All officials safe: MEA on Afghanistan blast

All officials are safe, said the external affairs ministry Saturday following a blast near the Indian consulate in Jalalabad in Afghanistan.

The ministry is in touch with the officials.

“Explosion in front of India’s Consulate in Jalalabad. MEA in touch with officials. All officials are safe,” tweeted Syed Akbaruddin, official spokesperson, ministry of external affairs.

8 die in blast near Indian consulate in Afghanistan

At least eight Afghan civilians were killed and 22 wounded Saturday when a suicide bomber blew up a car packed with explosives near the Indian consulate in Afghanistan’s Jalalabad city, police said. The Indian officials are safe.

The deafening explosion took place at around 10 a.m. about 50 meters away from the consulate in the city, 120 km east of the Afghan capital Kabul, provincial police chief Sharifullah Amin told Xinhua.

(Siasat News): A man was brutally murdered at Hayathnagar and later the killers tried to burn the dead body. Hayathnagar police is busy in ascertaining the identity of the deceased.

The dead body was found near survey No. 34. It is also said that the killers had tried to burn the bodies with the help of kerosene and petrol in a deserted area at Kuvadipally.

Maoists blow up train track

Maoists blew up a railway track near here, forcing stoppage of many prominent trains, including three Rajdhanis, in the late night hours.

The explosion on the track between Taraiya and Guraru railway stations occurred at around 11 PM last night, barely 20 minutes after the pilot engine of Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani train crossed the area, Gaya Railway DSP Sunil Kumar said.

US to track hate crimes against Sikhs, minorities

Ahead of Monday’s anniversary of the Oak Creek gurdwara tragedy, the US Justice Department announced it will begin tracking crimes committed against Sikhs and six other groups as hate crimes.

Making the Announcement Friday Attorney general Eric Holder said the Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller had approved a recommendation from the agency’s advisory policy board to track hate crimes against Sikhs, Hindus, Arabs, Buddhists, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Orthodox Christians.

Maoists blast railway track to enforce Bihar shutdown

Maoists blew up a railway track in Bihar’s Gaya district to enforce a day-long strike called by them to protest the killing of two of their top-ranking leaders by a rival Maoist outfit, a railway official said Saturday.

Two Maoist leaders were killed by the Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), a rival group of the Maoists, after they were abducted from Kothi village in Gaya last Tuesday.

“Maoists blew up a track between Taraiya and Guraru railway stations in Gaya late Friday night,” said ECR’s Chief Public Relations Officer Amitabh Prabhakar.

Taiwan on high alert over rabies outbreak

Taiwan has been put on high alert for rabies after 22 infections were reported on the island, and the virus jumped from infected ferret-badgers to an Asian house shrew, officials said.

Taiwan started reporting rabies cases last month. Prior to the outbreak, Taiwan had been rabies-free since 1959. No humans or dogs have yet been reported infected in the current outbreak.

A case of rabies was found in a ferret-badger in Taichung, bringing the total number of confirmed rabies cases to 22 on the island, including one case of an infected Asian house shrew, Xinhua reported.

2 youths killed by speeding truck

Two youths were crushed to death when a speeding truck rammed into their motorcycle sparking protest in medical area on Meerut-Garh road on Friday.

Pramod and Sanjay, both aged nearly 25 years, were critically injured in the accident. They were taken to hospital where doctors declared them dead, police said.

Police have arrested the driver and impounded the truck.

Court rejects CBI plea to send IPS officer PP Pandey in judicial custody

A CBI court in Ahmedabad on Wednesday rejected an application of the Central Bureau of Investigation seeking judicial custody of Additional DGP PP Pandey in the Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case.

The Gujarat High Court had yesterday restrained the central investigation agency from arresting Pandey till August 6 and also directed the Special CBI judge, Court No 2 to hear afresh the anticipatory bail application of Pandey.

It also asked Pandey to remain present before ACJM everyday till August 6.

Telangana fallout: AP CM to meet anti-Telangana MLAs today

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Reddy will meet state party legislators on Saturday who are protesting against the formation of separate Telangana state.

Another moderate intensity quake jolts J-K

A moderate intensity earthquake, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar and Doda districts and parts of the Valley today, a day after a similar quake hit the region.

The quake, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, hit the area around 3.08am today, Met officials said.

The quake lasted for 9 seconds, and was followed by two aftershocks measuring 3.7 and 2.9 on the Richter Scale at 4.12am and 3.12am today respectively, they said.

China, US hold dialogue on human rights

China and the US have held discussions on human rights, the Chinese foreign ministry said.

The talks were held in Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan province, Xinhua reported.

The Chinese delegation was headed by a foreign ministry official and the US team was led by a State Department official, the ministry said.

US to close missions in UAE as ‘precautionary step’

The US embassy in Abu Dhabi has said its office and the consulate general in Dubai will be closed Aug 4 as a “precautionary step” based on security concerns and instructions of the US State Department.

The embassy and the general consulate to the UAE will be shut down coming Sunday along with US diplomatic and administrative missions in a number of other countries including Jordan, Libya, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Israel for security concerns, Xinhua reported citing an embassy statement.

Congress defends decision to amend RTI Act

The Congress Friday defended the cabinet’s decision to amend the RTI Act to keep political parties out of its ambit, saying no action against the CIC order would result in a clash between the body implementing the transparency law and the poll panel.

“There would be a clash between the CIC and the Election Commission if (the CIC order) is allowed,” Congress spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das told reporters.

“While the EC is a constitutional body, the CIC is not,” he said adding that the poll panel was monitoring the activities of political parties.

13-year-old held for murder of two kids in Greece

A 13-year old uncle of two children has been arrested in Greece after the kids were found drowned in an irrigation channel, police said.

The bodies of the two brothers from Bulgaria – aged four and seven – were found on the outskirts of Strefi village in the Peloponnese peninsula, about 350 km west of Athens, Xinhua reported.

The two children were sent by their mother to deliver a package of food to relatives, police said.

Doctor held in China for infant trafficking

A woman gynaecologist has been detained in northwest China’s Shaanxi province on suspicion of infant trafficking, police said.

The gynaecologist, surnamed Zhang, from Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital allegedly sold a newborn July 17 to a man and woman from Shanxi province for 21,600 yuan (around $3,500), Xinhua cited the public security bureau as saying.

Police said Zhang lied to the mother of the baby born July 16. He told the mother that her child had a congenital infectious disease and disability, and then tricked the woman into letting her handle the baby.

Dead lizard found in midday meal

A dead lizard was found in the mid-day meal for the second time in a week, at a primary school at Hinjili in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Friday, officials said. The meal was not served after the lizard was detected at the Regedi Primary School at Hinjili, Block Development Officer (BDO), Subhransu Mishra said. Over 120 students were given biscuits instead, he said.

Months after his meeting with the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi a US lawmaker praised his “honest, transparent and open” governance, which he said is attracting American companies to invest heavily in the state.

“During a meeting with the leadership of companies like Ford and Tata Motors who are investing billions in new factories in Gujarat I was impressed to learn that these policies are being implemented in good faith and with the cooperation of American companies,” Republican Congressman Aaron Schock said to a magazine.

Tuition teacher arrested for raping a 17-year-old girl

A 17-year-old class 11 student was raped by her tuition teacher in Delhi on Friday morning, said police. The teacher has been arrested. The incident was reported from Mundka area in west Delhi.

The girl had gone to attend tuition classes at the house of accused Joginder Sharma, 45, who raped her. On returning home, the girl informed her family members who approached police and the accused was arrested after a medical report confirmed rape.

“The accused used to take tuition classes at a rented accommodation,” said a police officer.

Tropical storm Jebi hits China

Tropical storm Jebi landed in south China’s island province of Hainan Friday evening, bringing intense rain and strong gales that grounded flights and halted maritime traffic.

The ninth tropical storm to hit China this year, Jebi made landfall in Longlou township in Wenchang at 7.30 p.m., packing winds of up to 117 km per hour near its centre, Xinhua cited meteorological officials as saying.

Many parts of the island reported heavy rain, including the capital city of Haikou, where many roads were waterlogged.

Snowden ‘safe and fine’, says lawyer

Former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden was safe and felt fine after leaving the transit zone of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, his lawyer said.

“He has reached his location. He feels fine and is completely safe,” Xinhua quoted lawyer Anatoly Kucherena as telling Interfax news agency.

On Thursday, Snowden was granted a one-year permit to stay in Russia following a month-long confinement in the airport’s transit area.

An official invitation will also be sent to Edward’s father Lon Snowden to come to Moscow, Kucherena said Friday.
