Egypt army says 60 ‘terrorists’ killed in Sinai in a month

Egypt’s military today said it had killed 60 “terrorists” in Sinai in the month after Mohamed Morsi’s ouster on July 3, which fuelled militant attacks in the restive peninsula.

The military “killed 60 individuals”, according to a bullet-point video it released, titled “Losses of terrorist elements in exchanges of fire with security forces”.

Online registration of FIRs against power theft in Haryana

Online registration of First Information Reports (FIR) against persons involved in power theft is gaining momentum in Haryana, an official of the power utilities said today.

“As many as 4,321 FIRs have been registered by irrigation and power police stations since January,” chairman and managing director, UHBVN and DHBVN, Devender Singh said today.

2,255 FIRs have been registered in the month of July alone, which is more than 50 per cent of FIRs registered in the past seven months, he said.

Spurned lover shoots at girl, attempts suicide

A 25-year-old girl sustained serious injuries today after she was allegedly shot at by a jilted lover following her refusal to accept his marriage proposal in Siyani Gater area here, police said.

The accused, identified as Deepak, also tried to commit suicide by shooting himself, they said.

According to a complaint lodged by the girl’s parents, the youth was stalking their daughter for several months and also proposed her to tie knot with him.

However, when the girl rejected his proposal, he threatened her with dire consequences.

Man held after threatening TV actress with dire consequences

A 51-year-old man, who had allegedly threatened television actress Dolly Bindra with a gun-shaped lighter was arrested today in another case of criminal intimidation, the police said.

According to the police, this afternoon, the accused Vijay Dewaan tried to barge into the office of one Ritesh Roy with whom he had personal enmity, in the suburban Oshiwara area.

An angry Dewaan was intercepted by an office watchman when he threatened the latter with dire consequences and left.

Students in Mathura dist receive free laptops

More than 4,000 students were today handed laptops here as part of the Samajwadi Party government scheme to distribute the gadgets amongst students in Uttar Pradesh.

“Since the company contracted to supply the laptops could not supply a bulk order, only 4,013 laptops were distributed today.

“The remaining students would get laptops in a second phase of distribution, when Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav himself is likely to hand them out,” said Durga Prasad Yadav, state minister for transport.

HC issues order aimed at reducing pendency of cases in UP

Allahabad High Court has asked district judges and police chiefs across Uttar Pradesh to work together to ensure that the backlog of over six lakh criminal cases where the accused “were absconding (or) not appearing before courts” for more than three months were “wiped out”.

A bench of Justices Amar Saran and Dinesh Gupta also asked the state DGP, Principal Secretary (Home) and district judges to “send feedback to the HC registry by the 7th of each month” regarding the extent to which the above directions were being followed.

Libya suspect in US consulate attack denies charge

A former Libyan militia commander today denied charges filed in US federal court accusing him of being involved in an attack that killed a US ambassador and three other Americans.

Ahmed Abu Khattala told The Associated Press that he was not in hiding, nor had he been questioned by Libyan authorities over the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the US consulate in Benghazi. That assault killed US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and sparked Republican-led investigations in Congress over the attack and its aftermath.

CIA official: Syria war biggest threat to US security

The war in Syria poses the greatest threat to US security because of the risk of the government falling and the country becoming a weapons-rich haven for Al-Qaeda, a CIA official says.

CIA second-in-command Michael Morell gave the assessment in an interview published yesterday by the Wall Street Journal as he prepares to retire after 33 years with the agency.

Morell said there are now more foreign fighters flowing into Syria each month to take up arms with Al Qaeda-affiliated groups than there were going to Iraq to fight with Al-Qaeda at the height of the war there.

FIR against HPCA smells of political vendetta: Thakur

Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) president Anurag Thakur today said that the opening of FIRs against the sports body was politically motivated while maintaining at the same time that they were cooperating on the probe against them.

Egypt says diplomacy has failed to resolve crisis

Egypt’s military-backed interim leadership proclaimed today that a crackdown against two protest sites is inevitable, saying that nearly two weeks of foreign diplomatic efforts to peacefully resolve its standoff with the Muslim Brotherhood have failed.

The statements strongly suggested that Egypt’s sharp polarization may spiral into even more bloodshed as thousands of supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, a Brotherhood member, camp out at two main Cairo intersections and hold daily protests outside security buildings.

Train derailment hits rail traffic on Bilaspur-Katni route

Twenty-seven bogies of a goods train derailed here today leading to disruption of rail traffic on the Bilaspur-Katni single line route.

No one was reported hurt in the mishap.

The cargo train coming towards Bilaspur from Pendra derailed near Tarbahra railway station, which is around 100 kms from Bilaspur station, Bilaspur Railway Division’s Chief Public Relation Officer R K Agrawal told PTI.

“However, no injuries were reported due to the incident,” he said.

The train departed Pendra railway station at around 5.20 pm.

Woman accuses man and three others of allegedly raping her

A 24-year-old woman accused a man, with whom she was negotiating for a matrimonial alliance, of raping her along with three others, police said today.

The alleged incident took place at a lodge in the Shamshabad area here yesterday and the woman lodged a complaint with the RGIA Shamshabad police today.

The police has filed a case against the accused and sent the victim for medical tests.

However, the police refused to divulge further details including names of the accused, saying that further investigations are on.

Iraq attacks kill 17: officials

Attacks including a shooting and bombings at a policeman’s home have killed 17 people in Iraq, officials said, as authorities struggle to contain the country’s worst violence since 2008.

The yesterday’s attacks are the latest in a wave of unrest that has made the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan the bloodiest in years, with more than 800 people killed nationwide.

Militants have struck targets ranging from cafes where Iraqis gather after breaking their daily Ramadan fast to mosques where extended evening prayers are held during the month.

Attack on girl: Friend’s boyfriend shot daughter, says mother

The mother of the 17-year-old girl who was shot at by two youths in the city’s Dakshinpuri area has said that the attack was carried out by the boyfriend of another girl with whom her daughter had had an altercation.

The girl, who was last night shot at inside her house in the south-east Delhi locality, is battling for her life at Max Hospital in Saket.

According to her family members, the victim is on ventilator support in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

“My daughter has just one per cent chance of survival,” said Shafiq Khan, the girl’s father.

Man objects to eve-teasing, shot dead; accused lynched by mob

In a gruesome incident, a 22-year- old man today shot dead a girl’s father after he objected to eve-teasing his daughter, and later in retaliation, the youth was lynched by locals at a village here, police said.

The incident took place in Jawali village at Loni.

According to police, the youth Sushil used to tease the girl, a student of class 11, every day.
