Withdrawal from separate Telangana not possible- Ahmed Patel

Court cites Mahomedan Law to absolve man of `rape’

A Muslim man has been absolved of charges of illegally confining and raping a minor from the same religion, whom he later married, by a Delhi court which cited the Mahomedan Law that allows a 15-year-old girl to marry against the wishes of her parents.

The accused was charged with rape and illegal confinement of the minor under the IPC.

The IPC treats a girl as minor, in relation to the offence of rape, till she attains the age of 16 years and establishing physical relations with her, even with her consent, is an offence entailing life term as maximum sentence.

Cannot choose between Modi and Chouhan: Prabhat Jha

BJP vice president Prabhat Jha today refused to choose the better chief minister between Madhya Pradesh’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Gujarat’s Narendra Modi, saying he cannot choose between two leaders of his own party.

When asked by reporters here as to who was a better chief minister between Chouhan and Modi, Jha said he would not like to compare two people from his own party.

Meanwhile, Jha also described Manmohan Singh as the “most unsuccessful Prime Minister in India’s history”.

A day after sticking a notice on the door of Mandela’s upmarket residence threatening to cut utility services, Johannesburg city council apologised for the “unfortunate incident”.

Britain’s Falklands War naval chief dies aged 81

Sandy Woodward, who commanded the British navy task force that retook the Falkland Islands in the 1982 war with Argentina, has died aged 81, the defence ministry confirmed today.

The admiral died after a long illness, his daughter told the BBC.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he was “a truly courageous and decisive leader who helped ensure Falkland Islanders can still live in peace and freedom”.

Britain has held the Falklands since 1833 but Buenos Aires claims the barren South Atlantic islands are occupied Argentine territory.

Plea against verdict quashing NEET reaches SC

A petition was on Monday filed in the Supreme Court seeking a review of its judgement scrapping the single common entrance test (NEET) for admissions to MBBS, BDS and post-graduate courses in all medical colleges.

The plea filed NGO ‘Sankalp’, through lawyer Prashant Bhushan, has sought a review of the July 18 majority (2-1) verdict of the apex court that had quashed the notifications for National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) on the ground that it violated the rights of state and private institutions to administer such institutions.

BSF personnel injured in Ramgarh Sector during firing from Pakistan

A head constable of the Border Security Force (BSF) was injured Monday evening during firing from the Pakistan side in the Ramgarh Sector of Samba District. The BSF personnel was identified as Ram Niwas Meena. The firing incident took place at around 4 p.m.. Meena was hit on the right side of his chest and on his foot. He has been admitted to the Government Medical Hospital in Jammu for treatment. (ANI)

Salem’s extradition still valid, has to face trial here: SC

Gangster Abu Salem’s extradition to India is still valid despite its termination by Portugal’s Constitutional court, the Supreme Court held today paving the way for continuance of trial against him in various cases including the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

The apex court held that the verdict by the the highest court in Portugal is not binding and dismissed the plea of Salem for quashing of all proceedings against him after termination of his extradition to India.

Man gets 12 yrs RI in attempt to murder case

A local court today sentenced a man to 12 years rigorous imprisonment in an attempt to murder case.

Additional sessions judge Kuldip Singh held Jora Singh guilty in the case and pronounced the verdict on him, prosecution sources said.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs two lakh on the convict. In default of payment of fine, Singh will have to undergo RI for two years.

He was also convicted under Arms Act, 1959 and awarded three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000.

Failed to pay the fine, Singh will have to further undergo RI for nine months.

VIT University trustee moves HC alleging irregularities

A member of the trust governing the private Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University has moved the Madras High Court seeking to appoint an interim administrator to oversee the trust, alleging several irregularities in the functioning of the renowned institution.

Trustee G V Sampath, also son of VIT Founder-Chancellor G Viswanathan, in his petition alleged huge funds of another trust were syphoned and students to the Chennai campus were admitted without necessary approval and collection of huge amounts by way of fees.

Britain should act to improve bilateral relations: Iran

Tehran has urged London to take measures for restoring their bilateral relations, saying that it was Britain that unilaterally severed its ties with the Islamic republic, Xinhua reported Monday.

UAE distributes clothes for Kazakh kids

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) embassy in Kazakhstan, in cooperation with the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), is distributing Eid clothing for the needy children of the country.

The gesture comes as part of the “Clothe One Million Needy Children Campaign”, launched by the UAE Vice President and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The drive includes dispatching of Eid clothing to thousands of needy children in Kazakhstan.

No plans now to return Bengal land: Infosys

IT major Infosys Monday said it did not have any immediate plans to return the 50-acre plot given by the West Bengal government, but indicated that a solution could be found out if alternative proposals like “SEZ-like tax benefits” were provided.
