Airtel roaming charges for Saudi Arabia reduced

Airtel offered concessions to its prepaid customers spending vocation in Saudi Arabia. As per the reduced rate in Saudi Arabia, instead Rs.50 only Rs.15 per minute will be charged. Hindu, Muslim couples swap kidneys for transplant

Rising above religious and sectarian divide, a Hindu couple and a Muslim couple swapped their kidneys for transplantation, as the blood groups of their spouses did not match, a leading specialty hospital official said here Tuesday.

“We have carried out a historic swap kidney transplant involving two couples from Hindu and Muslim communities, which highlights a humanitarian cause above religious and sectarian divide,” Narayana Health spokesman K.S. Vasuki told IANS.

11 children killed in Karachi blast

At least 11 children were killed and 24 others injured, some of them critically, when a bomb exploded near a market in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi early Wednesday, the Geo News reported citing a political leader.

The explosive material was planted on a motorbike, said police.

The explosion occurred in the city’s Lyari area shortly after a football match ended, said Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Sania Naz, who was elected from Lyari constituency.

Minority ministry’s plan to establish Islamic banking in India

With appointment of government’s Chief Economic Adviser Raghuram Rajan as the next RBI governor, Union Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan today hoped that his ministry’s plan to establish Islamic banking in India will get a boost.

Khan said Rajan was positive when he met him recently to push the proposal.

“The financial reforms commission headed by Rajan had even advocated Islamic banking. I am sure his appointment as RBI governor would be a big push for the proposal,” the Minority Affairs minister told PTI.

Syria’s Assad ‘legalises’ private security firms

Syria’s president has passed a decree legalising private security firms, faced with a 29-month armed revolt against his rule that has pinned down the police, state news agency SANA reported today.

President Bashar al-Assad’s decree regulates “licencing for private companies that provide protection and guard duties … To ensure the safety of individuals, establishments, property and the transport of cash, jewels and precious metals,” said SANA.

Youth beaten up for keeping long locks

A 25-year-old youth was allegedly assaulted by some locals after he refused their “suggestions” of cutting his long hairs in Muradnagar area here, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday when the accused had arrived at Khalid’s residence and asked him to cut his long locks, they said.

After he refused to accept their suggestion, they beat up Khalid with wooden rods and later forcibly cut his hairs.

Among the accused, two have been identified as Sattu and Fahim.

Wife asks police to return Pravin Mahajan’s belongings

Three years after Pravin Mahajan, brother of the late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan died, his wife Sarangi approached the sessions court here today, seeking return of his belongings which the Mumbai Police had seized during his arrest.

In Sarangi’s application, she has asked the Mumbai police to return letters written by Pramod Mahajan to his brother Pravin, besides his computers and documents.

Congress pans Modi over land rights of Sikh farmers in Gujarat

Wading into the simmering controversy over Gujarat government’s action to freeze land of Sikh farmers in the state, opposition Congress today said the BJP strongman was “lying” on the issue of displacement of farmers by holding erstwhile Congress government responsible.

The state government had started issuing notices to freeze land owned by non-Gujarati farmers in 2003 and started taking their possession since 2010.

India today said it will weigh all options in the wake of an audacious attack by Pakistani troops that killed five soldiers without creating a situation detrimental to the country’s peace and security.

HC asks officer to release man’s passport

Accepting the plea of a man, facing trial in a matrimonial case lodged by his wife, the Delhi High Court has directed the passport authority to release his passport which was revoked on the ground of criminal charges against him.

The court, however, directed him not to leave the country without its permission and also asked him to attend the ongoing criminal proceedings.

US blacklists Pakistan-based insurgent leader

The US is blacklisting the new leader of a Pakistan-based group that has carried out terrorist attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The State Department announced today that it had added Bahawal Khan’s name to its list of specially designated global terrorists. That step freezes any assets he may have in US jurisdictions and bars Americans from any transactions with him.

Pentagon proposes USD 2.7 bn in Iraq arms sales

The Pentagon has notified the US Congress of USD 2.7 billion in possible new sales to Iraq of air defense and communications systems.

The latest contracts would raise to nearly USD 5 billion the value of a series of US arms sales to Iraq that have been sent to Congress over the past two weeks.

Congress has 30 days to act to block the sales, but otherwise they would have its tacit approval.

The biggest of the contracts notified yesterday was worth an estimated USD 2.4 billion.

Maharashtra CM condoles death of Indian soldier from Kolhapur

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan condoled the death of Indian army soldier Pundalik Mane from Kolhapur, who lost his life during an ambush at Poonch sector today, and said the country would not forget his sacrifice.

Mane hailed from Pimpalgaon village in Kagal taluka of Kolhapur district.

“Be it protecting the country or rushing to help during emergencies, Maharashtra is always at the forefront,” Chavan said.

Cong, BJP have failed to fulfil expectations: Kirodilal Meena

The failure of the ruling Congress dispensation in Rajasthan to open inquiries into alleged cases of corruption by the former BJP government in the state showed that the two parties were in fact hand in glove, independent MP Dr Kirodilal Meena charged today.

Both the parties were “corrupt” and had apparently entered into an agreement that whosoever was in power would keep the interests of the opposition in mind, the Dausa MP said.

US hopes all sections to participate in 2014 Afghan polls

The United States today said it hopes that all sections in Afghanistan would take part in next year’s presidential elections, also hinting at the Taliban’s participation.

While the US official did not specifically mention Taliban, such a statement could be interpreted as it favouring the Taliban’s participation in the 2014 Afghan presidential elections.

“The United States supports transparent, credible and inclusive Afghan elections and has a strong interest in providing technical support to help achieve this outcome,” State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

Snowden awaits father’s visit in Russia: lawyer

The US fugitive Edward Snowden has acquired registration at an address in Russia and his father, lawyer and friends are in the process of obtaining Russian visas, his lawyer said today.

“Yesterday I sent an invitation to Snowden’s father, to his US lawyer and to the friends that Edward asked for,” Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told Kommersant FM radio station.

“The invitation has gone off, we are waiting for the visas to be processed.”

US to go ahead with talks with Russia despite Snowden snub

The United States is going ahead with its talks with Russia later this week despite the strong exception Washington has taken to Moscow’s decision to grant temporary asylum to whistleblower Edward Snowden.

On Friday, US Secretary of State John Kerry, and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, would hold talks with their Russian counterparts at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department.

Pak: Minor blasts rock Karachi

Four bomb blasts rocked Pakistan’s biggest city tonight but no loss of life was reported due to the low intensity of the explosions.

The remote-controlled blasts took place in desolate areas and outside closed shops in the Defence Rahat, Seaview and Kamal areas and near Moti Mahal in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area outside wine shops all closed due to Ramzan.

Karachi police chief Ghulam Qadir said that the purpose of the blasts appeared to be either to cause panic and fear in the city because of the heavy rush of shoppers in the markets ahead of Eid festival or the work of extortionists.

Amid a raging controversy over the introduction of lessons from the Bhagawad Gita in school textbooks, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Tuesday that his government has withdrawn the notification issued in this regard.

“A controversy has been generated about introduction of Bhagawad Gita lessons in school textbooks by the education department which is not correct. The notification that has created this controversy has been withdrawn by the government today,” Chouhan said.

10 killed in car bomb north of Baghdad: officials

A car bomb ripped through a commercial shopping street in a restive area north of Baghdad, killing at least 10 people and wounding 15 others, officials said.

The vehicle rigged with explosives was detonated at around 10.30 PM (1930 GMT) late yesterday in a village just north of the Diyala provincial capital Baquba, a police lieutenant colonel and a doctor said.

All of those killed were men, Dr Ahmed al-Azzawi said, adding that four of the wounded were women.
