seven persons, all non-Manipuri men, were working inside it.

No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This was the fourth attack on non-Manipuri persons in Manipur this year, the sources said.

Earthquake rocks Jammu region, tremors felt in Himachal, Punjab

A moderate intensity earthquake rocked the Jammu region on Friday morning, triggering panic among the people.

According to initial reports, the epicentre of the earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale was 13 km south east of Kishtwar.

The tremors of the earthquake, which jolted the Jammu region around 8.02 am, were felt in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

There was no immediate report of any casualty or injury from anywhere.

However, most of the people rushed out of their houses due to fear.
