One killed, four injured after woman rams car into bike in Mumbai

A biker was killed and four others were injured today when a speeding car, driven by a woman, hit a motorcycle and two auto-rickshaws in suburban Kandivali, police said. The woman, identified as Sakshi Parekh, is a housewife. She also suffered injuries in the incident and has been arrested.

The mishap occurred at about 11 AM at Mahavir Nagar in suburban Kandivali when her Honda City car rammed into a motorcycle and then a road divider before dashing two auto-rickshaws, coming from opposite direction, they said.

Guerrilla killed as army foils another infiltration bid

A guerrilla was killed Friday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district as the army foiled another infiltration bid from across the Line of Control (LOC), officials said.

“Army foiled an infiltration bid and killed one militant while seriously injuring the other on the LOC in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara,” a defence spokesman said.

He said that based on inputs regarding movement of militants in the area, troops in Tangdhar were on alert and detected movement of two militants on the Indian side of the boundary dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

Gang of robbers busted in Delhi

Six members of a gang who used to offer travellers soft drinks laced with sedatives before robbing them of their belongings have been arrested in the national capital, police said Friday.

One of the gang members, Asaru, was arrested July 19, while his associates Asif, Mohmmad Shahid, Nooruddin, Muzahir and Mohammad Najir – all residents of Kishanganj in Bihar – were arrested July 28 from Delhi’s Anand Vihar area.

US issues worldwide travel alert over threat from al-Qaeda

The US today issued a worldwide travel alert for its citizens, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, because of an al-Qaida terrorist threat.

“Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organisations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August,” the State Department said in a statement.

US prosecutor drops case against Saudi national

Charges against a Saudi national accused of paying his roommate to kill a bar owner were dropped today after information from a critical witness changed, leaving the state with insufficient evidence to prosecute him.

Ziyad Abid, 24, has been jailed since September 5 on first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges. His case gained national attention when Judge Michael Wagner refused to release him after the Saudi Arabian government posted USD 2 million bail.

Unidentified persons open fire at hotel owner

Two unidentified persons opened fire at a hotel owner damaging the window pane of his car at Mannagudda near here today, police said.

The hotel owner, Vijayendra Bhat, was driving his car when the two men riding a motorcycle fired at him and the bullet smashed the window pane of the vehicle.

Fearing further attack, Vijayendra ran into the hotel but the two fled from the spot.

It is said that three days ago Vijayendra had allegedly received a call from an underworld don demanding ‘hafta’ (protection money) but he had ignored it.

A case has been registered, police said.

Warning had been issued before Uttarakhand flood: IMD chief

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued advance warnings predicting extreme weather conditions in Uttarakhand before the flash-floods in June, its chief said here today.

Denying allegation that the department had failed to predict extreme weather conditions in Uttarakhand, Director General of IMD Dr L S Rathore said, “Early warnings had been issued about the approaching heavy rains in the hilly region.”

Egypt’s ElBaradei calls for talks with Brotherhood

UN names former Bulgarian FM Mladenov as Iraq envoy

The United Nations today named former Bulgarian foreign minister Nickolay Mladenov as its new special envoy in Iraq as the country confronts a new surge in violence.

The appointment was announced the day after the United Nations said more than 1,000 people were killed in Iraq in July making it the country’s bloodiest month since 2008.

Mladenov “will be turning his attention to that” as other envoys to Iraq have had to, said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky.

Roadways bus accident: Two bodies recovered in Khanouri area

Two bodies which were reportedly of two passengers, who were boarded in ill-fated bus which fell into Bhakra Canal two days ago, recovered from Khanouri area today.

The body of Ram Narayan, a carpenter who hailed from Darbhanga (Bihar), was recovered along with the other unidentified body, Sirhind SHO S S Virk said.

Efforts are on to identify him, he said.

On Wednesday, two passengers were killed and at least 42 feared drowned after a Punjab roadways bus fell into a canal near Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab in the wee hours, police said.

Maoists blow up rail track in Bihar’s Gaya, trains standed

Maoists blew up a railway track near here late tonight, disrupting traffic on the Gaya-Mugalsari route of East Central Railway.

The explosion on the track between Taraiya and Guraru railway station occurred at around 11 PM, barely 20 minutes after the pilot engine of Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani train crossed the area, Gaya Railway DSP Sunil Kumar told PTI.

There were no casualties.

There is usually a gap of one hour between the pilot engine and the train which follows it. Following the blast, the Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani train was stopped at Taraiya station.

US jury gives life sentence to Somali pirates

Three convicted Somali pirates dodged the death penalty today when a US jury sentenced them to life in prison for the high-seas murder of four Americans on a yacht in the Indian Ocean.

Federal prosecutors had sought the death penalty for Ahmed Muse Salad, Abukar Osman Beyle and Shani Nurani Shiekh Abrar for the February 2011 shooting deaths aboard the 58-foot sloop Quest.

Its owners Scott Adam, 70, and Jean Adam, 66, both retirees from the Los Angeles suburb of Marina del Rey, had set off from New Zealand to fulfill a lifelong dream of sailing around the world.

Morsi supporters stage defiant protest rallies in Egypt

Defaint supporters of Egypt’s deposed president Mohammed Morsi today staged defiant protest rallies against his removal, with police firing teargas at demonstrators, amidst raising fears of renewed violence as the interim government authorised police to disperse them.

Clashes erupted as police tried to disperse demonstrators approaching a media complex, where most privately-owned Egyptian channels are based, to protest what they described as media bias. The protesters chanted against media figures as well as against the police and army.

Suspended Dasna prison jailer reinstated

Suspended Dasna prison jailer O P Katiyar has been reinstated, a senior official said today.

Katiyar was suspended on charges of laxity after a man arrested in an alleged dowry death case escaped from the high-security prison through the toilet window in July.

The accused was rearrested on Sunday by a search team.

Jail Superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma said that Katiyar’s suspension was revoked after a report was sent by jail authorities.

He was reinstated on Thursday, he said.
