Asaram Bapu’s police deadline ends Friday

A police team has been formed to track down Asaram Bapu and take him into custody if the spiritual guru fails to appear in Rajasthan for questioning Friday in connection with a sexual assault case filed against him by a 16-year-old girl, an official said.

Asaram Bapu was Tuesday served notice at his ashram in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, asking him to appear before police in Jodhpur for questioning before or on Aug 30.

Yasin Bhatkal restless, spends sleepless night

Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal was restless and spent a sleepless night at a high security zone here, officials said.

Yasin Bhatkal, wanted by police in twelve states for alleged involvement in a string of bombings and other terror activities in the last five years, was arrested from the India-Nepal border Thursday. He was arrested along with Asadullah Akhtar, his terror accomplice.

After they spent a sleepless night, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths early Friday interrogated Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah Akhtar.

PCB asks BCCI for explanation on money default issue

Pakistani cricket authorities have sought an explanation and details from the Indian Cricket Board after media reported that the PCB owed the BCCI around seven to eight million rupees.

Media reports said after a BCCI meeting recently that a number of Test-playing nations were to clear outstanding dues with the BCCI and the PCB was listed as one of the defaulters.

The reports said the PCB owed the cash rich BCCI around seven to eight million since early 2000-2001.

Umar Akmal to go through extensive medical examination

The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to push national team player Umar Akmal through an extensive medical examination procedure after foreign doctors informed them that the batsman had 35 to 50 per cent probability of suffering seizures again in his lifetime.

Umar was called back by the PCB from the West Indies after he fell unconscious after a seizure on a flight from Trinidad to Antigua during the Caribbean Premier League.

He was taken to a hospital in Antigua where doctors, after examining him in detail, sent a report to the PCB.

Security forces kill five militants in Kashmir gunfight

Five separatist guerrillas, who are foreigners, were killed in a midnight gunfight with security forces in Kashmir, a police official said on Friday.

A senior police official told a news agency that on specific information, troops of counter insurgency 24 Rashtriya Rifles and the state police surrounded an area on the fringes of Najwan forest near Preng health resort in north Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, 35 km from here.

“When the troops tightened the cordon, hiding militants fired at them triggering an encounter at the end of which five militants were killed,” the official said.

Minor girl gang-raped in Jharkhand, seven arrested

A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by seven persons who were arrested within 12 hours of the crime near Bundu area, about 40km from here, police said on Thursday.

The girl, her “boyfriend” Rajesh, and his friend had set out for Jamshedpur to board a train for Pune on the intervening night of August 27 and 28 when the alleged incident occurred, said SP Saket Kumar Singh.

The girl, a student of class IX, who belongs to Bundu, and the two boys chose to drop in at the residence of her “boyfriend’s” uncle near Bundu for a night halt.

‘Anna Hazare ready to endorse Narendra Modi if he leaves BJP’

India’s anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has said that he would be “happy to endorse” Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi if he left the BJP, an American media outlet has reported.

One million new pilots,technicians needed in 10 years: Boeing

Boeing has projected a demand of one million new pilots and technicians to support the expanding demand for new airplane deliveries over the next two decades.

According to the “2013 Pilot and Technician Outlook” released by Boeing, by 2032 the world will require 498,000 new commercial airline pilots and 556,000 new commercial airline maintenance technicians.

Of this maximum numbers of 192,300 pilots and 215,300 technicians are likely to be required in the Asia Pacific region.

The country specific figures would be released by Boeing on September 16 in Singapore.

PIL seeks joint probe by CBI, IT, ED into IPL match fixing

Hearing a PIL seeking a joint probe by the Income Tax (IT), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI into alleged match fixing and betting in Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches, the Bombay High Court ordered today that a copy of the petition be served to these agencies within three weeks.

Dalit girl rape & murder: Protest continues, committee formed

The protest over the alleged rape and murder of a 20-year-old Dalit girl continued on the fifth day here today, with the protesters staging a dharna in the premises of local general hospital.

The protesters have been sitting on a dharna since Sunday. Their main demands include arrest of those who had allegedly raped and killed the girl, action against police officials who resorted to lathicharge on protesters, withdrawal of police cases lodged against villagers during the course of protest and monetary compensation to the victim’s family.
