YSR Congress party leader Sharmila concluded her 230-day Maro Praja Prasthanam padayatra here on Sunday.

Accompanied with her mother YS Vijayamma and other party leaders, Sharmila unveiled the statue of her father and late Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy to mark the occasion. It was at Ichapuram that YSR had concluded his Praja Prasthanam padayatra before 2004 elections.

Elaborate security in place for Bonalu procession

Elaborate security arrangements are being made for the Bonalu procession to be held in the Old City on Monday.

Talking to reporters after reviewing the arrangement, City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma said that it was almost after 14 years that Bonalu and Ramzan festivals have coincided. However, he appreciated the people for celebrating both the festivals with complete peace and harmony. He said that this cordial atmosphere should continue in the city forever.

India may have 50 states if all demands for new states are met

India may have at least 50 states in future if demands for new states are to be conceded as the home ministry has received representations for creation of more than 20 states.

The demands for separate states have come from across the country — for Kukiland in Manipur to Kongu Nadu in Tamil Nadu, for Kamatapur in North Bengal to Tulu Nadu in Karnataka.

However, except Uttar Pradesh, which during the Mayawati-led BSP government proposed to create four states dividing the country’s most populous state, no state government had given any recommendation for carving out a new state.

Hari Krishna resigns as Rajya Sabha MP

Sushil Kumar Shinde undergoes surgery for lung ailment at Mumbai Hospital

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Sunday morning underwent a surgery for a lung ailment at a hospital here.

He was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital on the night of August 3. According to reports, Shinde”s daughter Praniti, a Congress MLA disclosed that it was a minor operation and was fixed earlier.

She had said that there was no cause for concern. Sushil Kumar Shinde will be shifted to the surgical intensive care unit for three days after the surgery and he is expected to be discharged after 10 days. (ANI)

47% Chinese urbanites have smartphones: Google

About 47 percent of Chinese urban residents have smartphones, according to a report released by Google on Wednesday.

The “Our Mobile Planet: China” report, conducted by Google and market research company IPSOS in the first quarter, surveyed 1,000 urban Internet users between the ages of 18 and 64. Smartphones have become an indispensable part of people”s daily lives, as 69 percent of respondents said they access the Internet every day on their smartphones and 38 percent never leave home without the devices, according to the report.
