Brother killed for protesting sisters’ rape attempt

A man was shot dead today when he protested the attempts of four youths to rape his two sisters at Dainhat in Burdwan district, police said.

Ganesh Murmu (22) was shot from close range early this morning when he stopped the youths from raping his two sisters at their home at Nasipur Adivasi Para in Dainhat.

“The gunmen fled after firing the shots. Murmu, who works as a private security guard, died on the spot. The police have launched a manhunt to arrest the culprits,” Superintendent of Police S M H Mirza said.

BJP won’t benefit by naming Modi as PM: Pawar

As a coalition government is “inevitable”, the BJP won’t get support if it projects Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate, NCP chief Sharad Pawar says.

“If coalition government is inevitable, there has to be a person and leadership which is acceptable to other parties,” Pawar told CNN-IBN when asked about Modi’s prime ministerial potential.

TRS chief says no to Hyderabad as union territory

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao Sunday ruled out accepting Hyderabad as union territory or a permanent joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

He said his party had no objection if Andhra Pradesh government functioned from here for 10 years as announced by the central government. He, however, made it clear that the Telangana government would run the administration of Hyderabad.

Incessant rains and flash floods have left at least 20 people dead in Chandrapur district in Maharashtra. In the rescue efforts, thousands of people in the low-lying areas of region have been evacuated to safer places.

District Collector Dr Deepak Mhaisekar has stated that financial aid would be distributed speedily. As many as 2,215 persons from 585 families in the city were shifted to safer places while in Ballarpur tehsil, 1,080 persons from 537 families were shifted.

Kohli defends decision to keep Rasool on bench

SpiceJet to pay Rs 28K for failing to take care of luggage

Budget carrier SpiceJet has been directed by a consumer forum here to pay a compensation of Rs 28,000 to a couple for failing to take care of their luggage, which was damaged and tampered with while in transit.

The South West District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum noted that the luggage was intact when it was checked-in by the complainants at Srinagar Airport, but on reaching Delhi Airport one of the bags was found to be damaged with its lock removed.

Four of family killed in road accident in Almora

Four members of a family were killed and two seriously injured when the car they were travelling in fell into a river near Masi, 95 km from Almora, police said on Sunday.

Sher Singh (54), Verendra Singh (22), Channa Devi (44) and Triloka Devi (52), all residents of Kaneri village, were coming from Delhi to attend a religious festival in Masi, when their car fell from 20 feet into a local river, they said.

The driver and another family member sustained severe injuries and have been taken to a hospital in Haldwani, police said.

TRS leaders worried about the future of the party

Speculations are rife over the future course of action of TRS in the event of formation of separate Telangana State. On the one hand , Congress wants TRS to be merge in it because Mr. KCR had promised for it. On the other hand, a strong group of TRS party leaders want not to merge TRS into Congress but TRS should play the role of the allied partner of the Congress. Party President, Mr. KCR is consulting his senior party colleagues on both these possibilities. Mr. KCR has made up his mind about the future course of action but he did not expose it.

Quake jolts northeastern Japan, no tsunami risk

A strong earthquake has shaken northeastern Japan in the same region devastated by a giant tsunami and temblor 2-1/2 years ago. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 that struck Sunday.

NHK TV said there were no immediate reports of problems at any of the nuclear power plants in the area, including Fukushima Dai-ichi plant that went into multiple meltdowns after the March 2011 tsunami.

NHK says some roads were blocked off and some trains stopped running temporarily for safety checks.

KCR is not interested in Telangana State-Chiranjivee

Poonam Dhull, daughter of a driver working for the government of Haryana, has done her family and state proud by bagging a US $ 50,000 scholarship to pursue a doctorate in the United States.

Twenty-four-year-old Poonam was awarded the $ 50,000 (over Rs.30 lakh) scholarship for pursuing PhD in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina.

Her father, Suresh Pal, works as a driver with the public relations department of the Haryana government.

Congress leader Rajagopal blames Chandrababu over division of AP

Six injured, over 100 structures damaged in Jammu tremor

Six people were injured and over 100 structures damaged in Saturday’s earthquake in the hilly Kishtwar district of Jammu region, as reports of damage started pouring in Sunday morning from inaccessible areas of the region.

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Doda, Kishtwar districts Saturday morning.

The tremor was classified as “moderate” by the MET office.

Situation in Assam’s Anglong tense, shoot-at-site ordered

After Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday ruled out the division of the state, the situation in Assam ‘s Karbi Anglong district remains tense. The three days of violence resulted in one death and large scale vandalism by the mobs.

As violence continues to rock parts of Assam in support of demands for separate states of Karbi Anglong and Bodoland, the state government has issued shoot-at-site orders.

Police atrocities on an innocent Muslim woman

Police arrested a poor Muslim woman belonging to Old City under the suspicion. She is a Household servant in Talabkatta area . Minorities Commission takes action on detention of Muslim youths in jails

Interests of Seema Andhra leaders are in danger

A.P. Minister of Education, Mr. Shailaja Nath told that Hyderabad is not the Jagir of KCR. He demanded the Congress High Command to withdraw the decision of bifurcation of State and keep A.P.
