PM asks Opposition to cooperate

Lamenting that lot of time has been wasted in the last two to three Parliament sessions, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked the opposition to cooperate in the passage of the legislative business including the “most important” ordinance on Food security bill.

Promising to discuss all issues raised by the Opposition, Singh hoped that the nearly month-long Monsoon session starting Monday will be “very constructive and productive”.

China Radio International’s Tamil service completes 50 years

The Tamil service of the state-run China Radio International (CRI) today celebrated its golden jubilee here, marking 50 years of uninterrupted broadcasting to various parts of the world besides India and Sri Lanka.

CRI previously known as Radio Peking, broadcasts in about 56 languages including Hindi, Bengali and Urdu besides Tamil and English every day.

The CRI Tamil service was founded in Aug 1, 1963 and has expanded its operations on a multimedia communication platform with a mixture of shortwave broadcasting service, FM service, website, mobile and magazine services.

Gold, silver rebound on low-level buying, firm global cues

Snapping its two-day falling trend, both the precious metals – gold and silver prices rebounded in the national capital today on emergence of buying at existing lower levels amid a firm global trend.

After falling Rs 850 in last two sessions, gold surged by Rs 450 to Rs 28,800 per 10 grams. Silver rose by Rs 1,000 to Rs 42,100 per kg, reducing two days losses of Rs 1,160 on emergence of buying by industrial units and coin makers.

Traders said emergence of buying by stockists at existing lower levels amid a firm global trend mainly led an recovery in both the precious metals.

Simple ultrasound therapy can prevent acute kidney injury post surgery

A simple and non-invasive ultrasound-based therapy might prevent acute kidney injury that commonly arises after major surgery, a new study has revealed.

Mark Okusa, MD, Joseph Gigliotti, PhD, University of Virginia, and their colleagues found that a drug-free, noninvasive, ultrasound-based treatment could prevent acute kidney injury in mice.

When they exposed anesthetized mice to ultrasound with a routine clinical imaging system 24 hours prior to blood disruption to the kidneys, the mice exhibited preserved kidney health after blood flow was restored.

NIA arrests SIMI cadre

NIA has arrested an operative of the banned SIMI, Abdul Sathar, in connection with a 2010 probe in the unlawful training of SIMI cadres in Kerala.

Sathar was arrested by the agency yesterday from the national capital, sources said.

The case pertained to the unlawful training of the members of the banned cadre and Sathar, according to sources, was allegedly a middle-rung operative of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and was declared a proclaimed offender by the probe agency in this case.

An INTERPOL notice was already out against him.

Mishra equals record, India bowl out Zimbabwe for 163

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra notched up a career-best six-wicket haul as Indian bowlers once again ripped through Zimbabwe, dismissing them for a paltry 163 in the fifth and final cricket one-dayer between the two sides here today.

Man forced to eat dog’s excreta

A man was allegedly tortured and forced to eat dog excreta by eight of his relatives on the suspicion of practising witchcraft at Mawutieng in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, police said today.

Halorsing Kharumnuid (47) suffered the brutality before he was let off with warnings two days ago, East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkrang said.

Seven of the eight accused were arrested this morning.

Actress Tamannaah Bhatia was Friday mobbed by anti-Telangana activists here and was asked to comment on the separation of the state. However, the actress refused to oblige.

“She was on her way to the sets of Ajith Kumar`s upcoming Tamil film. Her car was stopped while she was heading towards Odisha from Vizag (Vishakhapatnam) by a group of anti-Telangana activists and was asked to chant slogan in favour of Andhra Pradesh,” a source from the film`s unit told reporters.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan`s much-awaited `Chennai Express` is lined up for a strong release in non-traditional international markets. In Peru, it is said to be the first Hindi film to release on the same day as it hits theatres in India Aug 9.

Few takers for 4G services yet: Study

People who are aware of the latest 4G internet service that gives consistently faster and more reliable service for video and music streaming, mobile gaming, and sending emails with large attachments have no plans to shift from their current service, a new study has revealed.

According to an Ofcom report, just under a quarter of UK smartphone users do not want to sign up for 4G even when they are aware of the existence of the mobile data services, BBC reports.

Forest officials reunite leopard cubs with their mother

A team of forest officials rescued a one-and-half-month-old leopard cub, which had fallen in a well of a farm in Una area in Junagadh district, and succeeded in reuniting it with its mother, a senior official said friday.

The feline had fallen into a well last night behind the Goddess Ambaji temple on the Delvada road area in the district, deputy conservator of forests Anshuman Sharma told PTI

“The leopard cub was trapped alive inside a well. As soon as we received the information, our team rushed to the site and rescued it safely with the help of a rope,” Sharma said.

Curiosity rover nearing 1st anniversary on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover will complete a year on Mars next week.

It has already achieved its main science goal of revealing that ancient Mars could have supported life.

The mobile laboratory also is guiding designs for future planetary missions.

“Successes of our Curiosity-that dramatic touchdown a year ago and the science findings since then-advance us toward further exploration, including sending humans to an asteroid and Mars,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, said.

“Wheel tracks now, will lead to boot prints later,” he said.

US economy recovering from worst downturn: White House

The US economy is recovering from the worst downturn, the White House said Friday as the latest figures indicated that the unemployment rate has dropped to 7.4 percent, the lowest level since December 2008.

“While more work remains to be done, Friday’s employment report provides further confirmation that the US economy is continuing to recover from the worst downturn since the Great Depression,” Alan B Krueger, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers to US President Barack Obama said.

Vodafone may have to sell $1 bn Bharti stake under licence rules

Vodafone Group Plc may be forced to sell its 4.4 percent stake in India’s top telecom services provider Bharti Airtel Ltd- worth about USD 1 billion – after rules published on Friday outlawed crossholdings in rival telecom companies.

Under the rules, no carrier can own a direct or indirect equity stake in another operating in the same of any of India’s 22 telecom service areas. Bharti and Vodafone provide services in all of them.

Emirates denies SpiceJet stake buy reports

Dubai-based Emirates Airline has termed reports that it is holding discussions with Indian carrier SpiceJet for a stake in the airline as ‘inaccurate’ and said that it was busy with its own expansion plans.

“In response to recent inaccurate stories in the media, Emirates can confirm it has no plans to acquire a stake in any airline in India or elsewhere,” an Emirates spokesperson told daily ‘Khaleej Times’.

The spokesperson added that the carrier was “focused on its own growth” and was investing substantially in its own fleet and network expansion plans.

Jet slashes domestic air tickets price starting at Rs 1,777

Taking on competition from no- frill carriers, Jet Airways today launched a week-long sale of seven lakh low-fare domestic air tickets to attract air travellers who could use them to fly from August 10 onwards.

The one-way economy fares would be Rs 1,777, Rs 2,777 and Rs 3,777 for sectors less than 750 km, between 750-1,000 km and over 1,000 km respectively, an airline spokesperson said, adding fuel surcharge would be part of the ticket cost but the passenger would have to pay the applicable taxes.
