Iraqi man held for rape in Delhi

A 29-year-old Iraqi was arrested for raping a woman here, police said Saturday.

Saif Mohammed was arrested Thursday for raping his neighbour in south Delhi’s Kalkaji area, police said.

The accused was pursuing MSc from Jamia Millia Islamia and had been in Delhi for several years, police said.

The woman approached police Thursday and the accused was arrested after the victim’s medical report confirmed rape, police said, refusing to reveal her age.

Seemandhra Congress leaders urge chief minister to resign

Congress leaders from Rayalaseema and Andhra regions Saturday asked Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and state Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana to resign to mount pressure on the central government to withdraw its decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh.

Over 80 leaders including 19 ministers, 48 members of state assembly and 14 members of council called on the chief minister at his camp office here Saturday. They include ministers and legislators who already have submitted their resignation to protest the decision to carve out separate Telangana state.

2006 Malegaon blasts case: accused seeks discharge

Claiming contradictions in the charge sheet filed by various probe agencies, an accused in the 2006 Malegaon bomb blasts case today urged a special court to discharge him.

Earlier, seven other accused in the same case had also sought discharge on the same ground.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) Counsel Geeta Godambe sought time to file its reply to the discharge plea of the accused, following which the special MCOCA court posted the matter for further hearing to August 29.

Singer Whitney Houston’s mother Cissy struggle to cure her famous daughter of drug addiction by putting her in rehab but she now believes it was not enough.

Houston found dead in a hotel bathtub on February 11, last year. She was 48. Heart attack and cocaine are said to have contributed to her drowning.

Cissy, 70, recalled that her decision to send Whitney to rehab had startled and angered her famous daughter, reported Contactmusic.

2G:Court fixes August 17 for hearing arguments on Swamy’s plea

A special CBI court today listed for August 17 the arguments on a plea by Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy that the written statement given by former Telecom Minister A Raja to the JPC on 2G scam be placed before court.

Special CBI Judge O P Saini, who was scheduled to pass an order on the plea, posted it for August 17 after the counsel appearing on behalf of Swamy said that he would advance some arguments in the matter.

The lawyer told the court that Swamy was not in Delhi while the counsel, who was to argue on the plea, was unwell.

Activist moves NCW over Bhati’s comments against Durga Shakti

Taking strong objection to alleged improper comments made by SP leader Narinder Bhati against suspended IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, social activist Nutan Thakur today filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women against the UP Agro chairman.

Three months’ jail term in MP if acid is sold without license

In the light of Supreme Court’s recent directive and to curb the acid attacks, Madhya Pradesh government has tightened the rules regarding sale of acids, and introduced a jail term and heavy fine as penalty.

Those selling acids without a valid license, or not maintaining a proper record of sale, will face a jail term of three months and fine of Rs 50,000, as per the new rules.

Further, the buyer will have to provide a photo-identity proof to the seller.

‘United’ BJP will decide on PM candidate at appropriate time: Venkaiah Naidu

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday rubbished media reports of an infighting within the saffron fold with regard to the prime ministerial candidate for the next general elections, and said an announcement in this regard will be made at an appropriate time.

He also made it clear that the BJP is not waiting for the Congress Party to declare its prime ministerial candidate first.

Naidu said the BJP Parliamentary Board, which is the party’s topmost decision-making body, will take a final call on this issue.

New drug targets found to help fight Alzheimer`s

Cure for hepatitis C virus comes closer to reality

Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have shown for the first time that the hepatitis C virus (HCV) can replicate in monkeys, by differentiating monkey stem cells into liver cells and inducing successful infection.

The new findings may lead to the first new animal model and provide new avenues for developing treatments and vaccines for this disease, which impacts more than three million people in the United States.

Removing Fallopian tubes could reduce ovarian cancer risk

A doctor in UK has urged women at high risk of ovarian cancer that they have their Fallopian tubes removed as a precautionary step.

However, Cancer Research UK said that there was no evidence how effective it would be.

Woman Maoist held in Kolkata

A woman member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) and suspected to be a leader of the group has been arrested from the West Bengal capital, police said Saturday.

“Joyeeta Das, a member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), was arrested Friday and some incriminating documents seized from her,” the special task force of the city police said in a release.

Das was nabbed from South Kolkata’s Charu Market area following a tip-off.

FDA warns of serious rash risk with acetaminophen pain pills

Tylenol and other painkillers containing the ingredient acetaminophen can cause a potentially deadly skin rash known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, U.S. health regulators said on Thursday.

Companies that sell prescription acetaminophen will be required to add a warning about the skin rash to the drug`s package insert, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The agency will also request or encourage companies who sell acetaminophen products over the counter to add a warning about the risk of serious skin reactions.

Roona Begum, baby with hydrocephalus, discharged from hospital

Doctors on Friday discharged a one-year-old Indian baby who underwent multiple surgery to correct a rare disorder that caused her head to nearly double in size, a neurosurgeon told AFP.

Roona Begum endured several surgical procedures which saw doctors at a hospital near New Delhi drain fluid from her head in a life-saving operation and dramatically reduce the size of her skull.

“Roona`s health has improved significantly…. We have discharged the baby this morning and she is fit to travel,” neurosurgeon Sandeep Vaishya said.

7 kids hurt as two school vehicles collide

At least seven students and a driver were injured in a head-on collision between a mini-bus and a van from two different schools here Saturday morning, police said. The mini-bus driver was arrested for negligence.

The incident took place around 7 a.m. in north Delhi’s Alipur area and all the injured left hospital after first aid, police said.

At least seven children of St. John’s School were travelling in the mini-bus when it collided with the Rana Model School’s van carrying 10 children, police said. Both schools are in Alipur.

Bank manager arrested for taking bribe to sanction loan

A bank manager was arrested today by the Anti Corruption Bureau for demanding bribe of Rs 17,000 to sanction a loan.

In a complaint to the ACB, Bhanwar Singh of Delsar village in Jaisalmer alleged that Central Cooperative Bank manager Sajjan Singh Rathore demanded bribe of Rs 17,000 from his uncle and cousin brother against sanctioning a loan of Rs 3.50 lakh, DIG (ACB) S K Narjari said.

The manager had already taken Rs 12,000 from Bhanwar Singh and called him to his office today for the remaining Rs 5,000, where the ACB sleuths caught him red-handed.

Jet launches week-long sale of low-fare domestic tickets

Taking on competition from no- frill carriers, Jet Airways today launched a week-long sale of seven lakh low-fare domestic air tickets to attract air travellers who could use them to fly from August 10 onwards.

The one-way economy fares would be Rs 1,777, Rs 2,777 and Rs 3,777 for sectors less than 750 km, between 750-1,000 km and over 1,000 km respectively, an airline spokesperson said, adding fuel surcharge would be part of the ticket cost but the passenger would have to pay the applicable taxes.

Kalmadi loses IAAF Council membership

Scam-tainted Suresh Kalmadi’s association with any sports body has ended as he has lost the membership of the powerful Council of the International Association of Athletics Federation.

Kalmadi lost the IAAF Council membership after his defeat in the Asian Athletics Association’s presidential election in Pune early last month to Qatar’s Dahlan Al-Hamad.

The IAAF have now appointed Du Zhaocai, senior vice-president of the AAA and general secretary of Chinese Athletics Association (CAA), to its Council as one of Asia’s representatives.
