Over 11 lakh abortions in a year in India: Govt

A total of 11.06 lakh abortions were recorded in the country in 2008-09, according to government data.

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said data on the numbers of unsafe abortions in the country is not available in the Central Health Management and Information System of National Rural Health Mission or national level surveys.

As per Registrar General of India- Sample Registration System (RGI -SRS) (2001-03), 8 per cent of maternal deaths in the country are attributed to ‘abortions’.

Cabinet to consider setting up of ‘Mahila Bank’ on Thursday

The Cabinet is likely to approve on Thursday setting up of the Bhartiya Mahila Bank with an initial capital of Rs 1,000 crore.

The establishment of an all women bank is on the agenda for consideration in the next Cabinet meeting, sources said.

The bank, which will have an initial capital of Rs 1,000 crore, would provide dedicated financial services to women in general and women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in particular.

Government is planning to seek Parliament nod for allocation for setting up of the bank, which was proposed by
Finance Minister P Chidambaram in his Budget speech.

Anti-Pak protests in Jammu

Protesters took to the streets here today against the killing of five Indian soldiers by Pakistani troop in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch sector.

During the several protests in different parts of Jammu, the protesters set ablaze flags of Pakistan and raised slogans against the neighbouring country.

Over 300 activists of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha set on fire the effigy of UPA government and a Pakistan flag.

Meanwhile, BJP activists held similar protests at Poonch and Rajouri.

Security heightened along LoC in J-K

Amid tension triggered by the killing of five Indian soldiers by Pakistani troops, patrolling and security have been heightened along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Expressing outrage over the killing of five Indian soldiers by Pakistan, Congress today demanded “appropriate” measures at the highest level but rejected BJP’s criticism of the government on this, reminding it of Kargil war during NDA rule.

Relief to Muslim trust on police order against offering namaz

Observing that permission is not required to offer namaz inside a private trust building, the Bombay High Court today granted interim stay on an order given by Nashik police to a Muslim trust prohibiting it from allowing people to offer prayers in its building.

By an order dated July 11, the senior police inspector of Bhadrakali police station in Nashik prohibited the Madni Centre from allowing people to offer namaz in their building on the ground that it causes traffic woes in the vicinity.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi today said India would not be cowed down by the “deceitful” killing of five of its soldiers by Pakistan along the LoC and asked the Government to take “appropriate” measures.

Expressing deep grief and shock over the incident in Jammu & Kashmir, she said that the entire Congress party as indeed the entire country stands by the families of the martyred soldiers.

Pak court puts off Musharraf’s indictment till Aug 20

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court today put off Pervez Musharraf’s indictment in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case till August 20 after the former dictator failed to appear before the judge for “security reasons”.

Musharraf, summoned to face charges of criminal conspiracy and failure to provide security to the former premier, was not brought to the court in Rawalpindi because of threats to his life.

Police and Musharraf’s counsel told Judge Chaudhry Habibur Rehman that it was not safe to bring the former military ruler to court due to the threats.

Ishrat case: Pandey bail plea rejected by CBI court

A special CBI court here today rejected the anticipatory bail application of ADGP P P Pandey, paving the way for his arrest in the 2004 fake encounter case of Ishrat Jahan and three others.

Special CBI judge Gita Gopi rejected the anticipatory bail application of Pandey, who had gone underground for a few months after his name surfaced in the encounter case.

The court had declared him proclaimed absconder then.

Minor girl raped by youth

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth in Vidarka area here, police said Tuesday.

The girl had gone out to attend to nature’s call yesterday when Bantu, 22, of the same village raped her and fled, Shikohabad police station in-charge B K Tewari said.

A case has been lodged and hunt is on to nab the youth, he said, adding that the girl has been sent for a medical examination.

10-yr-old boy hacked to death for teasing minor girl

A ten-year-old boy was hacked to death allegedly for teasing a seven-year-old girl by her brother in Bahadurpurva village, police said today.

The boy had gone to the jungles of Kakardari to graze his cattle where he allegedly teased the girl on August one, Superintendent of Police Rakesh Chand Sahu said today.

When the girl brought the incident to the notice of her parents, her mother first rushed to the jungle and beat up the boy after which her brother allegedly abducted him, the SP said.

Father of an eight-year-old girl repeatedly raped minor

A father of two has been sentenced to life term for repeatedly raping a 15-year-old, whom he used to ferry to school, by a Delhi court which said he acted like a “beast” and his horrendous crime that left the girl pregnant was “deliberate and well thought of”.

The court noted that despite being the father of an eight- year-old girl, the convict made the victim a “prey of his sexual lust” and continued to assault her daily for around 25 days as a result of which she became pregnant and had to undergo an abortion.

Defense analysts urge Centre to take tough stand against Pakistan

Don’t hold talks with Pakistan: BJP on soldiers’ killing

The BJP Tuesday said India should not hold talks with Pakistan in the wake of the killings of five Indian soldiers by Pakistani troops in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shahnawaz Hussain said: “Talks with Pakistan should not be held if even one bullet is fired on the border… You can’t have bullets being fired on the border and our soldiers being killed, and then hold talks side by side.”

“The government should say there will be no talks, which will act as pressure on Pakistan,” he told NDTV news channel.

Pakistan denies killing Indian soldiers, wants talks

Pakistan emphatically denied Tuesday Indian allegations that Pakistani soldiers intruded into Jammu and Kashmir and killed five Indian soldiers.

“Pakistan rejects the allegations carried by sections of the Indian media of an attack across the LoC (Line of Control) in the Poonch sector in which five Indian soldiers were claimed to have been killed,” a Pakistani foreign office statement said.

“These are baseless and unfounded allegations. Our military authorities have confirmed there had been no exchange of fire that could have resulted in such an incident,” it said.

Tension among employees in Hyderabad government offices
