Mass Ramzan prayer take pledge against terrorism

Braving inclement weather, hundreds of believers converged here for a mass prayer and took a pledge against terrorism and alcoholism to mark the 26th day of the holy month of Ramadan.

The last night prayer meeting, which lasted till this morning, was organised by Malappuram-based Ma’din Academy, a major educational and charity centre.

The Ramzan spiritual conference has been an annual feature for the last few years, attracting faithful from different parts of the state and outside.

SC: Abu Salem’s extradition still valid, will face trial in India

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed gangster Abu Salem’s plea to quash trials against him in the wake of Portugal top court’s decision to terminate his extradition to India.

Salem had filed the application after the Portugal Supreme Court upheld the order of a lower court there, terminating his extradition after it concluded that India had violated the deportation rules in Salem’s case.

Baby sold by doctor rescued in China

Police have recovered a newborn boy who was allegedly sold to human traffickers by an obstetrician in northwest China’s Shaanxi province.

Six suspects involved in the human trafficking case have been arrested, Xinhua reported.

The baby was recovered in Anyang city of central Henan province Sunday, but DNA tests must be conducted to confirm its identity, officials said. The baby was in good condition.

Over 665,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon: UN

The number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has exceeded 665,000, the UN refugee agency said.

The UN Higher Council for Refugees (UNHCR) said the number of the registered refugees was more than 554,000 while more than 111,000 were still waiting for registration, Xinhua reported.

It said 70 percent of the refugees were women and children.

Lebanon has frequently called on the UN and international donors to help it shoulder the heavy burden of hosting the Syrian refugees, who are expected to cross the threshold of one million by the end of the year.

Hyderabad could be modelled after Delhi: Digvijay Singh

Hyderabad, which would be the joint capital of Telangana and the Andhra region for 10 years, could be modelled after Delhi where law and order is handled by the Centre, Congress leader Digvijay Singh has said.

“We are looking at provisions like we have in Delhi where law and order is being handled by the Home Ministry directly and the Police Commissioner is directly responsible to the Lieutenant Governor…some kind of formulation we are looking at,” the AICC General Secretary told Karan Thapar in CNN-IBN’s show Devil’s Advocate.

TRS rules out accepting Hyderabad as UT or joint capital

TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao today voiced his opposition to to any proposal making Hyderabad a permanent joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh or a Union Territory.

Rao said the administration of Hyderabad should be run by the Telangana government.

“TRS would have no objection if the new Andhra Pradesh government runs its administration from Hyderabad till a capital with necessary infrastructure is built, but the administration of Hyderabad should be run by the Telangana government,” he said.

Shatrughan Sinha’s comments against Narendra Modi harming party’s interest: BJP

Anti-Telangana lawyers lodge complaint against TRS chief

The East and West Godavari Bar Association Lawyers Joint Action Committee (JAC) lodged a complaint today against Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrasekhara Rao (KCR) for his alleged remarks about non-Telangana region employees working in Hyderabad.

The Lawyers’ JAC lodged a complaint in Rajahmundry’s Three Town police station against KCR, its convener Muppalla Subba Rao said.

The JAC also formed a human chain in protest against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Jamiat Ulama appeals to maintain peace till Eid

Assam State Jamiat Ulama (ASJU) today appealed to all groups demanding separate states not to declare any bandh or block roads till the end of Eid festival later this week.

In a statement, ASJU President Badruddin Ajmal said the frequent bandhs and violence in the state in the last couple of days have hit the Muslim people in their daily routine during the holy month of Ramzan.

Gold bar seized from passenger at Hyderabad airport

Customs officials today seized a gold bar weighing 1 kg from a Kerala-based man who landed from Dubai at Rajiv Gandhi international airport at Shamshabad here.

Based on the intelligence input, sleuths of Customs Air Intelligence (RGIA) intercepted P Siraju at the customs exit gate and seized the gold bar concealed in one of his socks.

Siraju arrived from an Emirates Airlines flight and was passing through the Green Channel meant for passengers who have nothing to declare, Customs officials said.

230 bar dancers “rescued” in Bangalore

As many as 230 women, being used by some city hotels for offering “unauthorised dance entertainment” to customers, have been rescued by police.

The women, hailing from different parts of the country including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi besides Karnataka, were rescued during raids conducted on seven hotels in the busy Gandhinagar and Majestic areas of the city yesterday, police said.
